    When you've been in the hobby for a while you kind of get used to seeing the same couple titles get mentioned by every reviewer. I've always admired how Jon stays true to his own tastes rather than simply chasing the hotness and gives some love to some underrated and less-talked-about titles. One of my most trusted reviewers in the business tbh

    That’s one thing I like about playing games with a group that are all older than me is we get to experience games that maybe have gone out of print or never made it to the US in the first place. As well as some more modern titles

    But a lot of times those games are popular because they’re very good games. Like Honda Accords and Toyota Camrys (if you live in USA) you see a ton of them because they are great cars. I will admit that Terraforming Mars is a textbook version of influencers latching onto an average game making it popular.

  • @blarneystone38

    @blarneystone38

    @@littleceasar9351 It wasn't my intention to suggest those games were bad; I was more trying to say that many reviewers tend to cater toward the kind of games that make the BGG top 100, which I would broadly classify as 1) mid-to-heavyweight Euros with little player interaction and 2) campaign dungeoncrawlers. The games they cover are great for people who enjoy that style of game. What I appreciate about Jon's collection is that he's clearly very aware of what kind of game he likes and doesn't shy away from it even when it isn't the "norm." He's clearly much more of a social gamer and likes a lot of party games and games that are simpler rules-wise than your typical BGG darling. Like, other than GOT, I'm not sure he has any games here that are more than a 3 on BGG's weight scale. So yeah, not trying to talk badly about games that are popular, more trying to say I appreciate that he highlights different styles than you normally come across!

    The thing I love about party games is that even people who have bad experiences with boardgames, want to give it a go sometimes. We played herd mentality with my side of the family and after a few rounds my dad shouted: "I'm actually good at this game!" Which was so fun :) (the reason he was good at it is because he is so predictable we started writing down the answer we thought he would write just to get a point 😂)

    The only names for the shelf I could come up with were unfortunately based on other games. When monopoly turns to murder (parody of when missing turns to murder) Murder on the colt express (parody of murder on the orient express) I also love how genuinely irate you get about the couples therapy shelf. You've genuinely never been more relatable. This is my new favourite video. Edit: I thought I was done, but now I'm going to get soppy. Genuinely I want to thank you. It seems obscene but you are responsible for my newfound enjoyment of the hobby. The full list of games I got on your recommendation is long, but I'll give it anyway. Chinatown Carcassonne Hunters and Gatherers Cascadia Mysterium High Society Parks Patchwork Air Land and Sea (the animals version) Fungi (my favourite game) Vaalbara Qwinto 6 Nimmt Sea salt and paper (I might have to take back what I said about fungi. No wait, I won't. Oh screw it, they're joint first.) All in all, I have more games in my collection on your recommendation than otherwise, and so genuinely, thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for opening my eyes to this world. As silly as it sounds, games are important to me and you are the reason I know about them. Also the wallet is a little lighter so screw you at the same time. 🤣

    My friends host a weekly dinner + game night and we never hit a heavy board game, maybe Wingspan, 7 Wonders, or Castles of Mad King Ludwig if we are feeling ambitious. Usually we do party games! I personally play Netrunner and Frosthaven monthly with other friends, but I’ve come to appreciate a perfect shelf of party games like you have

    Let's all pour one out for every board game that gets a horrific redesign. Looking at your copy of Catch the Moon reminded me that I really want to buy it, but when that lovely box art exists I don't want the current version with its crude design, infantile font and heinously huge publisher logo. Did just manage to snag a sealed Z-Man copy of No Thanks off of eBay on the back of this though, so I'll take what I can!

    I actually prefer to store my games horizontally in compartments in a cube organizer. I find the contents of each game box stays much neater that way. Its kinda funny, your vertical boxes actually bugged me slightly this whole video, 😄 but if that's your preference, that's your preference. Every gamer's different, and that is ok. Good content as always!

    Hey John, long time watcher and love all of your videos and content. When you get a moment, a few quick questions on similar games, given my limited budget: - I see you own both Decrypto and Phantom Ink. I only own Decrypto, is Phantom Ink different enough from Decrypto to warrant a purchase? They seem very similar. - Same question on Coloretto and Triqueta. They look like almost exactly the same game (I already own Zooloretto and Coloretto). - Last is Pyramid of Penqueen and Nuns on the Run. All of these games seem very similar to each other based on what I’ve seen, but I’m interested in all of them or own some of them already (and love them). Is it worth tracking down the ones I don’t own that seem so similar?

Also, if I play with my wife + a new person, I'll always have an advantage because I know what my wife will answer and the new person won't.
