I honestly have nothing against damsel in distress characters, even Peach. I'm so sick and tired of the hate damsel characters get. I personally believe that just because a character wears a dress, or likes pink, or isn't the main playable protagonist, that they're a bad character. There is more to them than meets the eye.

Like Super Mario World and the first Paper Mario. Main problem with damsel characters is that their role in the stories is for the most part very repetitive. The entire "a woman gets kidnapped and a hero must go and save her" arc has been done to death by now and while it doesn't bother me and I see at least some point in it, not everyone enjoys that I'd imagine. I guess people just look for some more variety in their stories and characters.

The story isn't always focused on her, but you realise she goes through a lot and has to use her best friend/possible love interest like a tool if she wanted to save the world. And it all happened against her will. Yuna from FFX was also a great character. Before X-2...

Congrats on the 100 000 Subs Josh! This is definitely your highest quality video you've made to date. And I've been with you since the early days. Keep up the great work!

Fun list! One minor correction though; the problem that I and allot of others have with women being captured in video game storylines is not so much the fact they are captured and in need of rescue, but rather they are turned into a helpless damsil that essentially becomes an object for the player to quest for. A good example of the Damsil in Distress trope being subverted is Jade from Beyond Good and Evil. She gets captured and her male companion helps rescue her, but she still fights her own way out of a situation and is the central focus of the game. Essentially, a sexist portrayal of a female character I find can be judged by one of three catagories; 1: If they can be replaced by a sexy lamp and nothing changes about the storyline. 2: They are rendered completely helpless for the sole purpose of being saved by a man, regardless of how proactive they were before. 3: A large part of their character design is made to emphasise sexuality or secondary sex characteristics *CoughDOACough*, for no other reason than they are female. This includes chainmail bikinis and armour plated thongs/boob plates etc. There are exceptions to every rule and it is possible for characters to fall into grey areas. I just find these three particular factors pop up too often.

On the one hand, she was clearly designed in mind to use sexuality as a superpower, fitting into this trend of active female characters defined by their sexuality. But on the other, it's written to be done so on her agency, and the game is balls to the wall ridiculous anyway. Have you seen Jim Sterling's video on the subject? I think he sums it up really well.

There's a boss in the game that's a demon train, and one of the party members you get can suplex as an attack, so essentially you can suplex a train, and its hilarious.

Glad that you at least acknowledged Kreia in the opening, but I'm still disappointed that you didn't see fit to include her. She's just such a complex, multi-layered character, and she's very identifiably female without being stereotypically so. God, I’m watching this video five years after you made it but *thank you* for the Leliana love - it’s hard for me to choose my favorite Dragon Age lady between her, Morrigan, and Sera (yeah, I know she’s divisive, but I have a lot of fun with crass, off-the-wall characters like her who are clearly blithely enjoying themselves while the narrative/general writing and context still pokes fun at then instead of just agreeing that they’re as hilarious as they think they are), but her complexity is *fantastic*, and not gonna lie, thinking about that one scene in Origins where she’s talking about her moral struggles and you can have the Warden reassure her by saying “evil doesn’t worry about being good” helped me out a lot during one rough patch in my life.

Excellent video, Josh, but one minor nitpick: During the credits, you listed a clip used from Mass Effect 2, while that clip actually was from Mass Effect 3. Oh, and congratulations on 100K subscribers.

Is it even possible to double like a video? :D Heck even considering my own favorite female characters I know Leliana would be up near the top somewhere, and you got her at number one. Have you ever considered doing a Let's Play of Final Fantasy 6? It keeps coming up in your videos and you seem to have nice things to say about it (for good reason, the game is awesome). BTW: Nice list. Personally, my favorite VG ladies are Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite, Faith from Mirror's Edge, and Kumatora from Mother 3.

Joshscorcher, I love this list not because my favorite characters are in there, the way you explained and the humor is what makes top 10s so watchable unlike watch mojo. But there is one part that bothered me is the "sliver sucks" comment. In 06 he did, in other games he didn't. He has appeared in portable systems, sonic rivals 1&2: he has the same goal but you see more on what he really is as person and his enemy is someone that been fought before in the sol dimension, in colors (ds version) sliver and someone give you missions and hints to something sega is going to with him.
