More people need to watch golden kamuy - such a banger.

yesssss I was so happy to see Golden Kamuy come up in this list!! god, it's so hard to recommend too, because I think the best selling point of the show is its sense of organized chaos. like, up top, I think the humor in the show is something really unique because like... when a series is labeled as seinin, and has more of a mature content filter on it, especially for violence, most people tend to think that'd make things more dour or severe in tone... but that is not generally the case with Golden Kamuy? I've never really seen a series leverage its violent content into quite this kind of slapstick humor in the way Golden Kamuy does. and because that all gets sprinkled liberally throughout the machinations of the plot, you can get some absolutely wild episodes, which both move the story and are massively entertaining. sometimes the plot is just this big messed up whirlwind of people from different parts of the story, and it can lead to some really out-of-left-field developments. but honestly, this weird tone fits the story perfectly. almost all of the characters of main importance are war veterans... we see the level of violence they're used to. but they're also the kind of adults who left behind a lot of themselves when they served in the war, so there's a kind of juvenile sense of playfulness to a lot of the characters because they haven't been able to express these lighthearted sides of themselves for a long time now, and are in the process of rediscovering their humanity in this way. even the goofiness of the show has a natural reason to be there. I love that the lighthearted elements fit within the context of everything. Sugimoto and Asirpa are having fun, sure... but based on both of their pasts, that actually means a lot. it's significant that they're able to have fun, that they can trust each other, that they eat good food together. it's meaningful, but the show also gets to act, like, next level crazy a lot of the time. and for as much as their roster of allies shifts, I think the story is aware of exactly who to pull into the mix and when, in order to make it satisfying. you never feel like you would've preferred it if things stayed the way they were... each reshuffling of allegiances manages to make sense and give you answers you were actually hoping for. and any time an interesting character dynamic is temporarily broken up, the show leaves you with some new fun and interesting dynamic to tide you over anyway. basically, I trust the show to know why it's good, and keep maintaining that about itself, even as the plot moves along.
I honestly think you're one of the best person to talk about anime. Love people who went out of their way to watch and look for a variety of stuff, because in my opinion that really is the strongest point of anime and manga in general, it is the most varied visual storytelling medium to exists currently. There's joy in simple heartwarming stories, there's joy in the laughs from a really good comedy series, and there's deep stories reflecting humanity itself.

Completely agree, I was blown away when I finished it, it's the kind of ambitious storytelling that feels like lightning in a bottle, especially in the current landscape of storytelling.
Great video. You reminded me I need to watch Idolmaster. It was your original video that sold me on the show.
Finally someone talking about just how good Dragon Maid S was. Everywhere I look - especially around Twitter - all I see is people focusing on the less good parts of the series, and completely ignoring the extremely good parts. Yes, the series has issues and things that it could definitely live without, but it also has one of the most solid SoL stories I've ever seen. It is heartwarming, it is funny, and when it needs to be serious, it hits just the right spots for that purpose.

Huh…yeah, usually when someone puts a list like this out, it is just contained to the year it came out…but hey, I’ve done that before where I’ve seen an absolute masterpiece years after it was released. As for the anime that I’ve seen that you had on here, I have some thoughts… Hanasaku Iroha - Man, this show is probably in my top 20 anime of all-time. However, part of the reason has to do with personal reasons because my first job was working for a hotel and I found my first serious girlfriend working at that hotel. The show reminded me so much of when I used to work at that hotel that Hanasaku Iroha almost connected with me on a spiritual level. I’ll agree that it’s not a perfect show by any means, but I still found it to be an unforgettable watch. Vinland Saga - To be perfectly honest with you, I understand where you’re coming from in your analysis of Vinland Saga. I actually had a hard time getting into it at first as well because I’m also a character-driven viewer more so than a plot-driven, but man, the show just continued to grow on me as it progressed. I think when Thorkell was introduced was when I started falling in love with the show. Dragon Maid S - To be perfectly frank, I didn’t enjoy Dragon Maid S as much as I hoped to. It was still pretty good, but for some reason, I just didn’t enjoy it as much as the first season. It definitely wasn’t because of Illulu because I actually thought she was the best part of the show and I did really like getting to see Tohru’s backstory. It’s really weird because I’m struggling to find the reasons why I didn’t enjoy it as much as the first season, but I just didn’t. Again, I’m not saying the anime is bad or I hated it. I just simply didn’t enjoy it as much as the first season, that’s all. However, I will also add that I am happy to see Kyoto Animation putting out shows and movies again. That tragic arson attack a few years ago hurt me so much because Kyoto Ani is my favorite anime company and I was so saddened that people who worked on some of my favorite anime died senselessly to some evil, vengeful asshat who deserves to burn in hell for all eternity. FMP Fumoffu - Oh, good lord, this anime. I’m glad someone is highlighting it because it is easily one of the three funniest anime I’ve ever seen and I think the rugby episode might be the funniest episode of anime I’ve ever watched. It’s especially funny if you watch it after The Second Raid because that season was so hard-hitting and dramatic while the juxtaposition of Fumoffu sets it off nicely.
@PhenomSage

