To me, "On The Beach" is the most heartrending of all apocalyptic movies. Based on a novel by Nevil Shute, the only place left with survivors is Australia, and they know the radiation cloud is coming. People react in different ways, feeling intensely alone in their pain. The most shocking scene was when a submarine surfaces in San Fransico Bay, hoping that they have survivors, only to look through the telescopes at the empty streets and buildings...it made a huge impression on me at the time, since I lived next to San Francisco and the idea of it completely empty and deserted was truly shocking...during the film the sorrowful Australian tune "Waltzing Matilda", written after WWI and Gallipoli, weaves through the background, reminding us that an apocalypse had already happened for so many, long ago.

@@piotrd.4850 Oh god! "Threads".... The movie that destroyed my childhood and made me seriously look at Nietzsche as having the appropriate outlook for the future... You are right, Threads is right there with a perfect slap in the face to get across that there will be NO winners in a nuclear war..."Grave of the Fireflies" and "Requiem for a Dream" are big runners up, but Grave of the Fireflies, after I realized that it was autobiographical, really broke me. I have to say that I decided a long time ago that I'd rather be hopeful and altruistic than depressed and selfish, I still get depressed, but found that doing at least one unselfish thing every day, which started as a kind of dare during a brunch (of all things!), over 15 years ago, almost erased my depression and gave me ideas for started a charity. No matter how hopeless you feel, you can make someone else's whole day, or life, depending on your action...it has led to some incredible people...

  • @jdice6868

I mentioned it because it was left off of a similar list by someone else. It's the darkest dystopian movie. Unfortunately, if people are starving and the government has fallen, I imagine it's an accurate foretelling of humankind's reaction. At least the book was beautifully written which helped me get through it. It reminded me of Capote's "In Cold Blood" that way. I finished the book in 2 days. Then it took me 2 years to get up the nerve to see the movie through. I highly recommend the book. Cormac McCarthy is a genius. At least the way it's beautifully written restores your soul as the bleakness of the story drains it.

Kilgore Trout I’m not religious and I wasn’t really put off by the use of the Bible because that was the character’s motivation. You don’t have to be a Christian to see the power that hope has over someone. And yes the movie revolves around Eli’s protection of the book and his religious views, but it still shows ideas of morality that anyone can understand and the aesthetics to the setting and music all worked well together. Plus this movie actually takes a jab at religion an example being when Gary Oldman’s character said how if he has the book he could control his people, showing the worst of religion. Even Eli at the end of the movie says how he realized he put most of his life into protecting the book and his religion when he was doing the opposite of what a religious “moral” person should do because he’d avoid helping others to stay on his path. Religion may be one of its themes but it’s not the movie’s story.

Possibly the best post-apocalyptic movie ever is the russian film "Dead Man's Letters" (Pisma myortvogo cheloveka) made in1986. It´s trully a gem. And it is a shame that so few people have seen it. If posible watch it !!!

You're blurring the lines between the Post-Apocalyptic genre and Dystopian genre. Similar but not the same. Mad Max =Post-Apocalyptic... The Matrix = Dystopian. Anyway, Omega Man with Charlton Heston should have been on this list or one of its other iterations ie The last Man on Earth w/Vincent Price, or I am Legend with Will Smith.

M Callahan I would definitely consider The Matrix post-apocalypse. Brazil would be dystopian. The Matrix takes place in a world where the few surviving humans live near the earth’s core after they scorched the earth trying to destroy the AI they ironically created. That’s absolutely an apocalypse.

Agreed. I hate when people mix the two genres as they are very different from each other. Dystopian tends to be the polar opposite of post-apocalyptic anyway.

In a post-apocalyptic scenario, what few seem willing to face is, there's gonna be cannibalism because as soon as enough people get hungry 3noug, all bets are off! Some will figure, "If I'm going to die, I might as well eat this guy lying in his shallow, grave! This has happened many times in mankind's history, when people were stressed out, they did whatever they could to survive one more day! Cannibalism would happen!
