    @@JacksonGrant I used to carry 3 phones all day every day, lol… because of work. My iPhone was my main phone. I also had an android phone specifically because there were a few apps I had to use for work that were only on Android. The 3rd was a blackberry because many of my international clients all used blackberry messaging and having a blackberry was the only way to communicate with them. Slowly blackberry phased out, everyone switched to WhatsApp. So I was down to 2 phones. 😂 Now, I’m 90% iPhone, but still have an Android as a backup and for some business related apps. I’d honestly like no phone. I miss the 90’s 😂

    I once dropped a Seiko Samurai onto a concrete floor. The bezel was scratched up by the crystal was fine. The thing to remember is that the crystal is part of the protection system of the watch case; a scratched mineral crystal will still protect the innards while a shattered sapphire crystal can't.

    *HARDLEX is awesome!* I am wearing an SKX013 for almost two decades now, which I banged onto almost everything, especially my faucet in the shower. There will not go a year without me at least banging my watch on a faucet or radiator. There are multiple scratches now. There is even a small chip out. But it is still functioning and waterproof. *Any sapphire crystal would have been broken several times by now.* Especially in the shower this would have been terrible. *I absolutely effing love hardlex.*

    Water resistance is really overrated with watches. If you are certified recreational diver, you can even wear a Casio F91W and go down up to 40 feet (12M) without any problems. If you want to go deeper, you need to get an open water certification of 59 feet (18M). So, if it's ISO rated like the Casio, you can go diving with it and most everyone doesn't need a 100M or even 50M water resistance. By the way, Omega Speedmaster is ISO 22810 rated for 50M and good for swimming but probably can go diving too. That said, I wouldn't go swimming with my Speedy Pro. I have a Casio Duro for that.

    Love this video! Love MWC’s style. My Hot Takes: 1. Spring Drive is hugely under appreciated: It’s unique; it’s the best of mechanical and quartz; and the smooth sweep blitzes any high beat movement. 2. Seiko/Grand Seiko seem to have started the current craze for funky dial finishes. I wish other brands would show a bit more originality/leadership. 3. Why is no one making dials from that super black stuff that absorbs 99.9% of light? Would look amazing with highly reflective hands / batons, and it would make colours really pop.

    This is one of the best takes tbh. Fully agree with the clasp issue especially. I in fact tend to prefer a stamped clasp, as I find they're often far more comfortable to be on the wrist all day than some of the other options out there. They don't diminish the look of the watch either, especially when that part of the watch only ever gets seen typically when putting it on and taking it off.

    Whoo! You didn’t disappoint here, especially right outta the blocks: seems like there's no middle-ground regarding Seiko's Hardlex - it's (mostly) love-it-or-hate-it. I'm absolutely fine with it, partly because, in my wheelhouse at least, its scratch-resistance is more than adequate (and, like you, I don’t baby my watches), partly because of their greater shatter-resistance, but *also* because most all my Hardlex-equipped Seikos appear to be fairly glare-resistant in harsh sunlight - which *is* a big deal to me. Water-resistance? Not a big deal with any ofvmy Seikos or Casios, but *might* havecbeen an issue for both my vintage Hamilton Khaki field watches, whose movements quit on me just a few months apart. Cost a bit to getvthem working again, but at least I had little trouble selling them. Divers on leather? I'm mixed on that one: yeah, thematically speaking, a pricey leather strap on a Sub is silly, but so's the fact that only a fraction of the Subs you'll see on people's wrists will get any closer to water than a lawn sprinkler or inflatable kiddies' pool.

  • @Cheeseiest1
    @Cheeseiest1Ай бұрын

    My hot take is the opposite of one of the MWC's. People care waaayyyy too much about water resistance. I think most people who care strongly have never been diving; 40m is the deepest rating hobbiest divers can be certified for, and it is flipping deep (you can't even see colors anymore at thay depth). Back in the day 30m might mean splashproof, but these days it means 30m, and that is more than enough even for the majority of actual divers.

    There is a big difference between static pressure and dynamic pressure. If you jump in a swimming pool, the instantaneous pressure on your watch case as you brake the water is going to be a lot more than 30m. That’s why 30m means splash proof, even though if you place it in a controlled chamber and pressurise it to 3 bar, it doesn’t spring a leak.

