Anime backstories be like: My parents died before I was born. The doctors had to pull me out of my mother's corpse to give birth to me. They then did experiments on 1-year-old me before abandoning me on a demon village. I lived and found friends before humans attacked the village and I cried cuz they died and now I'm the cold blooded main antagonist cuz the protagonist's father had something to do with my parents' death.

Raven Hero45 Ciel needs to be in several of these. Like anime plot twist, he was supposed grab on to Bassy and survive, but he drowned himself. He needs to be in tragic death, cause he gets eaten...or soul taken by Bassy. Where the hell is Kakashi hatake in this one?! He lost his father who died of suicide, he lost his bestfriend who gave him his eye, he killed his lover, he lost his sensei and also almost lost his student. Not only that, his bestfriend was one of the villians in NS, he also started the war. Wanna know why? Because Kakashi killed the girl that his bestfriend loved, because Kakashi couldn't protect her. BOOM_Girl_ 123 he managed to live a better life than many because he handled it much better. The most important is how the trauma will affect the person. Even if someone has a "better" past, they can have a much worse life; this is why people absorb and deal with things differently, and one can spend the rest of his life hurting himself, even with a "easier" past, and another, who dealt better with his trauma, even if it was worse , he may be able to build a much better life.

itachi has the darkest one av all. He was forced to kill his mother his father his lover his hole family exept he cudent kill his little brother sasuke. He protected his village while everyone in ther hated him. He protected sasuke when sasuke hated him and tryd to kill him. Not to metion he’s best friend that he saw as a big brother died in front of his eyes everyone just like everyone did. And they say gaara’s past was tragic. No one should underestemate the level of guilt and grief he had but not once did he hate the very village that forced him to kill his family he loved them even tho tjey hated him. He protected them from the worlds biggest treat. He joined the the worlds biggest threat the akutski and told them not to tuch his village. He is the most noble man in all of anime.

I think Levi has a more tragic backstory than Mikasa. Sure she was kidnaped but Levi grew up on the streets, was raised by a maniac, watch his two friends die in front of him, and then had to watch MORE of his friends die later on. If thats not tragic, i don't know what is.

Ciel did have the tragic death of both of his parents but all in all he did have a good childhood. Sebastian and the rest of his servants take very good care of Ciel and provide him for his physical, mental, and educational needs. I haven't seen the second season of Black Butler so I can't speak for Alois.

People need to talk about Gintoki more. His backstory wasn't revealed until episode 300+ but we still love him anyway and when we know his tragic backstory, the reason he did anything before episode 300 become so much clear. This is one of the uniqueness of Gintoki, while most of the characters use their backstory as a foundation for their character in the beginning of the show so the viewers will like them more. We didn't have that with Gintoki, we have bits of it but we never know the real story until that one moment, but we still grow to love him. So when the tragic backstory is revealed, there were so many emotions. Also it's not only Gintoki's backstory, there's also Takasugi's backstory in that moment so it doubles the pain. *spoilers* I'm bored and I miss Gintama, so I'm going to write Gin-san's past. Being a Corpse Eating Demon when he's still a little kid, holding a sword taller than his body, living by himself surrounded by wars until his sensei found him. He teaches him how to use a human sword, the way to live, and more. Until one day, his sensei is taken away from him, making him promise to "Please take care of your friends" while his friend made him promise to "Please take care of sensei". He fought and fought for both of them until both were caught and he got the choice to either kill one of them or die all together. He was given two choices, to save his sensei or to save his friends. He wanted to save both, but saving both is the same as throwing both away. Then he cut his own sensei, father-figure, by himself. Wondering around aimlessly, he found a little girl and decided to use his life in exchange of her life. But the girl made him do another promise, "Please don't die before I become the best executioner, so I could cut your head for you". And so he has to live again. Wondering again, he arrived at the graveyard, hungry. Then an old lady, visiting her husband's grave found him. He's so hungry, he ate the offering the old lady gave to her husband. But this time he's the one who made the promise, "Your wife isn't going to live for long, so until that time, I'm going to protect her." Again, although he finally found a place to live. He's still wondering around aimlessly. He doesn't have anything to do, so he decided to do anything and open an Odd Jobs. One by one people came to him and by the time he noticed, he found another burden on his back, he found another family, another reason to live. So after watching Gintama until the end, I finally realize that Gintama storyline is about a war veteran who lost his will to live, slowly finding more and more reason to live.

Jessica A Yes! Ciel and Alois both have very tragic pasts but I kind of think Eren's is the worst. His mother and several of his friends were murdered, he and Mikasa were almost killed/raped/kidnapped and he was forced to murder them along with Mikasa, he's almost died multiple times, and he was injected with the serum that made him become a titan, and nobody ever saw him in the same way because they believe he was a monster, Levi even beat Eren senseless.

My personal three. Levi Ackerman: Mom died, dad missing, raised by murderer uncle, then his only two friends died horrible deaths. Crona: Mom was abusive and used him as an experiment for her black blood, and kind of taught him to isolate himself, be violent, and emotionally weak. Juuzou Suzuya: Was kidnapped by a ghoul to be a scrapper, was tortured(Including getting his balls hammered off the look more girl-like), and forced to kill people, leaving him emotionally damaged. Later, his only friend and adult figure in his life was killed.

