But he is correct, I am also a board game addict and when he talked about his experiences with Sleeping Gods and Gloomheaven I literally had chills, I might have been saying it myself... the board game in order to be good needs to do the following, flow fast with little player downtime, so others don't fall asleep waiting for their turn, use same logic throughout with rules easy to follow and understand, any scoring and calculation needs to be straight forward so we don't feel as if at work rather than having fun ... calculating 5 min a battle outcome is outrageous and exostinng!!! otherwise, it should have been a computer game ... I think he was spot-on! no many people are brave to speak their min I respect it!

The problem was that the actions of those cards didn't fit the theme. There wasn't a reason to include soldiers in a wine making game. I don't even think that the benefits of the cards were changed when the name and picture were. Now if the game was about conquering others like Blood Rage. Sure, it makes sense and is expected.

Excellent ! I just dug out my copy of Sleeping Gods and reset it as I’ve not played it since starting the quests . I managed 12 before putting it on the shelf and completely forgetting about it . Time to move it on. And Gloomhaven , spot on. My copy is sat there with all the contents in nicely constructed wooden compartments with only 10 quests completed…it’s a bore fest . And the Jaws of the lion is just as dull. You think I’d have learned ….

I totally agree with what you said about Heroquest, when it first came out in 1989 I played it with a small group of people who didn't play board games, nor RPG's, there wasn't a massive choice of fantasy board games back then but because it was so simple and easy, everyone really enjoyed it. I had a big break from board games and then had kids (the wife helped with this obviously), and when I see this being crowdfunded, I thought that even though it is a simple game my kids would love it, its not going to melt their little brains, they really enjoyed it as well. Heroquest is just one of the games you can pull out and play and enjoy with people who don't want to play your copy of DUN or League of Dungeoneer's, because they aren't interested in that much depth in a game, so it has its place I suppose. Nemesis, we haven't been in the position where people die early in the game, but we have been in a position where most or all people died at the end, and even when you survive something just seems flat about the way the game ends, but its fun in between. Some people say play aftermath at the end, but by the time we finish Nemesis I have had enough. Sleeping gods, I pull the rule book out and I just don't know why, but I can't get beyond learning the rules, one day I will play it.....or not. distant skies looks a better game though and I will play that at some point. War of the rings is a hard one, I have actually bought it and then sold it, never having played it at all, and then when the sales came round a year later, bought it again, this time I will give it a go at some point, and your right I know boredom will set in at some point and its going to be a long, long game, which is the reason I never played it the first time round, I am actually waiting for a game table to turn up so I can play games like this and Mirza Noctis and leave it set up when I get fed up for another session.

  • @VaultBoy13

We have a house rule that if it's early enough in the game, the player just takes another character. Basically, it's the hibernation pod that opened late rule. And, if someone has "X player cannot survive" objective, then that player # counts as dead. I do which that later versions of Nemesis had taken a look at Lifeform as inspiration for a way to keep players in the game despite their character dying. If death allowed a player to take over as the ship's computer or the ship's cat, and then within that framework they were given a new objective (specific to that role) that would be really interesting. Imagine Jonesy with an objective to get a player killed by an alien, and he has a way to lead aliens with his cards. Or imagine the ship going into a crew preservation mode that allowed it to manipulate doors, use the airlock, and maybe even check systems (engines, navigation) and share that information with a single player. I love the game, but sometimes I think Awaken Realms simply stop at "good enough" with their designs.

While I absolutely LOVE Gloomhaven my self, I can absolutely see where you are coming from and why it may not be a game for everyone. :) You are the first person I've heard expressing negative opinions on Sleeping Gods. When you first dropped the name of the game you really got my attention and I thought - This will be interesting. - as I have the game, haven't gotten it to the table yet, but after having played through the tutorial my self I have some trepidations as to how repayable the game actually is. What I found interesting is that your criticisms had nothing to do with that :). At some point I'll play it and then I shall see if you were right. Thanks for another entertaining video that refreshingly doesn't sing the game designers' praises. :)

I made Sleeping Gods tolerable by ignoring the daily encounters that invariably led to cascading failure, so I could focus on exploration (the reason I was playing the game in the first place) and actually stand a chance during battles (which I generally enjoyed, now that they were winnable). It still suffered from the same failing all narrative campaign games suffer from - it would be better as a video game - but at least it was playable.

Love this video! To be fair love all of yours. I just want to post them on board game chat/ trade group, just to trigger the regularly offended clan. Keep them coming and don’t change.

It's funny, because the things you didn't like about Rebellion are pretty much why I love it! But I also acknowledge that's not for everyone. It's so dang stressful to play as either side but for completely different reasons, and that tension sticks with you the whole game. It's also interesting that you found the Empire to be the stronger faction (saying invariably they do end up finding the Rebels), because in my own playing so far, I've found in my own plays that the Empire can do some *way* overpowered stuff (I once turned Luke into a Jedi and then the Empire immediately invaded, captured, and converted Jedi Luke on the same turn, and it was one of the worst gut punches I've ever felt) but the game will still favor the Rebels thanks to those objectives knocking down the turn timer (a couple turns later I sent a decoy mission to distract Dark Jedi Luke, and then pulled a bunch of daring moves all at once and knocked the turn timer down like 4-5 spaces and set myself up for a timely base evacuation). That tension of overpowered force that you still have a chance to fight back against feels so extremely appropriate and fun.

This was great, but in future videos could you kindly lecture the audience about how we should all feel guilty for existing? Like if you are going to talk about semis, could you bring awareness to erectile dysfunction, and how they are caused by the patriarchy and colonisers or whoever the oppressor of the month is? If you are unsure how just watch any of the other major English/Lithuanian board game channels. Cheers.
