That’s the point of movie trailers: To make a movie look good
One I'm surprised no one brings up is "Man of the year" (2006) which was advertised as a goofy political comedy starring Robin Williams as a comedian who decided to run for president and won, but it was actually a conspiracy thriller with occasional comedic moments.
Spongebob: Sponge Out of Water. The way the trailer sets up the movie was perfect. Starting within the 2D-world of Bikini Bottom before moving upwards the shore where the REAL fun begins. But the movie mostly takes place underwater for 3/5ths or 4/5ths of the movie(?). I assume the 3D animation and getting land to film the movie was pricy, so choices had to be made. Still, it could've been SO much better.
The misleading that Godzilla 2014 was good in terms of pleasantly surprising people like me who prefer seeing Godzilla fighting other monsters as opposed to being solo and destroying stuff on his own Seeing my first Godzilla battle in theaters is an experience I will never forget.

The only clues that Mean Girls 2024 was a musical from the trailer, was Regina starting to sing, and the musical note in the logo. Many musicals seem to be ashamed of BEING musicals, as evidenced by Sweeney Todd, Les Miserables and Wonka.

Are you talking about the Danny Boyle movie Sunshine where they travel to the Sun to try and ignited again with a bomb? It was a really good sci-fi drama and suspense piece up until the last act with the dude from the 1st ship being a psycho murderer and then it turned into a slasher/action movie at the end.
Here's 2 examples missing from your list: Firstly, Sucker Punch. The trailer for that movie made it look incredible, a totally off-the-wall action movie with amazing effects, girls fighting giant stone samurais with machine guns and all sorts. Turns out they were fantasy sequences and most of the movie takes place in an asylum where girls do ballet. Bitterly disappointing! This should have definitely made this list! Second, Phenomenon. Not as confident on this one as it dates back to when I was around 12 years old. At the time Independence Day and X-Files meant kids our age were obsessed with aliens. The trailer for Phenomenon made it seem like it was all about aliens so me and a bunch of friends excitedly went to see it. It's basically about a guy who gets cancer or something. It was so boring we ended up running around the conveniently empty screening. Should make an honourable mention! Scanning through the comments looks like you need to make another list for this topic!

That's one of my problems with the movie it couldn't decide who's the main character in not just the film but the sequel trilogy, Finn or Rey. Rey being the face of the sequel trilogy felt like a last minute writing change which goes to show how unplanned the trilogy was.

Let’s not also forget The Village. People who forgive the movie always argue “Well, if you saw the trailer, you probably expected a horror film. But it’s not. It’s a love story.” …granted, BOTH stories sucked and I just expected a good film, but one can’t help but see how awful the marketing was for that movie.
Love your video, WatchMojo
Number one should've been Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. The trailer made it look like it was gonna be dinosaurs running wild in America. Most of the trailer shows scenes from the last five minutes of the movie so after seeing it in the theater, we realized that the NEXT one was gonna be dinosaurs in America. Then, we waited four years for dinosaurs in America, only to find out in the first few minutes in a montage clip that they had been a problem but were now captured and in a remote sanctuary. Also, there was an infestation of giant locusts and that was going to be the main focus.
“Place Beyond The Pines” While still an awesome film. The trailer made it seem like another “Drive” film due to its success with Gosling. It was indeed definitely not a Drive copycat. I’ll also add “It Comes At Night”. A movie advertised as a tense creature horror film and it was just an empty boring psychological thriller.

I’m really surprised “Poltergeist” didn’t make the list. My mom said the trailer made it look like a supernatural comedy, sort of what “Ghostbusters” would become a couple years later. Nope. It was a horror film, and since she detests horror, she HATED the movie and felt like the preview ripped her off!
That mean Girls remake was terrible and the trailer showed it.
For me, one of the movies in more recent years that I felt a sense of robbed from was Avengers: Age of Ultron. That initial trailer felt so dark and serious with Spader menacingly delivering "No Strings On Me", it just felt like this was going to be an intense MCU film with a lot at stake. And then the movie came out and felt largely boring and predictable although a few good scenes throughout, with Ultron really not feeling like a threat at all and the film basically focusing more on "seeding" for upcoming sequels or setting up next movies that it didn't spend enough time focusing on its own. I felt this movie was completely different from that trailer and pushed me into hardly ever watching movie trailers anymore, especially with MCU has I learned they were doing more bait and switch to avoid spoilers but also change a movie's tone. Now I'll watch an initial teaser/reveal and maybe the first trailer and that's it.
@Fluffyudders

In fairness, I'm not really sure how much of that is the fault of the trailer. They absolutely dropped the ball with Ultron and ruined one of Marvel's best villains. Executive decision was misleading in a good way. We thought it would be just another bad Steven Segal movie. But when his character was killed off in the first 15 minutes it became instantly better.
I remember The American with George Clooney getting some flak because the audience assumed it would be an international action thriller, judging by the trailer. Instead, if was more of a 60s homage crime-drama closer to arthouse.