I already knew Lucy and Guts were going to be on this list. I also believe Alucard (even though his past was shown for only a brief couple of mins) and some characters from Higurashi should be on here too.If we really want to dig even deeper than Midori from shojo Tsubaki life is more tragic than any other character possibly on this list.May not be an anime series but its an anime movie from the 80s.I mean within the first few mins in, Midori comes back home (most likely they were poor) to her sick mother but to only find out she was dead and rats were eating her from the inside of her vagina.It doesn't get any better within the movie either when she finds herself with no where to go but to live with a buch of carnies.

One Piece is full of tragic backstories... It seems like every character in the series would be a good main character.

honestly sasuke had it easy compared to itachi or kakashi or even gaara. he had a pretty decent family(dads a bit strict but not so bad) , saw them all killed, yet every1 in the village liked him cuz he was talented(except he rly wasnt since kakashi and itachi both graduated half his age LOL). he had ppl supporting him yet he chose to reject them thats his own issue.

You should have put Racheal Gardener in this list from Angels of Death! Her life was very messed up! Her dad abused her and her mom until he killed her mom, then tried to kill Rachel but she killed h8m firs. Then saved their corpse and sewed it together so they can be “The Perfect Family”. Then was turned into one of the floor masters (or whatever) and she was only 14 (I think. I’m 13 rn)

For Elfen lied, you also forgot the part where she met a friend and police caught her with her and the girl pushed Lucy and got shot afterwards. She was very sad about that and also agreed to go with the scientist so they can save the little girl who got shot.

I think Ciel Phantomhive should be included here. When he was younger, on his birthday, his parents died in flame and he was sold to some kind of cult to be tortured, assaulted and even marked him. Also, if you read the manga, /spoiler/ he was only a spare part for his twin brother and he summoned demon through his twin brother's life sacrifice. I even doubt he was named properly as he was described as a spare all the time. Later in the anime he saw his parents are dissected and sewn together.

Abdul Asserti Ok but what about Gray? I'm honestly really angry because he had the worst past out of anyone. He saw his parents being brutally murdered in front of him by a psychotic demon from the book of Zeref amd lived alone in the ice land for quite some time, until he began to train with a motherly-like figure who was also his master (Ur), who then sacrificed herself for him, and he was forced to live everyday in pain because he had to keep the sacrifice to himself and not tell Lyon. He then meets the daughter of Ur, to which didn't get off at a great start byt they turned out to be great friends, but as everything goes on, she sacrifices herself for him too, which puts a great toll on him. With all the people that died for him he doesn't want to throw his life away, which means he's constantly paranoid of what's next and if everyone who died for him would by angry if he died of something stupid like drowning. I honestly think Gray has it the worst.

Seb_Your_Emo_Child Watch mojo is honestly terrible :/ I think guts is the only one (as well as that one piece character) who truly deserved to be on this list as they're the one who have suffered the worst. Not that any of these characters didn't suffer, but there are so many characters who had to deal with rape, abuse, and torture in their childhood and even longer, but they're not on the list. Instead its just a couple characters who feel bad. :/

Then she thought "I'll give 'em the biggest vase we have It has to be valuable because it's so heavy" Unfortunately when she was going downstairs, she fell down because the vase was heavy. She started bleeding. The police came 30 minutes later. She was the only one still alive. She lost everything she had in just 30 minute. That's just too unfair.

Itachi childhood is much more sadder then gaara.itachi had to kill his lover he had to kill his mother and father he saw his best friend kill himself he also saw his entire team get slaughtered and he had to kill his entire clan. That’s only his childhood.

Hidden Shinobi itachi had a choice to not do the coup d’etat. Whereas gaara didn’t choose to kill his mother he didn’t choose to be a jinchuriki he didn’t choose to be hated by everyone in the village even his own father. He didn’t choose to kill his mothers sibling

Like if you thought Ciel phantomhive should have been on this list. In case your wondering, and don't know who Ciel is, I'll explain his backstory. Ciel was really happy with a good life when he was a young child, like six or seven, when someone burned down his house and both his parents burned in the fire. Then, after an asma attack, was captured by a cult who tortured him mentally and physically for a while, even kept him in a cage, until he sold his soul to a demon so he could be saved. For the rest of his life, he never smiled or laughed, and devoted his entire life to finding and destroying the cult that captured him. He killed every single person that was envolved with the murder of his parents and shows no mercy. Oh he also watched his fiancé turn into A mindless doll and his aunt was murdered with a chainsaw, in front of him. Might I remind you, through out the show, he's only thirteen years old. Even if you haven't seen the show, like if you find the backstory tragic. Other kuroshisuji, or black butler fans, back me up and confirm this is his backstory

i'm not even a black butler fan but i'm not gonna lie, i'm a little surprised that ciel didn't make even an honorable mention. that whole demonic sacrifice + losing your whole family thing was probably a little more than traumatizing
