But at what cost? How can you be so upset at the stichpunks dying, yet not care that they bascially ceased to exist just to revitalize the earth? They were not, AT ANY POINT trying to get bacterial organism to get the cycle going. They were just trying to live. There is no message of rebirth in 9! There is no life following thereafter. Because the stichpunks who died didn't get to go into the afterlife. They never got to continue to live, to think, to feel, to watch over those they left behind. They were used to bring back earth, without their knowledge or consent, and if they don't come back by the rain, or even live on as forest spirits (which would be actual rebirth) they will cease to exist. Their souls... splattered all over the clouds to nothing more than lifeless plant life. Plants can't think, can't feel, can't live. Those were 9's friends, his family! He'll mourn them, miss them, and for the rest of his life, it'll just be... a silent world. Not to mention he wasn't even trying to sell their souls off to to die, but to go into the afterlife! He had no knowledge or consent of this either. He'll probably never see them again, not even in the afterlife! If he finds out the truth... he'll be horrified, heartbroken. It just goes to show that this world is not theirs... it never was to begin with. That's not kind or respecftul at all! It's cruel, disrespectful, and manipulative! The lesson that as long as the earth comes back, it doesn't matter how its done, or who gets hurt, killed, or how many lives are ruined. The real kindness and respect that came from 9... was that even in their bleak world and situation, they were still able to find happiness and life in their dead world, in themselves, and in each other. 5 was 9's best friend, his brother, his angel... 2 still loved this dead world in spite of it being... dead and saw the good in it. 3 and 4 too found happiness in books and loved to have fun, 6 was still funloving and easily amused, and all thorughout the film, there's surprisingly cute, happy or heartwarming scenes, and even a few instances, like when the cat beast is killed, or when they think the machine is killed, it shows that it's possible for them to live a happy nomral life in their dead world. That's true life, not lifeless plants, but the ability to think, feel, hate, and love in spite of if. True life is living in a dead world and there beings who live and feel like any other human, not a living world where there are no beings who live and feel at all. When the stichpunks were alive, their world may not have had a body but it still had a soul. When the stitchpunks died, the world gained a body, but lost the soul. There is no dawn in the blackness... only blackness. The stichpunks being alive was their light.

Holy shit, just by what was shown in this video about this movie "The wind blows" almost made me cry. For me is not straight out creepy, but extremely sad. It almost makes me kinda sick.

About that PG rating for “when the wind blows”. This was back when the PG-13 rating had been around for only about 2 years, and you could still get away with some REALLY dark stuff for a PG film. I’m not really sure it that makes the stuff they do show in when the wind blows okay, but I wanted to give you some perspective on how things were back then. Edit: One last thing, this was around the time when the Cold War was still a very serious threat, and there was a possibility we could all be Annihilated with just the push of a button.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for darker material and I think it’s extremely important for younger kids to learn some of the darker elements of life early on so they can learn how to deal with them better and prepare for them. But no matter how dark the premise, how honestly it’s discussed, and how well it’s taught, there are limits. There are some things children should wait a little bit to fully learn about.

Granted I saw it when I was 10 and was already watching stuff like the nightmare before Christmas, coralline, and the corpse bride. scared but mostly amazed by the animation, story and the artistic approach. I don't have the exact words to describe what was a mix or fear, wonder and adrenaline on every cliffhanger, but once I saw 9 I just appreciated it. Still do.

I can't believe I forgot how creepy Felidae and 9 were! Also, what a surprise to see Doug here! Two of my favorite film reviewers in one video?? How amazing is that!? Talking about creepy animation, there's one Mexican short film that scared me as a child: it's called "El Héroe" by Carlos Carrera. It played once in a while in a kid friendly tv channel. It has an unique animation style, each frame was painted with color pencils and it's about a lady that commits suicide in the subway. I remind you, this played on free television, in the kids' channel, during cartoon hours!! How dare they?? I'm watching The Moomin one moment, then ad break starts and suddenly creepy as heck short film! I was fascinated by it though, every time I caught it on I could't stop watching. Man, the art world is filled with all kinds of weird stuff isn't it!

... How disgusting. And hopeless. The ending of 9 is not hopeful; it's beyond horrifying, and just cruel, and downright inhumane. This isn't about life going on; it's about destroying true life to bring back materialistic plants. The rest of the movie beforehand, showed, however, that you don't need plants to live; you need emotions, family, love, and souls. The ending just shattered that completely. And unless the lost five can be reborn as nature spirits, like the kodama from "Princess Mononoke", 9 will have the biggest mistake, and regret, in his life, even worse than putting the talisman in the machine.

