Why Everyone Loves Seiko Watches

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Check out these NEW IFL Drops (and so many more awesome, customised watches): bit.ly/watchgringa
Why do watch collectors love Seiko so much? Sure we love Rolex, OMEGA, Tudor, Cartier. But nothing quite hits like Seiko. I haven't owned a Seiko until recently - the Seiko 5 GMT and now a new Seiko 5 (yay IFL! Thank you!) but even just from getting these I've become a Seiko lover. There is a certain character to their watches.
There are 5 reasons why I think we love Seiko so much: 5. Their undeniable charm. 4. The Japanese innovative approach to watchmaking and just how different they are from European watchmaking. 3. Heritage - even though we always talk about the value proposition of Seiko, they have heritage similar to Audemars Piguet, Breitling and they are even older than Rolex. 2. They have a broad catalogue - there really is something for everyone. 1. And biggest - they over deliver. What you get for the price; the watch that is delivered for a really reasonable price. £500 / $500 isn't cheap. But you get a lot of watch for that price.
This is why I think everyone loves Seiko so much. Did I miss anything big? Why do you love Seiko? Is Seiko overrated? Let me know in the comments.

I'm wearing a Grand Seiko "Katana", a US-only limited edition. Mine is 287/500. Watching the smooth sweep of the second hand is mesmerizing for sure. The Spring Drive accuracy in phenomenal. As for the bracelet, I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. Yes, there is no micro adjustment, but maybe I got lucky and found the perfect fit after my watchmaker removed the necessary number of links. You could always go with a leather strap if the bracelet isn't to your liking. As a matter of fact, it comes with a strap. The finish on a Grand Seiko is second to none in my opinion.

Japanese love to see their tools/machines worn out and broken from hard use. German and Swiss want you to admire their tools and machines. That’s why Japanese cars run longer. Not because they’re better, they aren’t. But because they’re designed to be used by people who won’t follow instruction manuals perfectly or use their tools/machines in the ideal environment. (Don’t change your oil in your Camery for 30,000kms, it keeps going without issue. Treat your BMW that way and it’s toast first time, every time.

One thing that I think needs to be said is that even though there’s this narrative that Seiko is price gouging, Long Island Watch recently did a video that pretty succinctly showed that Seiko is still putting out good timepieces for a good price. It’s just that the watches are now coming up to RRP and inflation, but even still, Seiko still tries to put a fair price on their new offerings. “We live in a society”, as they say.

I really love the design of Seikos, but I've gotta say that their QC has left a lot to be desired in my experience. I received a SRPE61 for my birthday 2 years ago and noticed that there was a literal hair on the dial. Small, but once I saw it, there was no going back. Thankfully I returned it and received a hair-free model. Yet with the replacement, I realized much too late that the hand winding did not work. Not a big deal when I wore it every day, but now that I have a couple more watches, it's a real hassle. Would love to try another seiko someday, but I have some trust issues now.

Seiko has historically been cherished for its exceptional value for money, a reputation it maintained for many years. Consumers grew accustomed to Seiko's reliability and affordability, as well as that Seiko "feel" distinguishing it from other brands. Unlike some brands that tend to repeat their successful models and focus only on refining existing movements without significant technological advancements (looking at Swiss brands), Seiko has consistently demonstrated innovation and occasional quirkiness. Although Seiko may no longer offer the same unbeatable value for money as it once did, and it has not released an unconventional watch like the TV watch in recent decades, the brand continues to excel in every aspect of horology. From producing affordable quartz movements to advancing high-accuracy quartz technology, Seiko proves itself as master watchmakers, prioritizing horological expertise over mere marketing prowess (looking at Swiss brands again).

My point is that Seiko takes risks and not only innovates but also does some bold, unconventional things from time to time. This approach is quite refreshing and contributes to that unique Seiko feel that so many people love.

Great, welcome to the club! Before I got into watches I just had a Seiko Solar SNE056, purchased in 2012 for $103. In January 2024 I replaced the rechargeable battery and it’s still running great. Now, I have 8 Seiko watches in my 15 watch collection. Five of these are vintage. A Laurel made in 1960 and a pocket watch made in 1971, for example. The vintage watches keep better time than my Presage! I have never paid more than $500 for a watch. Seiko! ❤

Obviously some of the more popular or new Seikos can get expensive, but you definitely get a reliable and accurate watch. Plus I like for some lower on the price end watches that use a their NH35/36 movement, you can just buy another one instead of getting it fixed. I get some of the complaints if you truly have an eye for higher end watches, but for me they’re perfect.

Those overengineered quartz divers like the 7548's and 6458's...and watches with barometers for predicting the weather...namely the first Marinemaster. It's surprisingly accurate, too!

