So. I was VERY VERY pleased with the entry on Grell, who is my favorite Black Butler character right at the moment. And I utterly appreciate the entries where you used “they.” All in all, pretty great video; I honestly only have one minor complaint and that’s the absence of Hange from Attack on Titan. Their gender is also not stated as far as I can remember. Please keep making more videos! I love this channel!

Excluding who, English has eight sets of standard pronouns; I, Thou, It, She, He, We, You, They (which change based on Case.) The grammatical third person singular is gendered, but not other pronouns in English. Japanese, does not employ case in the pronouns, and plural is not inherent either There are also way more than eight pronouns in Japanese. Ware, washi, Watashi, sessha, Boku, ore, Uchi, atashi, watakushi, otaku, are *some* ways to say the first person singular in English, aka " I". Some of those *hint* at gender, but it's not explicit. There is "masculine" and "feminine" speech in Japanese, but to some degree and depending upon the circumstance everyone uses a mix or both, for the most part. Unlike English, these pronouns don't explicitly present a person's gender identity, these would be more in line with the idea of gender expression than gender identity. That said, e.g. atashi is almost always used by women as it's very effeminate, and e.g. ore is almost always used by men as it's very rough speech. But, for example Crona, doesn't use either. Crona doesn’t have an identified gender. The English dub VAs have Crona male pronouns because they thought saying “it” was a little not right. Why they didn’t use they/them is beyond me but maybe the times just weren’t there yet back in 2008. At least in America I could see that being the case.

Emma Collins yea, my brother and I were watching Black Butler, and Grell turned up. We like talking about animes after we've watched them, but we couldn't decide wether to call Grell 'he' or 'she', so we decided on 'they' or 'it'. 😝

Gabriella Holguin Not sure guess it doesn't fit he definition of androgynous good enough cause he identified as a guy? I don't really know but I was very confused about his gender at the start

He kinda does, the list did have characters who looked liked one gender but are actually another so yeah Nagisa's a boy but his appearance had even his class confused until they went swimming. No wonder people get confused especially when he has long hair and was forced to crossdress a few times

man, this list could go on and on. Zoicite (in the american dub of Sailor Moon,) multiple characters in Fruits Basket, Hanji from Attack on Titan, Nathan/Fire Emblem and Dragon Kid from Tiger and Bunny... You showed the character from Persona 4, but didn't delve into their story... and OH. UTENA! Still, this was a pretty rad list of characters, and reminded me of a few that I'd seen ages ago, but forgotten about, like Schrodinger, and HAKU. Omg. That storyline made me cry.

I think that Squid Girl anime had a good honorable mention.

Nagisa with no appearance. Well, you win some, you lose some. I would've at least mentioned him because his Japanese voice actor makes him sound like a girl (while the dub does a better job at giving him a boy's voice), not to mention his more feminine features (like his facial structure, body type, etc) and his hair (which is still sad...).

Unfortunately, people think hating dubs makes them hardcore so we are outnumbered by masses of hipster childern. I watch sub and dub equally and never understood these dumb internet sub vs dub pussy wars.

Speed Dart​ "I don't like dub because it doesn't sound as good" very average hipster opinion. Dubs sound amazing today, ever seen baccano? Imagine watching a show in 1930's new york with the mafia, gangs, news paper companies, etc speaking japanese? Sounded fucking stupid. The dub immersed you way more than the original, especially with the varying accents. I'd be more open minded if I were you, you may be surprised from time to time. Unfortunately, people these days are very close minded and stubborn, usually only watching dub or sub exclusively without giving the other a fair shot.

Honestly, I'd appreciate dubs more if they'd have subtitles on them. I know they're in English and everything, but I'm HOH- hard of hearing- and can't hear/understand the characters without subtitles. At least with subs, I don't have to blast my headphones just hear the characters.

Well, me too :) And it´s not just because original is better. English is not my native language. Japanese is not either. So, when i choose, i choose dub that sounds better to me. And it´s always been and always will be Japanese. (btw i don´t like dub in my native language - czech - neither.) sorry for my English, i understant pretty well, but my writing is... well... you see it :)

HAKU. Always love his character the their villaneous pair. One of my favorites from Naruto and their deaths made me cry.

So many good options to add. This list could not be taken seriously without the gender known as Hideyoshi. #2 and #8 are the only ones I could see them changing, little real controversy, which put Chihiro on this list. Naoto from Persona 4 or any villain from Sailor Moon might win out over Nagisa, unfortunately.

KINO IS ON THE LIST THANK YOU SO MUCH. That anime is SO underloved in America it's crazy. Yet in Japan, it's had multiple games made about it, started as a light novel, and even has had multiple OVAs made for it. It's such a shame, because it really touches on a lot of interesting ideas to think about. Pretty sure I'm the only one here for Kino.

Ash and Angela are like 2 personalities in one body, Ash is male, Angela is female. Sort of like Multi personality Disorder, they can be a different gender from you.
