The moth joke is easily the greatest moment in the entire history of The Tonight Show. It may be the single greatest late night interview of all time. Norm always brought his A-game to Conan's show, more than any other late night host.

  • @agresch9012

Apparently, Conan asked to have him for a second segment that night without Norm's knowledge. When Norm found out that he had to fill another 7 minutes ON THE FLY, the Moth Joke is what he came up with. He drew it out to fill the time. All of that was improvised. What a genius. My favourite comedian, I loved that twinkle in his eye whenever he knew he was doing something "wrong". Mischievous scoundrel. I am not afraid to admit that I have cried several times, and yes, I do own a doghouse, so lay off. His only sin was dying so young. I will always remember him as a real jerk for doing that.

Oh snap I forgot about that but it might be one of the greatest Norm moments and for those who can't find it: Norm is on Jon Stewart and this might be just a few days after 'The Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin is killed by a Stingray. I'm paraphrasing from memory but Norm starts: Ya, heard that, people saying he was only 38 year old but Id say 38 is a damn ripe old age for a crocodile hunter! *Jon Stewart is suppressing laughs* Norm: You know who's really upset about this the most? * Jon Stewart begs Norm "please... please dont' make me laugh at this, please * Norm continues: "The Crocodiles that's who! Can you imagine, this guy spent his whole life taunting crocodiles and what finally kills him? A fcking fish! *Stewart is crumpling over hiding his face* Norm: Imagine the crocodiles talking about this and one says "Ya.. I almost had him once.. I could have killed him AND his kid!" and Stewart is dead laughing.

I read in Chaplin's autobiography that he thought when people become down or depressed, they either turn to comedy or philosophy for relief. Norm had this absurdly blunt, deceptively naeive persona with this otherworldy mind and take on things. The first standup joke I ever remember is his bit about how he's never looked young for his age. The only time he did was when he was a 1 year old. People would come up and say, "You look great! What are you, zero?" and I'd say "oh no I'm one over here". Its a weird one sharing this because one a small few of my friends really 'get' Norm living in the UK, but he's had such a huge influence on how look at things, (I couldn't count all the times I've repeated and butchered his jokes to my friends) so its really warming to see the impact and affection being shared on here.

But in the second interview, he said: “Remember in the last interview I said Don Ohlmeyer was a good guy, and you kept saying he was an idiot and a pinhead? Turns out you were right.” That was after he found out that Ohlmeyer wasn’t going to let him out of his contract with NBC. Ohlmeyer was trying to wreck Norm’s career by not letting him work, and Letterman had him on often during that time so he could get on TV in front of a national audience.