I knew I wanted to add a Seiko to my collection for a while and did a lot of shopping around before I finally purchased my SSK021 GMT, but I was surprised by just how much I enjoyed wearing it, even with my pretty large collection. I still really enjoy that watch and wear it regularly, even though I have much more expensive watches, there is just something about Seikos.

I fall into the “doesn’t love Seiko” camp. I recently bought one, and it’s easily the worst experience I’ve ever had with a watch. I bought an Arnie, and it doesn’t work. Factory resets when exposed to light. Kind of a big deal for a solar watch. Sent it into Seiko to have them fix it (paid shipping on my own dime), and got it back after about a month. I crack it open, take it outside, and it resets again. Apparently it’s an issue endemic to the 2023/24 Arnies. Horrible QC, and bad CS. It’s killed any desire for me to purchase from the brand again into the future. Casio was already getting my money, but now they’ve assured my loyalty.

Well I have 5 Seikos and they’re all perfect 🤷🏼‍♂️ if you want solar buy Casio or Citizen, seiko you buy automatic, don’t waste your time on quartz. Hope you give them another shot.

@@Matt-mh5us I personally think that answer is a cop out. The Arnie is an iconic watch, and one that I wanted to try. As my first Seiko, this experience was so poor that it will certainly be my last Seiko.

People can hate Seiko as much as they want (especially on issues like pricing and QC nowadays), but, no matter what, you'll never go wrong with a Seiko (and same goes with a Casio, Citizen, Orient --the Big 4 of Japanese timepieces). Loved by Muggles and watchnerds alike, especially in Asia. Heck, there are even 'Seiko communities' from where I came from. And there is one video I saw where a Thai guy collecting Seiko Monster only and try to get his hands on every variants 😂. Lovely video as always Britt, big fan from Indonesia. 🎉

living in SE Asia, seiko is defo the epitome of affordable watches. be it wrist watch, wall clock, table clock, seiko is everywhere! growing up, I never pay attention to seiko, like why are they so popular. until a few years ago I started to get interested in wrist watch and wanna buy a real wrist watch for myself. surprisingly, seiko is the first brand I look at 😂 somehow the design is very non nonsense. it's sophisticated, clean and just my vibe?? you can choose anything from their catalogue and you'll find yours. right now I have two seiko wrist watches and adore them both! their antiques line such as exceline and spirit just gorgeous. I'm not sure if they still sell it but somehow I always found in 2nd hand market. but yeah overall they're great ❤

I don’t understand how someone could ask for a recommendation around £500 and then when you give them a great answer they say “aren’t Seiko’s cheap”. It seems like this friend is looking for something with more brand cache, but for most “muggles” that is Rolex and I’m not sure what else.

Seiko produces excellent watches. I particularly admire my Seiko LX titanium spring drive. No Swiss watches can match the smooth sweeping hand of the spring drive movement. I have owned mine for four years, and it still functions flawlessly. Additionally, I appreciate your informative video about Seiko watches.😊

I think the great thing about Seiko is that any bad cheap watch has a superior Seiko someone can upgrade to. For example, a cheap gold watch can be upgraded to a Presage Half and Half or Beer Julep.

I am a one watch person and it is a Seiko Prospex SRPE33K1 Manta Ray and I LOVE it so much. I did a huge amount of thinking about it because my wife received a really good inheritance and she told me to pick out a nice watch. I looked at Rolex, Omega, Blaincpan, etc. and I picked Seiko. I have had it for 4 years and really love this watch and I get a lot of compliments on it. Literally the only watch I would ever need. I know people that have expensive watches and are afraid to wear them so they wear a Casio or something like that. What is the point?

Want to mimic an expensive model but for way less money? Check! Create something entirely unique? Check! Still loving my SPB144 that's just one better than the original!

I’ve owned many Seikos, mainly sla and sje but a few spb. All have over delivered on design, quality and accuracy compared to Swiss alternatives. A lot of the old Seiko fans with negatively don’t understand the difference between a 6l and 6r movement. Also the non cosc standard accuracy tolerances have people up in arms.

The seiko prospex alpinist 1959 is one of the best watches, especially at the price point that I've had. Especially if you can get your hands on the more limited edition dials like the ginzo. That's not even necessary, though. The blue dial is amazing, too.

Although today I'm wearing my Sub, my first watch I purchased with my own money was Seiko 5 back in 1969. Since then I have added few more Seiko's to my collection. They're practically bullet proof although accuracy is suspect at times. One of my favorites is the SKX 007 and probably with worst accuracy. By the way, I still own that very first Seiko 5.