That’s true even though it was a Christmas story, A Christmas Carol was the first time I heard about the novel by Charles Dickens and this film really shook to the core and it’s first creepy Christmas film I’ve ever watched, it’s mainly due to The Ghost Of Christmas Yet Come and the fact that I was 7 when it came out. A lot of people think that the animation creepy but I love this style of animation and the director of A Christmas Carol is the director of The Polar Express, my favourite Christmas film

  • @gaycoffeeaddict

    @gaycoffeeaddict

I personally love the film for it's more accurate, creative, unnerving retelling of the original tale. Especially their portrayal of the ghosts- not many people remember that the Ghost of Christmas Present is rapidly aging and dying. Most people just retain the creepiness of the ghost of Christmas Future and make the rest cheery and light. But that's not what the tale was. Also the lighting effects in the movie are really good to me.

Like it literally couldn’t tell if it was real or not because it looked like real people, and I as a child didn’t understand why anyone would choose to animate something realistically, rather than just do it live action. Even my child mind knew that animation often cost more than live action. idk just some random thoughts.

The realistic animation style makes much more sense with CGI characters in (majorly) live action films and video games which want to be live action. Characters such as Thanos, The Incredible Hulk, Gollum, Darkseid, Steppenwolf, and the Na'vi could not be done in live action without looking awkward and cheap. They were going to make Gollum an animatronic but they instead made him motion capture CGI so he could act on a set (making it easier for the live action Frodo and Sam to act) and because Andy Serkis acted very well not just with his voice but with his body language as well. It would also make it easier for a flashback to a pre-One Ring Hobbit Sméagol, who is in live action. Some characters are performed better by puppets than CGI, such as Yoda, but most fantastical humanoid creatures (in live action films) can only be really done with motion capture CGI. If you want to make a motion capture film, it's going to take more effort and money than simply making a CGI film with a cartoony art style or a (mostly) live action film.

Just a small critique: in the future, I think you could make the transitions between your opinions and Doug’s (or whichever guest you have) a lot smoother. It got very monotonous when you kept asking some variation of “So, what are your thoughts on this movie, Critic?” Maybe you two could just go back and forth with your thoughts, no transitions at all? Or give your opinion on one, then have Doug handle the next one? It’s just a suggestion.

So what? The whole idea of the Parental Guidance certificate is for adults to make up their own minds about whether to show it to kids not not. There's a lot of PG films children can potentially watch that aren't necessarily geared towards them. If When the Wind Blows were a live action film would it be rated higher than PG? Probably not. Would it still be a film aimed at children? Probably not. So what difference should it make? Animation is simply a medium, an artistic form. It should not have an age ghetto.

Unfortunately, I remember watching A Christmas Carol as a kid at my friend's house for a sleepover. I think I was 8 I think and grew up getting nightmares from Scooby-Doo (by the time I became 14 I started watching/laughing at horror movies) so imagine a easily scarred kid watching this. I vividly remember my friend falling asleep before Jacob Marley showed up, and when the ghost of Christmas present turned into a skeleton I was balling my eyes out and hyperventilating I was so scared. I actually woke up my friend, her brother upstairs, and her mom on the same floor. I was so scared that it was the first time my friend's mom called my mom to pick me up and take me home (we slept over at each other's house alot) and the worst part to this day my friend doesn't understand why I was so scared🙄, but I guess it's probably because when she was the same age she loved the horror movies I watch now. Anyway, long story short, I was horrified of The Christmas Carol. (And a bunch of the other movies on this list, but I remember The Christmas Carol the most for some reason)

Yeah, Mark Twain’s Adventures is a great claymation movie, but it remains the only movie to be 100% made of clay. Everything from the sets, characters, and even the backgrounds are all made entirely of clay.

Seen Critic talk about this movie individually on his channel just recently? Glad 9 is getting more attention, but you also deserve credit for reminding the world that there's a creepy animated movie that's basically if all mutants in Fallout were replaced with Sid's toys

9 is a masterpiece of animation. My only complaint is how short it is. Christmas Carol is actually my favorite version of the story on film. Interesting fact about Christmas Carol: Did you know there are more versions of Christmas Carol on film than the number of years since the story was first published? That's a LOT of Scrooge!!

*THE HOBBIT. An animated movie from the late 70's. I have no idea why my parents thought it was a good idea to take primary school aged kid that was scared of the dark see it at the drive-in, on a cold and foggy night... It scares the hell out of me to this day, especially the GOLLUM character!* 😱

Imo, everything Ralph Bakshi makes is creepy as fuck. xD I hated it too....honestly, the 1970s was a REALLY wtf time for animation....with that Raggedy Ann movie, these Bakshi films...and....wtf-est of all; FRITZ THE CAT.

I liked the Jim Carrey christmas carol. Something you have to realize is, in the 1800's, that was what passed for scary. Ghosts were meant to be frightening. The animation they used, to make it darker and scarier evokes the atmosphere intended for the book. The book wasn't meant to spread an enjoyment of christmas; it was meant to terrify rich greedy bastards into being better to the poor.