Hanasaku is definitely a series that I can see being deeply resonant if you've been in that industry of work, Okada writes really relatable stories that hit hard if you've been given the right circumstances. Even for me as someone who's never worked in that field, I found it deeply relatable even just on a character writing level. I actually get where you're coming from with Dragon Maid S, I also would say I enjoyed the first season more, I think because it wasn't as bogged down with overarching plot narrative stuff compared to S2, but it's definitely one of those things where it's hard to pinpoint what exactly about it doesn't work quite as well as season 1. Still a great time though. Also hell yeah! Fumoffu is so good, the last episode with the deadly toxin in the classroom is definitely my favorite episode, one of the funniest eps of anime I've seen.
@Toucanbird

@@PhenomSage The toxin episode was really good and so was the episode where Sousuke was “trying” to learn judo. I think I just loved the episode because seeing Sousuke act like a drill sergeant was just the funniest thing to me.

@@PhenomSage Gridman has a stronger narrative and a much better villain, but the main cast of characters in Dynazenon are much better written and the interactions are much stronger. You’ll probably like it anyways because both series still have the same strengths (excellent dialogue, shot composition, cinematography, and directing) so it’ll come down to if you like plot or characters more. OG Idolmaster is fantastic. I remember every character from it, but I don't remember anything from Cinderella Girls. OG blew my expectations away regarding idol series, then CG surprised me by just how much it disappointed me. Ben-To doesn't get nearly enough love. The premise is ridiculous, but it was sooooooooo much better than it had any right to be and I absolutely love it. Chopstick wedding dress fight might be my favorite fight of all time. Someone on that team has worn a dress before and seriously contributed to that choreography.
@PhenomSage

A lot of people feel that way about CG. I went in with those expectations and actually wound up really enjoying it, it's definitely not even close to 2011 but there are a lot of great stories in there, even if the start of the series is pretty rough and poorly executed. Also haha yeah Ben-To is wild with the choreography and fight concepts in general, I never knew someone could get so creative with convenience store brawls.

wtf?????? Mushoku tensei is only top 3?
You know why I hated Arcane? Because it's too competent. I don't mean it as a positive. It is the epitome for me of mass-produced bingeable schlock that keeps you watching, because the 7/10 and 8/10 plotlines, slick worldbuilding, and cliffhangers are objectively dopaminergic, but afterwards, you just feel empty. Not that transcendental feeling of "empty" you get from series you consider masterpieces, no, I mean the empty you get when you realize you just spent _n_ hours looking at a screen with colourful pixels rearranging themselves 30ish times a second. You just spent hours following a collage of tropes and story beats you have already seen so many times. What is even life? Don't worry, I realize pop media does not need to have some value in answering the "meaning of life" (as if pop media is something one *has* to consume in the first place). I do not get such feelings over *any* media, just that those to me seem particularly soulless while being very competent at the craft.
@PhenomSage

While I don't agree with the sentiment, I do understand the perspective of something that kind of clinically does everything right without having its own soul that elevates its competence. I think Arcane does have a soul but I would also say other things I experienced this year had stronger ones, even if you looked at it on an objective level that Arcane doesn't really have as many glaring issues.
