One great female character is Kat from "Gravity Rush." Despite being an amnesiac, she nevertheless comes across as bubbly, sassy, kind, and selfless. Her kindness is her greatest strength, but also her greatest weakness, since some people take advantage of that. Her likability is part of why I adore these games and she's fun to play as.

The best female character for me is also the best overall character in video games. Estelle Bright from Trails in the Sky. Her growth over the two games from loveable dumbass to badass hero is amazing.

I feel it should be said that she isn’t just a hero for her ability and willingness to swing a very large stick in the face of evil. She becomes someone who raises others up out of their own darkness, helps them see that they’re better than they think they are and are just as deserving of love as anybody else.

Yes!! So bummed she wasn't on the list! The best thing about her was just how "normal" she is. She's not a bounty hunter, a cop, a super genius, she doesn't have any special powers... she's just a sassy 17-year-old girl, and yet she's still able to traverse a realm of darkness and face off against two cult members, and come out the other side! (And yeah, there's the thing with her connection to Alessa, but it's not like she uses any dormant powers to help her in her journey. Hell, she embraces that darkness because she knows it's a part of her, but she doesn't let it consume her because it's not what solely defines her, like how Claudia and Vincent were treating it as.)

Yeah same here Heather Mason from Silent Hill 3 is awesome and the fact the series never had another Female Protagonist is still surprising, although if Shattered Memories stuck with it's Original Vision, then yeah we would've got that, No I don't consider Book Of Memories Counting as that since you have the option of a Male or Female option, plus Heather Mason is a dam good character in comparison, like Night and Day...

I mean she's one of the few video game characters to feature in a live action movie, plus it was her own, AND it wasn't even bad!! An that's not even getting into how GREAT she is to play and how badass she is in the new games

@@TentacularTaku His reason for picking Claire is explained. She went from someone with only a little bit of fire arm handing from Chris to a well tested veteran of battle in the RE series. All other female characters in the series were already high ranking trained officers of some variety when they were introduced (or reintroduced in the case of Sherry Birkin)

I’m genuinely stunned at the fact that he didn’t include the Boss from metal gear solid 3. She has got to be the most well written female character ever created, and one of the most well written characters ever. Even if she didn’t make it to his top 3-the fact that she is excluded surprised me.

Shout out to Estelle Bright from the Legend of Heroes series. And Lianne Sandlot. They are such great characters.

Here are a couple of my favorite female characters in video games: -Fiora (Xenoblade Chronicles): Without spoiling too much, lets just say she is absolutely the driving force of the story (through its many twists and turns), and XC may just have the best story in all of video games. -Jade(Dragon Quest 11): Really enjoyed her personality, her older sister like relationship with the hero character, the way that she really only opens up to the hero character, and once she joined my party, she never left my lineup (the damage she can do, the skills she can learn, and her high crit rate all make her very good).

Midna from Twilight Princess changed the way i look at life and other people and it felt like i genuinely fell in love with her when i played that game. She has such a unique voice, personality and design.

I love that he gave Celes from Final Fantasy 6 an honourable mention at the end through the song.

The fact that Laura Croft wasn’t on this list or even an honorable mention surprised the hell out of me.

I'd personally pick Makoto Niijima. She's confident in her abilities. She's courageous enough to walk right up to gangsters and demand to see their leader. And her character arc is about her learning to see the world beyond herself. Even more so, she committs herself to following in her father's footsteps and becoming a police officer to protect others.

Ellie is one of my favorite video game characters of all time, regardless of gender... I fell in love with her feisty, take-no-shit attitude and her determination as she proved to be a complete badass despite her unsuspecting age and appearance. I find young Ellie endearing in many ways. Despite her hardships, her future seems to hold much promise by the end of the first game. And indeed, by the beginning of Part II five years later, she has clearly progressed as a skilled post-apocalyptic survivalist and fighter. There is so much tragedy to her story, and it has sunk its claws deep into me. Maybe I'm weird for still liking Ellie as a character, despite what becomes of her by the end of the sequel. I'm a little disappointed to see no mention of her anywhere in the comments so far, but perhaps not too surprised. I found playing Part II difficult at times, and by the end of the game I was truly emotionally drained. It was not a "feel good" experience, but I think it might just be the best game I've ever played.