I went and saw that at the movie theater and was so mad I'd wasted my money. I thought it would be more spy action and instead got boring.
I'm gonna drop a movie title I doubt many will know off the bat: Katsuhito Ishii's "The Taste Of Tea". Granted, every last one of the strange scenes shown in the trailer actually **did** end up in the film, but the film itself turned out to be a surprisingly chill, down-to-Earth story with the majority of the odd moments simply occurring within stories being told to the little girl protagonist by the adults around her. Frankly, the only TRULY strange thing in the film was Protag-Chan's hallucination(?) of a giant version of her own face silently watching her throughout the film, and a silly (and more importantly, 100% diegetic) earworm of a song about a mountain in the middle.
On Yesterday, the only thing that annoyed me was how heavy they went on the love story part of it. Wasn’t expecting that from the trailer. But, it was worth sitting through all the awkward, chemistry-less love story parts to get to the scene with Robert Carlyle.

The scenes that showed the action "a hand popping out of ice, a dark-hair girl getting dragged with lights, someone falling from the roof" was all fake. Those scenes in the trailer made it look like it was going to be a fun action slasher but instead got like 45min of back-story and then finally action last 30 minutes but happen so fast and made you think like wait... thats it?
There was a Gene Wilder movie called The Frisco Kid where he played a rabbi from Poland. Trailer made you think it was a zany Mel Brooks style comedy. But it was more of a sweet buddy movie with more drama than laughs.

The Resident Evil: Retribution one was a major letdown since in the trailer, it was mentioned by Albert Wesker that the Umbrella Corporation has taken over New York, Moscow, Tokyo in which it made it sound like Alice and the others were traveling across the world to take down Umbrella but upon watching the movie, the storyline actually took place in the underwater testing facility that’s located underneath the frozen wasteland of Siberia I think. I mean the movie was still good but it seemed a bit like the trailer was saying one thing whilst the movie was saying something else completely different. Or so that’s just my opinion.
The trailer for the John Leguizamo film _Empire_ conveyed an action revenge story after Leguizamo's hoodlum character is scammed out of lot of money. In the actual film the scam is a tertiary storyline. Trailer footage implying revenge on the scammers is "just" footage of Leguizamo's crew taking over local bars are such for the criminal Empire for which Leguizamo works. (One redeeming scene has Leguizamo internally explaining how to ride out being arrested and police-interrogated.)
I suppose the alternative is an accurate trailer that shows literally every moment of action in three minutes.
I remember how excited I was for the second Spongebob movie, its trailers promised that the main characters were going to be out of the water, becoming superheroes and joining forces... only for it to happen on the last 20 minutes left in the movie, the trailers essentially spoiled the whole climax and misslead 12 year old me into thinking that the whole movie was taking place in the surface
I not only felt tricked but completely lied to when I saw Justice league in theaters. I went in expecting an epic Zack Snyder style conclusion to BVS, and after watching the first teaser, I got really hyped! I watched the actual movie, and I couldn't have been more disappointed to find the tone, style, and even the color completely different. As well as several pivotal scenes from the previews completely absent
No Rogue One?
When I think of a misleading trailer, I think of Tammy. It was shown as another Melissa McCarthy raunchy comedy, but it was actually a really sweet movie. Trailers need to at least get the tone of the movie across!
I'm surprised Dead Poet Society wasn't mentioned. I recall the trailer for that film making me think I was going to see a comedy.
Funny People. The trailer had you expecting a light comedy, not a drama on mortality and regret. I was so pissed watching this in theatres, I'd gone in needing a light movie and absolutely didn't get one. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. The trailer promised a steampunk sci-fi action movie starring Angelina Jolie. The movie instead gave us a parody of a film that doesn't exist with ridiculous set pieces that failed to thrill, dialogue that makes Uwe Boll look like Shakespeare, and barely any Angelina. Pan's Labyrinth. The trailer promised an adult fantasy film where a girl escapes a sad life into a fantastical world she was a long lost Princess. What we got was a grimmer than grim portrayal of a girl with a fantasy that was a coping mechanism to deal with an absolutely hopeless crushing reality.
Collateral Beauty is the soapbox I stand on for a misleading trailer. I love the movie, but the trailer greatly frustrated me!
I give shoutout to instant Family - the trailer portrays it as a cringey comedy but it’s actually a heartwarming drama about becoming a family unit. The trailer did it dirty, I might’ve never seen it if my group was not seeing it one night but it was a pleasantly good movie.
The Grey is fantastic - The Snowman trailer had me excited, but the movie was horrendous
Bicentennial Man had me effed up as a kid! I thought it was gonna be a fun family movie, but that movie was sad and depressing.
The original Bring It On movie also had scenes filmed specifically for the trailer which showed more of the rival school, the Clovers.
The Grey was so good!!!
I actually liked The Grey more than I thought I might... so no issues with the trailer. irked about the Yesterday trailer but not to point of supporting class-action suit. Quite liked the movie. Robert Carlyle's character was a very happy surprise. far rather Ana de Armas misdirection than if they'd included that bit...
Not having Collateral Beauty on this list is criminal
I've only seen Yesterday, Bridge To Terabithia, Alien 3, Passengers, Downsizing and The Grey.
I didn’t find the trailers for Godzilla misleading at all, yes Brian Cranston had a lot of screen time in the trailers but he also had a heavy presence in the first act of the film, where is it mentioned that an important character can’t die halfway through the film.
