Situational irony is when something happens contradictory to what you thought would happen. It was ironic that the runner got softlocked while he was just educating the viewers about the potential softlock that could happen. There are different kinds of irony ._.

A lot of the guys in the videos surprisingly were cool about it and didn't rage despite having wasted their time by the softlock, at like 5:24 or 2:00 or 4:11 (who put up an entertaining poker face), or anyone really. Cool people.

i mean its something so unordinary, so weird. that you cant help but be facinated. i softlocked hollow knight once. I ended up being stuck in a loop where my character would fall down into the next zone. only to jump up immediately after landing back up into the previous zone. then he would fall down again. i was so baffled i took a video of it.

I once softlocked Zelda Ocarina of Time (impressive I know). I was in Kakariko Village, and angered a cucoo, but I got trapped between the well and the wooden beam. a cucoo was on me, so I would get knocked down, but I had invincibility frames so I wouldn't get hurt either

That's pretty cool. I softlocked it too by pressing A too much and too fast whilst I was talking to a scarecrow (I think as child Link?), and caused the game to think I was still in a conversation when I wasn't, trapping me there. It's happened on more than one occasion too, thankfully I've kinda learnt to be careful (and cautious) around scarecrows now

I saw Odme streaming the 1982 stars Mario run and he softlocked in Galaxy 2 (he had to lead a Goomba to the gold robot and as the cutscene began to play, one of the poles pushed the Goomba out of the containment area, freezing the game). He was at least 12 hours in, but Galaxy 2 autosaved so he just had to quickly reset the game. He ended up getting a new WR in the initial 602 before he continued with the other games. VL

i found a softlock in Binding of Isaac that was so bad the developer fixed it in the next patch, despite no one else experiencing it. I had given myself Flight by using the Bible. On a little island unreachable except by flight there was a gray chest (need bombs to open it.) I bombed it and it dropped a bunch of pickups. What I didn't know is that one of the other rocks opened up a trap door to a crawl space. while getting the itemsi went into the crawl space. I came out of it, I'd lost Flight and couldnt use the bible again. I wrote all this because I wanted to make sure lots of folks knew what a soft lock was. A soft lock is not simply that the game keeps running. That's a normal lock. A soft lock is when the game is running, you have full control over your character, the game is working fully as intended, but due to whatever circumstances you can no longer progress, in a way that was not intended by the developer.

Just want to say I appreciate the research you put into the speedrunning community. I don't know if you have videos about this next topic or if you take requests, but I was interested in something along the lines of the biggest differences between world record times and the time that beat the previous record. For example, maybe some runner found some glitch that shaved off an hour or so, beating the previous record by that much. Just something I'd be interested in to chart the development of speedruns as a whole.

Cosmo isn't an actual transgender, he's a kid with some serious issues. He clearly went this route to try to cope with some broken shit in his head, not because he wanted to be a female. Which, by the way, is fine. I'm not going to judge anyone for anything if they aren't encroaching on my life or hurting anyone. Still, Cosmo is very much in need of help from someone somewhere. I fear his current route ends in suicide or a fatal OD.

I remember softlocking in two games. The first was for a game called Monster Madness Battle for Suburbia. This one has a few ways to softlock the game. The first one is during the grim reaper battle if you get too far away from it when it goes underground. The softlock is that it goes out of bounds. The second one was during the first boss of the final chapter where when I died in a specific spot I didn't respawn. This was in the PS3 version of the game where in the Xbox version if you die it results in a game over. I think I was in a corner of the arena of the boss fight when it occurred which is on a massive drawbridge. Another one you can essentially softlock this game by simply heading into areas you're not supposed to like the lake in the PS3 version of the cemetery level or going into certain rooms of the high school interior level by jumping into them from above. The game is definitely buggy alright. The second game was the fifth and only entry to have an English version in the Legendary Starfy series. I softlocked there by dying during the transition into the second phase of the giant penguin boss battle. Normally it results in a game over when you die but this time the protagonist slowly fell off the screen as the boss continued it's attacks without the game over screen showing up.

fun little fact i encountered a soft lock in mass effect andromeda which i can only assume had to do with my map not registering the fact i had left the large sanctuary on havarl and acted like i was still in there resulting in the map being pitch black, wether or not thats the case whenever i hit an area that would cause the game to autosave in being youre going to a different part my character would be frozen in place and nothing but reloading the game would fix it

why do almost all the speedrunners use the japanese versions of nintendo games? is it because they're the first version of the games, and therefore, have more glitches?

AZuRe CMF Japanese versions sometimes have different glitches than USA or EU versions, and sometimes is because they have less textboxes...

Sometimes that, and Japanese text uses less characters than other languages and so it's faster dealing with Japanese text sections than English.

There's different reasons depending on the game but the most common is in text heavy games (Ocarina of Time for example) with no option to skip said text, the japanese version has faster text due to less characters. There's other reasons in some other games like for example in mario kart 64 there's a glitch exclusive to the japanese version and that's why they use it.

The text boxes in games where you have to skip through a million text boxes. Playing Japanese versions gives you less text boxes in most cases because japanese characters convey more meaning with less writing. This saves a ton of time in many old games where skipping text boxes was a game mechanic.

My favorite is the one in Lego Star Wars. I hope you include it in a vid so others can see it. There's a part where you have to push a cart through an area. One of the doorways loads a transition scene. But if you accidentally drop the cart onto the doorway, then you can't get to it any more. Before you reach it, you'll transition to the next room. And if you come back, you'll load-in with the cart behind you (at the doorway).

I found a softlock in lego lord of the rings on the wii where during the nazgul boss fight, when he becomes vulnerable, if you don't hit the helm of the nazgul with the very tip of the blade, and hit him with the center of the blade, he wont get back up, and you cannot hit him again. there is also another softlock in that same battle where the litch king can get permanently stuck walking into one of the spots where you are supposed to make him hit with his mace.

I haven't seen anyone mention it, so if you're wondering what happens in windwaker: when Link gets to greatfish, he needs to be able to walk forward to talk to the bird postman. When the water is too high, since Link is in a swimming animation he can't physically walk and the cutscene can't play.
