The Real Reason Daniel Day-Lewis Quit Acting

Ойын-сауық

If there were an actor that truly treats acting as a craft, it has to be Daniel Day-Lewis. Throughout his storied career, he has embodied some of the most memorable characters in cinematic history.
Day-Lewis becomes the character he takes on. We don’t see any traces of the real him in Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York or in Abraham Lincoln in Lincoln. Day-Lewis is a master at transforming into a role through his voice and body.
Sadly, Day-Lewis has announced that The Phantom Thread is going to be his last movie and he will be retiring from the craft of acting. Here is the real reason Daniel Day-Lewis is quitting acting.

I met Daniel at Sundance in 2005. A fried of mine and I had just seen The Ballad of Jack and Rose which screened there. After most of the people had filed out Daniel was standing in the lobby with some guy talking his ear off. He looked like he wanted to get away but was too polite to cut the guy off. I waited for a little while and finally walked over...said Excuse me to the Motor Mouth, reached my hand in, which Daniel took, and I told him, "You are so talented. Please do not stop acting. You bring such joy to all of us who watch you in these fabulous roles. You are wonderful." He got the biggest smile on his face and thanked me so graciously! It's been almost (this month!) 13 years since I gave him that compliment and we've had him for that long... because the rumor was in 2005 that he wanted out! Which is why I took the time to tell him that! I like to think maybe my sincere comment had something to do with him staying! Probably not...but one can hope. :) Daniel...you will be greatly missed.

In those years Hollywood made so much less films. Lewis has to compete with thousands of others. In former times there was less competition. The best actors of the 30's,40's 50's 60's were lousy compared to those today. I grew up in the 50's on those films from then and much earlier. Now when I check out my former favorites on KZread I gasp at how bad the great actors were.

I saw this comment now as u wrote your comment 2 months ago, I would never thought that was the case of actors being lousy back in the day of 30's - 60's compared today actors because back then they didn't have the technology to make movies so they relied on the acting and the plot, I thought it would be the other way around because of today with special effect that take the front stage unless u have a drama movie, I guess the case today u have more tools to work with the art of the craft as back in the day it was a learning process as film was new and young

Daniel Day-Lewis is a wonderfully unique human being who courageously dedicates himself in his work to the truth of his characters and his own being. DDL becomes the person he is portraying.. Some have tried to emulate this style by losing body weight and immersing themselves in the Role , but no one even comes close to the Talent of DDL. he is the best of ALL time ... I can not think of a single person no longer with us other than Brando , who was mentioned ... and as to those still alive ,, Gary Oldman is the only one who deserves 2nd Place ..

And the music (OMG)...that movie could only have been done with Daniel Day-Lewis. I seriously cannot imagine anybody else in that role. I will miss his totally immersive character work, and the outstanding results and achievements he has done for us to watch...and be amazed. At least I have the films on Blue-Ray! @@mosescordovero5959 Have you heard the gospel of Jesus Christ before? God's holy word the Bible teaches us that we have all sinned, we have all done things our God given conscience tells us are wrong, that keep us from experiencing His holiness and goodness in our lives. Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” Sins such as using His name in vain, to use the name of the God who created us and gave us life, without respect or reverence, and worse, often with disrespect, jesting or even hatred. Exodus 20:7 “Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.” God is a just, holy and righteous God and in His love and goodness He must punish sin. If we are living sinful lives, breaking the ten commandments, and not acknowledging God in our hearts, God must punish us for our wickedness. God must send us to hell, a place of torment, weeping and gnashing of teeth, where all unrepentant sinners will go. Since we all have sinned, and fallen short, how can we be saved from this eternal place? Romans 5:8 “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” The good news, the gospel, is that God was born of a virgin, lived a perfect, sinless and holy life, as Jesus of Nazareth, and sacrificed Himself for our sins. He shed His blood and died on the cross and took upon Himself the wrath of the Father so that we might go free. After being crucified, he was buried in a tomb, and then as prophesied, resurrected by the power of God and defeated sin, death and hell. Whosoever believes in Him and follows Him will have eternal life! Forgiven of all sin, saved from death and hell and given a new heart to truly know Him. That is the mercy and love that Christ showed on the cross. He was perfect, yet died for imperfect people like us. Please take the time, you are not promised tomorrow, to read these next verses humbly and honestly and pray for God to forgive you of your sin and grant you His Holy Spirit and forgiveness in Jesus Christ. God bless you in Jesus' mighty name! Amen. Romans 10:9 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 11:25-26 "Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?"

It’s so hard to remember that some celebrities aren’t really *celebrities*, per se. Some people just love their career and their chosen art form, and commit to it fully, but they don’t want the fame that can come with it. Daniel Day-Lewis was an unbelievably talented actor who did what good method actors do; commit themselves to a character fully and without restraint. I don’t blame him for wanting to step back. I obviously don’t know him personally, but he seems like the kind of person who craved a stage but not necessarily an audience, if you know what I mean.

The movies that are coming out today are so bland and have no heart that he doesn't want to act these movies

He didn't quit, he takes long breaks from acting after almost every movie he does, I think because he becomes so enamored with the roles he takes on that at the end of filming he needs a good long time to settle back into himself before some other role comes across his lap that captures his interest. If you look back at his career Daniel Day Lewis has "quit" acting almost 8 times only to return in about a year. He can't stay away, he loves transforming himself but he's also a Hollywood elite who has a markedly different perspective on world issue than most of us normies. You get the sense from interviews that he's a very serious and dramatic man outside of his performances.

I wish more actors took on his philosophy. He manages to transform the movies he works on into works of art instead of just another movie. Robert Downey Jr should take note.

Thanks for posting this, Looper. You put a lot of effort into the research. Day-Lewis is perhaps one of the greatest actors to have ever lived. I think his true fans totally respect his decision - thought I for one selfishly wish he'd do some more :p

I've experienced the same sadness after completing a novella; though I'm certain it's less visceral than method acting. Other writers speak of the sadness too. After living with heart and soul in a story it's heartbreaking when it ends. Not at all, though, with writing music since you can perform the songs again.

His performance in Gangs of New York is the greatest I have ever seen. He stole the show.