How in the Hell does Bayonetta get left out of this???

She wants a life of luxury and influence yet never comes off as a greedy snake, going through a character arc that friends are just as important as status. @@jmarx3943 Yeah, I think she takes the cake, too. That's how you do the dark past trope right, and she has such a refreshing attitude about everything. Plus I have a soft spot for martial artist characters anyway and the status effects are legit useful. Although, pretty much every character is amazing in Lunar 2, such a great cast.

My favorite has got to be Milla Maxwell from Tales of Xillia. My favorite scene was when Jude and Ivar fought over whose fault it is her legs got busted, Milla casually crawls away, flatly stating "I don't need this. You guys can duke it out" Even when her legs were broken, she would still rather drag herself away from bullshit than stick around and put up with anything. I admire that so much

I loved Aerith , tifa and Jessie so much in ff7 remake . So it's hard for me to choose lol

I would say Nariko from Heavenly Sword and Faith from Mirrors Edge are badass's in their own right.

Yuna, for sure.. she knew her whole life she was going to sacrifice herself off so people of Spira could have a decade of peace. She was so uplifting for her guardians. Even Tidus, who basically kept saying half the pilgrimage "hey let's get you to Zanarkand so we can defeat Sin. (Which would kill her) She kept a positive attitude towards it all. She was so incredibly selfless that she was about to merry someone she couldn't stand to make Spira happy. But like you said, so many women and so few to select for this list. Great vid man, thanks!

Honestly, I would consider her to be an honourable mention at the very best because while a large portion of her bashers ought to take a look at the many times she’s shown to be athletically capable (Mario Sports, Super Paper Mario, Mario Sports, Super Mario Adventures, Super Princess Peach, Super Paper Mario) it could get pretty annoying having to deal with her waiting to be rescued.

@@kieranstark7213 There’s a lot wrong with her. 1. Super Princess Peach: This game shows how capable she truly is, even fighting a more powerful Bowser. Even Bowser’s Inside Story shows this magic she can do where she levitates Bowser and throws him out the castle. Now if she can do all these things, why the F*CK does she never do them!? Even in Super Paper Mario, a prisoner near Merlee’s Mansion falls in love with Peach, and she proposes the idea of this man rescuing her if she ever gets captured. I mean, seriously? Is that all this man is to you? Let’s not even mention how many lives are lost in the process in the form of Bowser’s minions every time Mario has to rescue her. And maybe people will say “Well she needs to get captured in order for there to even be a game.”, well then make it so Mario needs to fight Bowser for another reason. Super Mario 3D World did that even though someone else needed saving. 2. Terrible Ruler: The goombas used to be members of the Mushroom Kingdom, but left to join Bowser after the Toads kept making fun of their lack of intelligence and short stature. Now, does Peach try to make things better for goomba kind, given that she is their ruler? Perhaps a peace treaty, or rules against discrimination? NO. She either stomps them to death, bashes them with shells, or has them EATEN ALIVE by Yoshis and potted piranha plants. Damn. There’s also the post game in Odyssey, where she goes on vacation WITHOUT TELLING ANYBODY, and leaving NOBODY in charge in her stead. That’s just awful. 3. The ending to Super Mario Odyssey. I’m sorry, but the man who has saved you for over 30 years proposes to you ON THE GOD DAMN MOON, and you turn him down!? And after so many games beautifully hinted at a relationship that felt so grandiose, like the ending of the first Paper Mario game, only to confirm a friend zone relationship. And what was the point? To make her look more strong and independent? I’m sorry, but that was probably the worst possible time to do something like that, and it’s not like she’s that strong anyways given the other points mentioned. Apparently Princess Peach gets kidnapped for the thrill of it, which makes sense in some degree, also the fact she's as powerful as she is that she could end the world with a mere thought, is the scary thing.

