The first Toyota Venza version is my top pick. I still have my 2009 XLE with almost 300,000 miles. It still have the original engine and original transmission. It have some issues but, none mayor issues. The only biggest issue was the AC. Overall in my 15 years ownership maybe we have spend on fixing around 6K with the AC replacement taking more than 40% of the repair cost. The only car that beat it is my 1988 Mazda B2200. It also have the original engine and original transmission.

I have a 2020 Forester and it’s been great so far. I bought it because every Subaru owner that I met loved their cars. It wasn’t even on my radar tbh. Just got a ‘24 Crosstrek and can say that I’m very happy with it. I’ve heard people say the engine is underpowered but I have no problem getting up to speed. The touchscreen has been very responsive. Wireless Apple CarPlay works great. The thing feels like a tank.

Why did you get a new one just after 3 years though? If you loved the old one so much. I drive a car I bought used in 2018. European model you probably never heard of, a Dacia Duster. But it's so reliable I just love it to bits. Not a single fault except usual maintenance, and it will be 10 years next year. I love it so I plan on driving it until it dies. Great video! I completely agree with everything you stated. I kept my 2004 Toyota Camry LE (4-cylinder/automatic) until trading it in 2011 for a new Honda CR-V SE 4WD which I'd still have if I hadn't moved from Portland, Maine to Phoenix, Arizona where AWD isn't needed. I traded the CR-V for a new 2017 Camry LE (4-cylinder/automatic) which I still have. Both of my Camrys have been non-hybrids because I found that with careful driving, you can get outstanding gas mileage without having the higher insurance premiums that are associated with most hybrids. Generally speaking, hybrids are more expensive to insure because their greater complexity makes them more expensive to repair than their non-hybrid counterpart. Neither of my Camrys, nor my CR-V, ever needed ANY repairs...they were completely flawless vehicles.

Subaru Forester: I had a Subaru Forester 2004. Bought it in 2007. Was made in Japan. Following is the list of problems I had with it until 2018: Replaced the alternator three times. Replaced the A/C compressor. The sun roof stopped moving so I had it sealed shut. Repair wasn't advised by the Subaru dealer. The tail gate started leaking. So I just stopped taking it to the car wash. Driver side A pillar trim came off. I had to tape it. Passenger side window had some type of leak and the resulting air noise was really loud above 90KPH. Started having hiccups and was diagnosed with a problem in the turbo. Ended up donating it to some kidney foundation. Got a CAD 300 tax receipt for it. Those are just the things I remember. I had a Subaru "Justy" decades ago. Had to take it for wheel alignment every 6 months using hydraulic jacks! So nope! Life is too short. Gonna try an unreliable German now.

I bought a 2011 Forester new in December 2010. Drove it until last week. In 13+ years, it was a solid, reliable vehicle. Never had a single mechanical repair done outside of maintenance - regular service, tires, and brakes. Despite a lot of off-roading, having been rear-ended twice (I did have body work done for that), and just a bunch of bumps, scratches, and nicks, it continues to run reliably. I never thought I'd buy another vehicle other than another Forester in the future. I test drove a new 2024 Forester - top of the line and fully loaded. Loved everything about it, but the sluggish performance was a huge turnoff. My old one was manual and I had great control over power and acceleration. With an automatic transmission, it was just anemic. Merging on the highway was difficult. Passing a vehicle took forever. Pulling out from an intersection in traffic was terrible, and it was not confidence inspiring. I just couldn't see myself driving that for the next decade or more even though I truly loved everything else about it. It unfortunately just didn't have it where it counts most for me. It's sad that I had to walk away from the Subaru dealership.

My brother in-law has a Subaru for nearly 2 decades and it’s a stick shift. He loves using it going from Brooklyn to Up State NY. For me as a NJ newly licensed driver I love the Japanese car industry and am familiar with them. Budget, lifestyle, and personality wise Subaru is more likely my choice where I live down the NJ Coast. I want a hybrid or an EV but maybe result to an ICE.

I purchased a 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness based on the glowing reviews. I must have the lemon of the bunch. CVT whines so much that the radio cannot drown it out. It also bucks when cold. Every panel stared rattling after a month of ownership. Entertainment screen lags for 2-5 seconds after input. Dealer says all is normal and nothing can be fixed. I would not recommend. I purchased in March 2023 as a leftover. I’ll be getting rid of it by January.

I am sorry to hear that. I had a 2016 Outback and loved it. I had always wanted an Outback. Unfortunately, I decided to get rid of mine after 18 months because of clunking noises coming out of the steering wheel and hollow-sounding passenger door. I suspected that it would get worse, and I knew that the dealership would not be able to fix those noises. But I still miss that butter-smooth 6-cylinder engine.

Back in April of this year, I stumbled across a video on the 2021 Mazda Mazda6 Signature. I fell in love with that car immediately. Immediately! I watched more videos, I watched pros and cons (no real cons other than turbo lag). I wanted to drive one. I found one on the used lot of a Hyundai dealer. Thats just wrong by the way. So I drove there and test drove the Mazda. Yep.. L O V E ! ! ! I traded my 2020 Frontier Crew Cab 4x4 w/ Lift kit and Cooper All Terrains. The payment is about the same. Thats what I told my wife. She calls the Mazda 'Christine'. She thinks the car doesn't like her. And she is the other woman now. She might be right.

I Have a Prius with 200 k miles and besides changing the hybrid battery at 190 k miles for $1600 ( and now having a lifetime warranty on it), this is by far the most reliable car I've had. I have done nothing to it and it seems like it is going to run forever and getting the 50 miles per gallon is a big plus. At this point I would only look at Toyota-Lexus, Honda-Acura and Mazdas for my next car....can't beat the reliability. After having a Mercedes, BMW and Audi, and having all sorts of problems with them, I don't think I'll ever go to these cars again.

The Camry is built in KY, and the Mazda CX-50 is built in Alabama, in the same factory as the Corolla Cross. For Subarus, the great all wheel drive comes with more overall maintenance costs, see videos about spark plugs every 30 thousand miles, and the parts needed after 100 thousand miles for many of these.

Nice list... I have the 2012 CRV and still going strong in 2023. Curious, when you say something is 2.1 x higher than the average SUV ownership, what exactly do you mean ? Do you mean that this group of owners tend to keep their cars 210% longer than the average SUV owner (i.e. more than three times longer) ? What is the average amount of time an average SUV owner keep their cars ? I am having a difficult time wrapping my head around this metric. Must be the triptaphane from last night's turkey (Thanksgiving Day)

According to the study, 16.8% of SUV's are kept by the original owner after 10 years, so 2.1 x higher means that 35% keep that model for 10 years. Owner retention was used as a measure of owner satisfaction.
