What blows my mind, is that he literally never sounds the same, he changes his voice or accent in every single movie. Not to mention the fact that in real life he has a rather strong Irish accent, which I can imagine being very hard to shake.

But Id agree he is the finest actor of our time. Really looking forward to Christoph Waltz's next big role too. He's killed it thus far perhaps one of the greatest of the age as well :D Notice the lack of Heath Ledger, may he rest in peace, but he's absent for a reason

Just finished watching Gangs of New York. Holy crap what an amazing performance. Easily one of the best villains in a movie I’ve ever seen. You can see his point of view, as he seems more human than most villains. And when he goes all crazy villain on everyone he really captures the crowd with his unpredictability. Wish he was in more movies so I could see more of his likely would be amazing work, but so comes the cost of method acting. It really takes a toll on a person, as he’s been out of the game for 5 years at one point, and a few years at other points. Truly an amazing actor. So sad to see him retire

Daniel Day-Lewis is probably the definition of "Method Acting"; you can go on forever to talk about what he's done to prepare for his roles: - My Left Foot: Befriended several people with disabilities at Sandymount School Clinic, refused to break character, and demanded to be moved around on the set in his wheelchair and have other people feeding him. (btw, he denied that he had broken those two ribs) - The Last of the Mohicans: went through weight training, spent lots of the time in the forest his character lived, learned how to fish, camp, hunt, make canoes, and skin animals. He also never went anywhere without his rifle. - In the name of the father: kept his Northern Irish accent the whole time, lost weight, spent lots of time in a prison cell, and insisted that the crew would throw cold water at him and verbally abuse him - The boxer: spent three years at learning to box - Gangs of New York: Always spoke with his New York accent, became a butcher apprentice, listened to music by Eminem, and hired circus people to teach him how to handle his butcher knife and throw daggers. He also became sick during production because he refused to wear a warm coat since it was not from the 19th century. - There will be blood: spent one year at researching his role where he learned how to drill for oil. - Lincoln: read over 100 books on Abraham Lincoln, demanded to be referred to as "Mr. President", wrote messages to Sally Field in "Lincoln" style, and refused to let the English cast members speak to him with their own accents. Daniel Day-Lewis is indeed one of the greatest and most acclaimed actors of his generation, but I'm not very sure if I want to be on the same set with him or live with him; I'd prefer to be with someone who can be completely in character on set, and then turn it off when we're not on set

Pretty sure they've learned that not wearing a coat isn't a cause of sickness. You tend to have illnesses spreading more rapidly in the colder seasons because people gather in closer proximity more frequently, causing an increase in sickness occurrences and a false association with keeping warm being necessary to avoid it.

His total on-screen minutes in that film weren't all that many, to be perfectly honest, and what he did in that limited time was nothing short of amazing. He took over the entire film.

Daniel is able to become someone entirely different, absolutely nothing is recognizable to the point that I don't even see him ANYWHERE in these movies! Seriously, where is he? That's how good of an actor he is! Some actors do a role so well that it is all we see them as. Daniel is so good that we don't see him, we see a character only, much to the dismay of his supporting cast because even with a star studded cast he just dominates a movie.

Josef Hautala I agree about Guy Pearce, I sometimes think he is a little overlooked. I still prefer Oldman, for me he is the most versatile actor. Josef Hautala Oldman has amazing range, his comedy and wierd characters are his most loved but he can pull of real or straight characters brilliantly. Got an Oscar nod for Tinker Tailor, also in Prick Up Your Ears he is great. I don't know if Bale is more versatile than Day-Lewis. Bale is amazing in American Psycho & Machinist but Day-Lewis has pulled off some spectacular roles.

I have seen every film he appeared in ,except "Out of the Furnace", and he was fantastic.I was impressed as a film enthusiast. But he still has to pass Hardy ,Firth ,Depp,DiCaprio,Brody (UK ,U.S) ;Min-sik Choi (S.Korea); Ricardo Darin , Gael Garcia Bernal (Latin America) ; Tony Leung (H.K.); Christoph Waltz , Stellan Skarsgård, Sergi López i Ayats , Javier Bardem, Mads Mikkelsen , Daniel Auteuil (Europe) to reach the level of Day-Lewis-Oldman-De Niro-Pacino.And there is a "Rickman-Hopkins-Caine-Lord Larence-Burton-Nakadai-Mastroianni" stage in between , fanboy!

I know that in movies, but Daniel Day-Lewis' performance in There Will Be Blood just makes me believe it's a completely different person. I don't even get a sense that he is an actor in a movie, but that the audience is an ghost in reality watching as his life goes on. Amazingly directed as well.

My favourite performance BTW is Bill the Butcher. Although Leo was an entertaining lead and you have good performances from Brendan Gleason, Jim Broadbent and others, it was Bill the Butcher who really stole the show. I'm surprised he didn't try and go back in time and lead a tough New York gang in preparation for the role!

