For the bass solo: Whammy ^ 1 octave bouncing on the pedal + a fuckton of stuff like distortion, chorus , flanger all together..If you really focus on the audio a few seconds before the solo you can hear a faint flanger sound in the background, which is his really satured wet signal with all effects turned on, you can really hear this live when he starts turning the pedals for the solo

@@thanospat6400 It does have a talkbox quality to it, but it's definitely Justin. The bass line drops out for the solo, and Adam's rhythm guitar keeps going through it. There are several bass parts in tool songs that I initially thought were guitar. Justin's tone is so damn unusual.

The polyrhythms in this reminded me so much of the title track on King Crimson's Discipline from '81 (in fact the whole album is reminiscent of it). If you haven't heard that album, it's a tour de force of interweaving time signatures that go out of sync and then mesh back in every 7 or 8 measures. That was a power quartet - Adrian Belew, Robert Fripp, Tony Levin, Bill Bruford.

What a rabbit hole to go down with Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson's solo work as well. He's just a musical freak of nature. Producing, collaborating, performing in his own bands, just a mountain of epic content. I'd throw a suggestion out there for you... Steven Wilson - Ancestral live from the Royal Albert Hall. Awesome showcase of his abilities with top shelf production all around.

Your description of Danny Carey and his fills being similar to rap artists delivery was spot on. I am not much of a rap guy myself ... but I could connect what you are saying and understand from being such a huge tool fan that Danny catch's you with those "A-Ha!" moments the closer you listen to them. His drum delivery is really special ... most rock is so straight forward that Tool is such a gem to listen to and pick the amazing patterns throughout their work and how the build and play throughout the presentation of the song. Thanks for the great reaction!

Getting back into mixing (hobby for me) and I ended up buying some high quality wavs of this album both to listen to and as mixing references for hard(ish) tunes....most of my reference tracks were pretty old :) The drums, bass and vocals in particular are amazing, I might prefer the guitars from 10,000 days but they work well here in the mix for sure. His snare is very unique and might not be what I'd go after on a lot of tunes, but the toms and kick are just great.

One thing, and I’m going to zoom through the comments now, is figuring out that break at the end where everything drops then they come back with a new section. Seems like it would make more sense to ramp up and accelerate to that Instead of the break. Anyone else?

@15:33 the 'solo' if you notice is done without drums. That's because this is Danny playing some sort of synthesiser or marimba type of instrument. He has to stand up, turn around and play the run, then turn around and sit back down to play the tribal cadence in a split second at the end. Very cool to see live!