    I could not agree more on the power reserve. As an enthusiast, part of the fun is setting the watch. One thing you didn't mention as well, with a high power reserve like say 5 days, let's say you do wear the watch for a few days and it gets a near full wind in the case of an automatic. When you go to take it off, that's gonna be 5 days where the watch is running and putting more wear and tear on the movement. I think the sweet spot for me personally is 40 hours.

    Panerai has the best system of all. All you need is a toothpick, paper clip, safety pin, sharp pencil tip (or Panerai's overpriced plastic tool) and you can make a quick strap change. Once installed it is as strong as an FXD but can be used for leather, rubber or nato.

    I like quick adj́ust clasps, not so much because of hourly wrist expansion, but because it means my shaky hands and a screwdriver don’t have to get near the bracelet more than necessary between summer and winter fitment. 😂 And speaking of: pin and collar is better than screw ins. Yes it’s a faff when a collar disappears on you, but I’ve never nearly lost a watch due to vibrations with pin and collar.

    RE power reserve I don't trust automatic as I only wear a watch for 5-10 hours each day, not 24/7. So, I wind my watch each morning to maintain power; helps with accuracy as well.

    Hot take… love a manual wind!

  • @plektosgaming
    @plektosgaming18 күн бұрын

    High BPM and accuracy is important. The only reason people ever were worried about power reserves was because some early watches would need to be reset if you were, say, on a long international flight or something similar and weren't moving around enough for 8 hours or so. Or at a desk job and not really moving that much, so it wouldn't wind fully. But that was in the 60s and early 70s with very crude movements in inexpensive watches. I had a little Timex growing up that was sometimes dead in the morning if you took it off at night and slept in too long or forgot to put it back on until noon or so. But you don't need 40 hours. 24 hours is way more than you'll ever need with a modern automatic watch, and even 12 would probably be fine as the winding rotors are very sensitive now.

    @@vipnetworker This particular Garmin is what I'd consider an ideal smartwatch for watch enthusiasts - it has a MIP display, 28 days of battery life (the solar version technically doesn't require charging, weather permitting), water resistance of 100M, shock resistant, button controlled rather than a touch screen which is perfect if you've got sweaty hands or you're swimming. It also looks like a watch! It's a bit pricier than the basic G-Shock smartwatch, although the solar version is cheaper than the Rangeman or similar.

I accidentally bumped the bricks beside my door when unlocking it and my green dial Presage “Grasshopper” crystal is now scratched to hell. Looks horrible and I’ll be getting it replaced (can’t really DIY that as an amateur as on the presages the crystal is glued in, not friction fit with a gasket like the divers 😢).

    I hard agree about the power reserve. It's rare I wear a watch more than a day in a row so the power reserve rarely does me much good. Or worse, I try and lean on it and the back end of the power reserve is much less accurate so I have to set it again anyway -- looking at you Seiko 6Rs. It's clear it just makes for better marketing copy. (This is also largely true of accuracy in non-chronometer watches, which is my hot take!)

    My Duro has been my daily for 3 yrs, I work around steel shelves and monos... so I bang it often, and have never had a scratch on the mineral glass. There is a dent on the aluminum bezel, just to give you some perspective. Yes I also believe that 100m should be the minimum(preferably with a screw down crown), especially when the price goes up. And YES I understand that they probably don't neet it, but it gives me piece of mind... And hell if Casio can do it on a Duro, I DON'T see why other brands can't do it on much more expensive watches.

I do use the micro adjusts between wearing at work at a computer and being outside as I dont like the watch moving when skiing, walking the dog etc. My takes, titanium should be used more often. Tudor just seems to bring out watches in colours that make no sense. They have obvious watches everyone wants, then go and bring out others. BB58 GMT would be slam dunk in the Pepsi colour, BB58 should always have been available in monochrome, Pelegos 39mm in blue too. San Martin knows this though 😁

    I like sapphire crystals, but I also like Hardlex. Never had any issues with Hardlex on my Seiko watches. Yes, it can scratch, but if it does scratch badly, then I'd just replace the crystal. I've shattered a sapphire crystal on a watch by accidentally bumping my wrist on a door frame and had to get the crystal replaced. This was barely a week into owning the watch. It likely would not have shattered had it been Hardlex, mineral glass, or acrylic. What I'm basically saying, is that sapphire and Hardlex crystals have their pros and cons. I would never pass up on a good watch just because it doesn't have a sapphire crystal.
