Seriously - BARBRA. Streisand is still in the top 10 of solo female record sales. She cut 117 singles, 36 albums, 9 compilations, 7 live LPs, and 15 soundtracks. All this before streaming, which allows people to buy only one song off of an album. Taylor Swift and Rihanna have incredible sales records but without global streaming and video platforms like KZread, doubt they'd be at that level of sales. And their recording careers don't begin to touch Streisand's output, her range of genres, and her ability to craft a song. Singing is NOT just about belting, not about hip-hop dancing with a crew while you're lip-syncing to a pre-recorded song, or only performing in a single genre. Barbra is on this list FIFTY FOUR YEARS after she gave that performance in Funny Girl (1968). She's the definitive singer of the 20th century. You (and she) can take that to the bank. She didn't just give an astounding performance, she's had an astounding career.

Seriously, limiting this to just ten was a shame. I can easily think of names to add that did not get an honorable mention. Ethel Merman being a notable absentee. Carol Burnett's rendition of both Shy and I'm Still Here are both amazing. Carol Channing, Pearl Baily, Angela Landsbury, Nell Carter, heck even Julie Andrews had some belters in My Fair Lady.

I think Heather Headley’s performance in Aida could’ve been at least an honorable mention. But if one song had to be chosen I’m debating between Easy as Life considering her singing “easy as life” at the end of the song, or Dance of The Robe where she does the last “it’s enough” her voice is powerful you can hear the emotion she sings with in both of the songs. Easy as Life being her solo with an internal struggle of “do I marry to free my captured father and free the slaves or marry who I love and still have my father captured and slaves still slaves”, and Dance of The Robe being somewhat a duet with Schele Williams with the chorus pleading to be freed from slavery.

How could Ethel Merman's "Everything's Coming up Rose's" from Gypsy not be #1 ? It (and she) nearly invented the "Belt" I agree with Babs being in the #2 spot only if Ms Merman secures #1. Also Chita Rivera's "A Boy Like That" in 1957's original Broadway staging of "West Side Story". (or, if you prefer, her Tony nominated performance as Rose in "Bye Bye Birdie") So: #1 Ethel Merman in Gypsy (a crowning achievement for the Queen of the Belters) #2 Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl (and any other musical in which she opens her mouth) #3 Chita Rivera in 1961's West Side Story movie. (there's a reason Spielberg cast her as Pops widow in his mixed-blessings 2021 adaptation) Then fit the rest of your compilation under these.

@@keithl.alexander3580 Hudson introduced the song to an entire new generation, and she is the only one who could brought that song to film the way she did. Holliday was perfect for the stage. Hudson was perfect for the feature film. She is one of the very few talents who became an equal to the original portrayal of an iconic BW role. There's a very good reason why Hudson won the Academy Award for acting. She killed it. Plus her performance made movie theathres all across the nation give her standing ovations. Holliday did that live, Hudson did that in a feature film. Both Jen infers are legends and can stand next to each other.

Jennifer Holliday is it, the end. That being said, J Hud was phenomenal in the movie remake, and deserved the many accolades she received, and I can listen to her version ant time, usually if I like the original, I don't want to hear the remake. One of my fave saved KZread videos at one time was recorded by a random fan at a J Hud concert, with Jennifer Holliday appearing unannounced to sing "And I Am Telling You", they both tore it up! I have seen several versions of them together on TV but that one was thee absolute best! J Hud had on a white outfit w pants and was barefoot, singing her face off. Haven't been able to find it lately though :(

My favorite Broadway Lady, both for acting and vocals, is Betty Buckley. While her portrayal of Grizabella is best known, her performances in 1776, The Mystery Of Edwin Drood, Triumph Of Love, Sunset Boulevard, as well as others, are beyond every other performer, making her both Broadway Royalty and a Living Legend. Also, glad you included Carolee Carmello in honorable mentions. Betty's performance with Carolee and the others in Ellegies, A Song Cycle, is exceptional and fun. For more with Betty and Carolle, check out the Christmas special from the AMC TV show "Remember WENN." I'm grateful you included Betty Lynn here, but I have been surprised how many lists you didn't include her in. Thanks for that inclusion here. I would have ranked her much higher but I'm just glad you included her.

If we are adding newer performances, you should include Joaquina Kalukango from "Paradise Square" burning down the stage and the theatre and reducing the audience to mere ashes in "Let it Burn." You can find several KZread videos out there, but the Tony Awards performance is great, and the audio of the final performance of the show (which I was lucky to attend) is phenomenal. The whole last section was interrupted by audience applause to the point that each phrase had to be dictated, one line at a time.
