Great reaction ... I lovingly call the odd time signatures that make their music soooo engrossing(and I know its cheezy)... Tool Time. Its also why Tool is either loved immensely or they hate it(aka people who suck... lol). Glad you like them

Invincible is the mother of all slow burners. It's so complex that on first listen it's just kinda weird. On like 3rd listen you start remembering all the beats a little. Once you become familiar with it it's really wild because it's hypnotic to get lost in the complexity.

To me Tool and Zeppelin are similar in that they are mislabeled. You have fans of both bands that like rock and heavy metal but neither Tool or Zeppelin are really rock or heavy metal. The difference between Zeppelin and Tool and other bands is they both move you with rhythm that seem to only be felt by their core fans. But their songs are still accessible to those who like rock, hard rock and heavy metal. So they get a wide fan base because the music has hooks and sounds good in general... but a smaller group of fans feel the music differently. Doesn't hurt to have great drummers. Anyway, I have family members who try to get me to go see Metallica with them and others play White Snake for me... They hear the same music whereas I hear similar sounding music that lacks whatever the magic that Zeppelin and Tool have. You either feel it or you don't. And the same goes for other bands as well. People love Metallica and White Snake but I think they hear something different than I do.

Another nice reaction video with a lot of insight into the Tool sound that I, and other fans I'm sure, agree with. You always mention how great they are at transitioning. This as well as their polyrhythms can make listening super interesting and rewarding once you give this band your undivided attention. Their songs, even Rosetta Stoned, has a basic tempo that is stuck to throughout all the transitions and rhythm changes/mixes. I particularly enjoy following the basic tempo, and marvel at their mastery, while listening to Pneuma, Rosetta Stoned and 7empest. As you said, their music is so complex that a single listen is merely an introduction. Many listens later, you're still hearing new stuff and quite often, the song you're critical of at first, becomes one of your favourites. I loved Invincible from the get go. It was one of those that I first really listened to while walking with headphones on. I think it such a great composition, build-up, interlude and grand finale. The music, vocals, lyrics all shone in this one. Personally, I have no favourite member in this band and have deep respect for what each member contributes to their overall sound. I am so happy they decided to do their own thing than go the safe, well trodden path of sound.

I’ve found that it never helps to “wish this were different” about a song. Going into a new tool song, it helps to have no expectations before hearing it or even during the listening of it. Upon repeated listenings, you find just how perfect the song always was and you just weren’t ready to understand all of it yet.

Aside from the fact that much of it is in 7/8 (oh, blessed be😌🙏), this is one of my favorite Tool lyrics. I’ve been through some serious shit… -got run over by a truck when I was 10 -rolled my car down a hill at 24 -broken bones various times and didn’t know it until the swelling started Not exactly a warrior, but I hear the song as metaphorical anyhow. Well… now I’m looking down the barrel of mortality-more years behind than ahead, and it really hits home. I probably won’t escape too many more escapades, but “for relevance” or just because it’s fun, I ain’t quittin’ yet.

I'm sure others have mentioned it, and you may have already been aware, but that solo where you said you said it sounded like they recorded it outside was actually Justin on the bass. I was watching one of your Pantera vids the other day and you mentioned the bass sticking out to you and how that was unique due to the bass typically blending in. That's the magic of Justin, there are times when he doesn't blend in at all, but it's also not obvious you are listening to a bass. Justin was the pertfect replacement for Paul (the first bass player who appears on Opiate and Undertow). I've said it before, but I absolutely love watching you react to Tool. Cheers!

This song always gives me the vibe of an aging Saxon warrior in the late 800s ad marching through the snows of southern North Umbria on his way to fight one more battle against the Danes Great Heathen Army knowing defeat is inevitable but his honor and pride keep him going into battle one last time. I realize this is not what Maynard is talking about but it’s where the vibe of the sing takes me.

What's your favourite album dude? For me it's Lateralus. I think it's a nostalgia thing. Fear Inoculum was scary at the beginning. Having gone through the wait for the release, it sounded too 'clean' when it dropped. Like Tool had lost their grit. It didn't take long for me to appreciate it as a masterpiece though. One criticism I still hold with Fear Inoculum is that there aren't enough songs on it 😆 maybe I'm being too greedy?

@@mitch1788 I think it's just the length of the tracks... FI/pneuma/invincible/descending/culling voices/7empest are an hour's worth of music in 6 tracks. The poly rythms only appear to line up because they actually always do... You can have adam in 7/8 time and danny in 3/8 time like they were in the beggining of the song, it sounds off but they will always meet on the down beat of 21/8 (in this particular case because the lowest common denominator of 7 and 3 is 21). They are masters of using polyrhythms

@@SeanStaxxMusic that is what impresses me the most... Not only is it a difficult song to play, but they wrote it... I don't understand how they come up with the sounds they do

You are right, this whole album is light on lyrics, relative to previous albums.

the idea is they were off for so many years and so many groups were trying to inherit from their style from. None succeeded in full and now they're back showing off where their music leads to. Try to predict and follow. Invincible.
