To me, a disaster film has to involve an actual disaster, purely of manmade or natural origin. Therefore, films such as Independence Day and Mars Attacks don't count since they're films about alien invasions.

anything that involves an alien invasion isn't a disaster flick, it's a war movie.
I happened across Miracle Mile while I was in college and I couldn’t believe just how chilling it was. I’ve only ever watched it one more time after this but it’s left a long lasting impression because of how real it all felt. Indeed seriously underrated.
2012, Volcano, San Andreas, War of the Worlds, Outbreak, The Happening, Independence Day (It counts) and Day After Tomorrow are some of my favorites. I really liked A Perfect Storm. Great cast.
Deep Impact is not underrated, everyone knows its a great movie, even better than Armageddon
Disaster movies are one of the only genres that can be terrible and still awesome at the same time. I love the cheap indies with awful effects, it's my favorite cinema junk food.

The Arrival is an alien invasion, not a natural disaster. Alien invasions might be disastrous, but they aren't disasters.
Ditch 'The Core' and 'Meteor' and replace them with 'Outbreak' and either 'The Wave' or 'Into the Storm', and this would be a perfect list. Love the inclusion of 'Mars Attacks'!
@user-sn9ig9vl5p

Oh yes...The Wave--but watch it with the sound way down and with subtitles
For those who don't mind subtitles, Norway's "The Wave" from 2015 is worth checking out. Kristian, an arrogant but gifted geologist, is tasked with monitoring the steep and geologically unstable coastal canyons of the fjords--where a tsunami set off by a landslide can rampage for miles before reaching the open sea. With such conditions, you'd think nobody would build along the cliffs where the only routes of escape are narrow switchback roads. So of course, where does Kristian's estranged wife work? In a cliff-side hotel... I didn't go in expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised. The plot gets off to a slow start, a common issue in the genre, but once it picks up moment the tension barely lets off until the very end. While it doesn't break any new ground or wander too far from the common genre tropes, it remains fairly grounded in the unique challenges of the setting and each character's fight for survival. Solid performances and special FX overall make for a decent flick.
Dante’s Peak should be here. A rare disaster movie that doesn’t get absolutely ludicrous to be an effective watch
I love a good disaster flick...my faves are 'Earthquake', 'Dantes Peak', 'The Day After Tomorrow', (burn all the books on TAX laws, you idiots!) and 'The Wave' (love that one) and of course, 'Twister'--that was filmed not far from here. Had the film crews come in to where I worked when they were shooting locations. They were all excited when the storm warnings came on the radio and said they hoped they would see a REAL tornado--my reply was "No You Don't"...

Only The Brave was heartbreaking. My favorites are Towering Inferno, Atomic Twister, Category 6:Day of Destruction and just for the fun of it Lavalantua.
"Only the Brave" is extremely moving. If you listen to the audio of the real event, Josh Brolin nailed it, he got his character's voice perfectly in that final communication
The core was a great movie, I rather watch it any day of the week than watch Moonfall.

The cast is what made that movie work. The science is trash, but the acting talent and chemistry is off the charts
What about the 1950 film, 'Panic In The Streets'? Directed by Elia Kazan and starring Richard Widmark and Jack Palance, it is the tale of a government health officer (Widmark) discovering that someone in New Orleans has the "pneumomic plague", a respiratory version of the bubonic plague, and Widmark must find "Patient Zero" before New Orleans, and possibly all of America, is wiped out by the contagion.

Fave Disaster films: The Towering Inferno, The Poseidon Adventure (the Original under Irwin Allen), & Armageddon.
"ONLY THE BRAVE" (2017) thumbs up!
0:25 I love the Core, no matter is underrated but it's science!
Deep Impact is one of my favorite disaster movies.
The Perfect Storm is one of my favorite disaster movies. It’s the most realistic disaster movie I know.
core was so good. Scientifically i dont know how accurate it was but it was good.

It's actually well known as one of the least scientifically accurate movies of all time. Great movie though!
I like how the last word of the Mars Attack segment is "China," then the China Syndrome segment starts. Nice!
the best thing about Miracle Mile is that you actually feel the tension because you don't know if everything is real or not until about the last 15- 20 minutes of the movie
Thank you for the update, WatchMojo..!! The Towering Inferno (1974) and Earthquake (1974) were good movies to watch. 🤣

My top disaster movies are The Core, Dante’s Peak, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012, San Andreas, Geostorm, Outbreak, Armageddon, Daylight and I reckon you could count Vertical Limit as a disaster movie.
Deepwater Horizon is a helluva film. You really feel like you are with those people on that rig as it's about to blow.
The Core low key one of my favorite movies… shhh don’t tell anyone
I'm really into disaster movies and was pleasantly surprised to see a few here I didn't know. As for my favorite? It's a tie between The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno. They may have not been the first disaster films in history (earlier examples being War of the Worlds and A Night to Remember), but those two by the Master of Disaster himself Irwin Allen defined the genre and set the standard by which all others are judged.
Volcano with Tommy Lee Jones is underrated