Katherine and Ann at number 2 and 3? Kudos to you. I love them. Also worth mentioning IMO- Atoli from .Hack//GU, Makoto from Yakuza 0, Hinako from Blue Reflection, and Kara from Detroit Become Human. All of them have great character arcs.

Mischief Makers was such a good game. I even remember some parts, and all that you've shown, after approximately 20 years. Well, now I feel old.

Glad Ann is getting some recognition. Personally my favorite is Makoto's older sister Sae. Despite having a palace you see she's a good but troubled person.

i'm so happy you included the Q/K/Catherines. that is my all time favorite game and the character writing is so good

@@matthewremick3782 i recently beat Full Body and i've seriously had dreams of me pushing blocks, but like in the perspective of the game. i don't usually play puzzle games at all but this game had me hooked

5 that spring to mind for me are Susan Ashworth (The Cat Lady), Heather Mason (Silent Hill 3), Senua (Hellblade: Senuas sacrifice), Alyx Vance (Half Life 2) and Laura Wood/Lorelai (Lorelai). All such fantastic and memorable characters and now I have to play The Cat Lady and Lorelai again.

Celes from FFVI is my number one. FFVI was one of the first games to invest me in its characters as strongly as books and movies could invest me in theirs, and Celes’ arc was the primary reason.

If The Boss isn't on this list, I'm gonna riot

Omg the way you spoke about number one was with such love. This was a great list, very different from what I'd expect. I'd have to give some love to Aqua from Kingdom hearts and Aya Brea from Parasite Eve! And of course KAINEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE NIER BABY!

@@redneckreviews3016 no as in Abby is morally wrong, not the other way around. The doctors were going to kill Ellie without her permission for a cure. It's one thing if they asked her ut they didn't. Ellie was justified, Abby wasn't as her father was in the wrong.

I should have seen your Number 1 coming but I didn't. But man, I can get behind that pick. She's so important and shows a really unique kind of strength. It's hard to find much hate for her because she's just written so endearingly well, and it's amazing because it was done much more simply in her early incarnations than in her more modern reinterpretations. I totally fell in love with her (and the rest of the cast) last year. Hugely impactful in a surprising way. I was pleasantly surprised by that pick enough...but then you ended with Celes' theme and that for some reason got me most of all.

Good list!

The boss would be my number 1. Yeah I know you can't play as her but she trained snake so how different could it be? (And there is no character more bad ass than her... A true soldier)

I think I would add Elizabeth from Bioshock infinite somewhere in there. She is smart, strong, badass, and transforms the world around her (metaphorically and literally) she is awesome

Not to mention being the least annoying and most helpful AI companion character ever in a game. Plus, by making her someone the player genuinely appreciates having around, the emotional impact of the story is greater because she's come to really feel like a friend via your shared struggles. And that is so so rare among games with companions. The only other time I can remember that attached to a companion character wasn't even in a release game, it was an amazing companion mod for Oblivion. (VIlja, the one that Terry Pratchett helped write.)

Ending the video with Celes' Theme from FF6, I see what you did there =P I was more of a Tifa guy for years but Ch.8 & Ch.9 in FF7R made a STRONG case for Aerith being best girl during that time. It helps that her sassy personality was wonderfully translated from the original FF7, as opposed to the overly saintly figure she'd been portrayed as in other FF7 spinoffs/Compilation.

Is the link to the zine broken for anyone else?

I would say just about every playable female character from Dynasty Warriors and the various spinoffs deserve a mention. Sun Shang Xiang especially since she's been playable since 2 and has been spinning those battle hoops ever since.

Aerith is my favourite female character in media. The way she makes the best out of every situation is honestly inspiring. I love how she sees the best in every person and humanity in general, despite her traumatic experiences. I admire her for keeping the hope alive and not letting anyone tell her what to do. The pain of never being seen as a normal human is so reletable as an autistic person. I identify myself with her cause she has a strong will and despite having internal struggles never chooses to give up. It is amazing how she supports and encourages people. Her love for humanity transcends time and space. Her appreciation for life is an inspiration. I look up to Aerith for her empathy towards other humans. I think it is amazing how she sees other people for who they truly are underneath.