I love most of his performances, but I especially liked him as Newland Archer. Because I'm so used to seeing him in very physical roles in which he roars and shouts, it was amazing to see how good he can be also in a much more restrained role. Some people accuse him of "chewing the scenery" in all his films, and it's true that sometimes he goes a little over-the-top (though I always love it, to be honest ^^). But his ability to emote in a more quiet performance is also really impressive. The same is true, to a certain extent, of The Last of the Mohicans, which is really a masterpiece in my opinion (in addition to having superb actors, it is so beautifully filmed, perfectly edited, one of the best soundtracks of all time...)

I tell you what, when it comes to the ability to play a range of characters no one does it better than British actors and actresses, and I believe it’s because British stage shows are much better in quality. DDL, Gary Oldman, Ralph Fiennes, Jeremy Irons to name a few and that’s without mentioning Alec Guinness, John Hurt, Peter O Toole, Laurence Olivier, Ian McKellen, Albert Finney the list is endless. The versatility to conquer different accents in screen is unparalleled.

Buffoon1980 I'm glad you think so, and its no slam against Day-Lewis, he is amazing but sometimes plays it safe by only being in one movie every 6 years or so when actors such as the ones I mentioned take many more roles and have much less time to prepare for them. And something about that makes me think they show more skill in some sense.

Michael Colby Quality over quantity. Besides, DDL has almost received more accolades than those you've mentioned combined, he made DiCaprio look like an amateur in "Gangs of New York", he's always the main focus when his movies get reviewed, and his roles are extremely difficult to play well

  • @TrueIronMaidenFan

    @TrueIronMaidenFan

MortyBoy15 accolades don't mean shit, Gary Oldman (whom I forgot to mention in my first comment) has litterally gotten no accolades the same way Guy Pearce hasent. Its because they are character actors in mostly indie movies not because they are not as good as DDL. I agree that quality is better than quantitiy but every actor I listed has given DDL quality performances. DiCaprio-The Aviator, Gilbert Grape, Blood Diamond, The Wolf of Wall Street Guy Pearce-Memento, The Rover, LA Confidential, The Proposition, Lawless Christian Bale-American Psycho, The Fighter, The Machinist, American Hustle Sean Penn-Milk, Mystic River, Dead Man Walking, 21 Grams, I Am Sam Get the picture? Honestly the only amazing performances DDL has given IMO is My Left Foot, Gangs of New York, and There Will be Blood.

DDL in Gangs of NY is one of the greatest acting performances of all time. I am a "Lincoln" scholar and that performance was incredible, but even so, not as good as Gangs. I was a big fan of "The Last of the Mohicans" in the 90s, and never would have imagined this guy would turn into the actor that he has. Truly one of the greatest actors ever. Even though an all-around disappointing movie, I would watch Gangs of NY any time just for DDL's performance. DDL works great in a role of power because his voice is so damn intimidating/commanding. Incredible. "Ears and noses will be the trophies of the day, but NO HAND SHALL TOUCH HIM! NO HAND SHALL TOUCH HIM!!"

Daniel Day-Lewis is my favourite actor of all time. It’s his versatile, synchronizing and combative accents and acting skills that make him so flabbergasting🌟🌟 I envied him when he won the Oscar for MLF. Everyone blessed him, as well as beautiful Jodie Foster who was announcing the nominees. There Will Be Blood is also a movie that I believe all movie lovers should see at least once. People will reflect different on milkshakes after the film. I didn’t get very into Lincoln that much, but I truly found him as AB Lincoln dynamic! His great in lots of the films his involved in, But those three films are his best works IMO❤️

I think his role as Daniel Plainview should come in at #1. He’s one of only a couple TRULY dynamic actors who can play complicated, yet believable characters -the other actor being Jack Nicholson. His role in There Will be Blood makes your question the character’s mood, desires, and intent. He was totally unpredictable and completely captivating!

Few actors commit to a role like DDL. Once he takes on a role he molds himself into the character like no other. Learns everything about them and what they do. Creates a voice, appearance and mannerisms. Typically he tries to not break from character during filming. These are the reasons that we believe in his portrayals of these characters film after film. He is not my favorite actor, but I do not hesitate to call him not just great, but possibly the greatest "actor" of all time.

I'm pretty sure that I'm in the minority when I say this, but it's my opinion that Daniel Day Lewis lays the acting on a little thick in at least most of his work. Of course, that's what defines good drama. I believe his style of acting is best suited for theatre. If you look at some of these dramatic portrayals of his, you can see how people in real life don't talk or act as flamboyantly. My favorite movie of his is "My Left Foot". He did get the cerebral palsy bit down pretty good.