Enjoyed all these movies. far better than modern movies as they relied on actors and story telling
I saw the miracle mile in the theater. I loved it, very realistic handling of the situation.
If you ever get a chance, KZread Only The Brave movie clips and then KZread real radio traffic from the Yarnell Hill fire. Josh Brolin nailed the way Eric Marsh sounded in real life and the film is such a fitting tribute to those heroes we lost.
"These Final Hours" should be on this list.
I stream most of this list at least once a year. All are favorites and truly underrated.
Definitely feel like Armageddon, Dante’s Peak, and Volcano should’ve made the list. Yeah, they all had lots of scientific inaccuracies, but they were still really good fun movies
Dante's peak is one of my favorites. And i also really like The day after tomorrow.
I love the China syndrome and Deep Water Horizon!
Only the Brave makes me cry every time I watch it, it's so incredibly good!
one point about "the perfect storm", the soundtrack made this movie memorable, like the tune in Armageddon, perfect score for the movie, one bar of it, and you know the movie it's from.

Seeking a friend for the end of the world
Category 6 Day of Destruction is one of my favorite disaster movies and is very underrated, especially for a TV movie. It has good acting from Randy Quaid, Thomas Gibson who would just a year later go on to do Criminal Minds, and even Brian Dennehy. Not to mention, the CGI in it still looks great to this day. Highly recommend checking it out.
Firestorm (Wings Hauser), Lightning: Fire From The Sky (Jesse Eisenberg).
Early 90s made for tv movie the big one:the great Los Angeles earthquake
I've always wondered why Michael Criton's work doesn't emphasize that he was a physician and his M.D. had a lot to do with his projects. It's sad that he dies so young as I'm certain he had more to say.
Geostorm is a guilty pleasure of mine. Love me some Gerard Butler❤ Also, I really liked the Poseidon remake as well. It was a nice update to the original. The capsizing scene was amazing.
Seeking a Friend for the end of the World took the “a meteor is going to wipe us out” story and lead off with the total failure of the obligatory heroic mission to stop it and instead showed humanity collapsing as they slowly came to terms with the inevitable.
What about Daylight?! People mainly didn’t like it because Stallone wasn’t shooting bad guys in the face, but come on!
I’m 10/10. And I think miracle mile is still one of the best sleeper hits of all time. And if I’m remembering my 90’s correctly, Deep Impact, which I found to be more realistic, was competing at the box with Armageddon.
I'm not sure this counts as it's more post-apocalyptic than disaster, but my guilty pleasure film is Damnation Alley.
As someone with a degree in Geology, I love the movie The Core. There is so much wrong in it, that its a blast to watch. Kinda like Sharknado lol
I enjoyed The Core. I don't see Perfect Storm and Deepwater Horizon as underrated. If you count mini series Atomic Train was also good. As others have said Dante's Peak and Volcano are others
I loved Mars Attacks! 🤣🤣
If unbelievable, inaccurate disaster movies are a guilty pleasure for you (much like they are for me) then I urge you to watch the Scorpion TV Series. Each episode is like a 45 minute disaster movie, they try to root it in science but they take a lot of creative liberties and do away with science from time to time. Either way, if you like disaster movies, you'll probably like Scorpion!
Saw the core in theatres, I was 14, it was awesome
Not sure if this counts but Cloverfield. I can watch that over and over.
I would never classify Only The Brave as a disaster flick. It demeans the film's importance an emotional impact. Forest fires themselves can be considered disasters, but the film never focuses on them, nor does it depict the Hotshots as "superheroes". It's a powerful film with an ending among the most gut wrenching in film history. To call it a disaster film lessens it.
Always liked Airport, The Towering Inferno, and The Posiedon Adventure.
How did I miss seeing Miracle Mile? I'm a huge fan of all the rest.

Do catch it! I loved the movie. And watch out for the exhibit on the evolution of life - methinks Fat Boy Slim used the idea for his music video Right Here, Right Now
I thought The Core movie was good. I like how that hacker turned from a trouble maker to a boy who prevented evil people from turning the core into a weapon and used his talent to make sure everyone knows the heroic sacrifices the heroes made.
Nasum - Fear of the China Syndrome is a great song.
Not sure how you can count these all as underrated.
Before being produced, MIRACLE MILE had been declared one of Hollywood's best unproduced scripts.
I loved Deepwater Horizon what a great underrated movie and a shocking true story and great performances by the actors it fells so real and your scared for all of them and shocked that they all did not die sadly 11 people died in that disaster.
Deep impact was a great film and much more realistic. It was also the first time a black president was seen on screen. I remember applause when he walked out on screen.
Deepwater Horizon was great!!!
I love The Core and Deep Impact
I cry at Deep Impact when the meteor hits the Earth and the effects after
Honestly, they need to split this list into disaster movies and real disasters docudramas.
No Escapes (2020) Mira (2022)
