This band is no hype, this band is life. Soul therapy if you will. I’m so glad to be alive to witness the masterpieces they create.

brother....just saw them live three months ago, my thirteenth show since 93, he is still an absolute beast....and he's now 61 years old!!! 59 when they shot this video, the two drummer feeling is the poly Rhythms, that's his forte! TooL is so unique, and he's a big part of that, now that we've lost Neil Peart, He may be the most creative and cerebral drummer on the planet, a true great, thanks for the reaction...it was very precise

Dude is a living legend on the drums. He's also an absolute tank. Like 6'5", somewhere north of 250. Was a world class basketball player in college. I'm pretty sure Larry Bird gave him the uniform he's wearing here.
The Drum pads he uses are called Mandela Pads, he designed them himself, you can program with nearly any sound. Danny designed them to make a different tone where you hit it and what pressure. The man is a Genius!

To be precise, they are Synesthesia Mandala pads, which Danny developed with Vince DeFranco
Danny is one of the best drummers of all time 🔥🖤 And he’s from my hometown! Always have to throw that in there as if it means anything lol He’s incredible. I’ve been blown away every single time I’ve seen them live 🖤
Danny is the most precise octopus on the drums I have ever seen too! lol.
tool army reporting for duty. This "polyrhythm" sound, that is a tool mainstay, in their case on average is more properly called a "cyclic meter". It's more extended than your average polyrhythm... multiple meters in parallel, and of different lengths, that phase through each other and come out in the longer run. They got it from King Crimson... perfect examples would be the 'Crimson tunes "frame by frame" and "elephant talk", from the King Crimson album "discipline". I say this because Maynard explained so at a concert that I was at... For the most part, the only place I know of where these techniques are used in nature would be the music of the Balinese Gamelan Orchestra, where it has been highly developed. South Indian music may contain a little bit of it here and there. And the Baka people, back in the motherland, may do a bit of it at times. But only in Bali has it been so highly developed... They'll have dozens of people playing all kinds of interlocking parts of various lengths. phasing through each other, creating all kinds of resultant melodies and other effects... It's totally off the hook. Some of the parts may have long cycle lengths- such as two or three cycles in the length of the whole piece. They've basically taken it all the way. I had a guitar teacher back in the Cretaceous era, by the name of Matthew Monfort, who turned me on to this stuff. He would assign each guitar string one of the parts and create all these crazy picking patterns... Definitely affected me for life. peace and love be upon you, sir.
Hell yeah! I couldn't click fast enough on this reaction! Danny Carey's the man, master of polyrhythms, one of the best drummers of our time. Seeing them play this live was a magical, spiritual, out of body experience. I seriously lost my shit when they played Pneuma!
His polyrhythms are insane! I bet his right brain / left brain connectivity level must be off the charts!
I was a Tool fan for almost 15 years before I discovered there wasn't sometimes 2 drummers or stuff being dubbed in. I'm a drummer and never imagined this was being done by one person. Neal Peart was my guy as a kid and young adult, but Danny is my guy for life. Can't even begin to wrap my head around the stuff he does.
The dude you see briefly walking behind Mr Carey is Maynard James Keenan, the singer. During live shows you'll rarely find him in the normal lead singer spots on stage. In the past he's been known to not even be on stage or behind a curtain while singing due to crazy stage anxiety. A very interesting dude for sure Edit: "he's a freak dude!"... nah, he's an octopus

saw a perfect circle live a few years back and i definitely think MJK not being up front and center all the time adds to it. the art fully becomes the experience, not just the artist, even tho APC are a supergroup. and, given how talented the musicians around MJK are, that's a very good thing. i mean just look at danny.

Part of why he is up the back is also for audio quality. His mic doesn't pic up the sound from the stage monitors back there so his vocals are much purer and part of the reason why they sound so good live!

About time! A master of his craft is only as good as his fuckups. And Danny covers his like a boss…you’ll notice right after the last big heavy break when he relaxes and flashes a smile over to Justin, he misses one beat and for majority of drummers not named Danny Carey, it could have been a much more disastrous slip that could throw you off completely…but DC recovers and stays right in the pocket and most people didn’t even notice. That’s the sign of a true master. I’ve seen the drum cam at least 50 times and it’s still boggles my mind.
carey's use of polyrhythm is god-tier
I got to experience TooL live, the sounds just envelope you... almost no words. You're in an arena full of people but simultaneously feel like you're the only one on the planet. One of the greatest!

Here for Tool! Arguably one of the greatest bands of all time. And Danny??…. Shiiiiit. It’s like he’s lived a dozen lives as a drummer from all over the world and it all finally culminated in who he is today. Absolutely astonishing Artists. Every one of them.

Tool, is absolutely one of the most mind-blowing bands that has ever existed💪💯
Watching people react to this and literally seen your mind blown. It’s great seeing someone with an appreciation for what you just saw. Extremely technically skilled and complex sounds and he’s in the zone the entire song. I don’t tire of watching this either on my own or seeing someone like yourself react. Great reaction.

I want to see tool live so bad now!
I was at that show in Beantown!! Great vid man. Going off on what you want to know what he's thinking of while drumming, check out Drumeo vid feat Dennis Chambers hears Tool for the first time. He listens to a drumless track of Schism and gives it a go on how he feels his drumming would work with that track and a lil explanation on his though process.
The octopus is other worldly perhaps alien lol... He has his brain split in 4 quarters moving that frickin fast!!! Unreal!!
Danny Carey is the best for a few reasons to me. First of all he has an incredible inbuilt metronome. The guy doesn't even play all those insane polyrhythms using a click. Secondly he seems to be able to control his 4 limbs completely independent of each other and play different rhythms with each limb. This is clearly evident at 7:50 My mind can't understand that, I have enough trouble doing one thing at a time properly.
@SeanStaxxMusic

He doesn’t play to click?! That’s super impressive considering the rhythms he’s playing 🤯
With how much you liked the studio version and just drums in general, everybody knew you needed to see this one too.
Mind-blowing... Wasn't just?? Especially that moment when after building up the drum solo he rips into double kick bass, than the slow down, few seconds count as guitar and bass carry on and than... Rips into the whole drum set this time to go into the outro... Just magnificent... Bless 🌀🤘🌀🤘🌀

@@SeanStaxxMusic When you'll get to "Descending" that'll be the journey itself... The lyrics as prophetic as in "Fear Inoculum", maybe even more. So relevant to what's going on in these shall I say "Troubled Times". It's scary a d at the same time beyond imagination, how they been working on this album since 2006, and after dropping in late 2019, some of the lyrics became immediately relevant to a current world situation... MJK is props the most accurate prophet history has seen yet.
PS: 143 shows since 1992 in St. Louis opening up for Helmet and Rollins Band!💯🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐

14:20 yeah that’s why that 4/4 driving beat after the chorus (I guess it’s a chorus?) is so cathartic. Just when your brain is about to explode from poly rhythms you finally get to just bang your head to something. It’s like musical “edging” lol. I saw them in Feb for the first time and honestly I found listening to the whole concert stressful because of all the weird time sigs. I’m gettin old :)

Hey! I love your thoughts and your eloquence. You say you like drums and piano the most. Can't do better than Danny Carey for drums, but as far as keyboards go, by far the best performance is Cory Henry with Snarky Puppy in the song called Lingus (We Like It Here). 30 million views can't lie!
Believe it or not, he actually made a few small errors in this performance. Likely the reason he smiled at the Bassist towards the end. Like, "oops; well, we pulled back together". But the sign of a true professional, most people wouldn't catch it and they'll rarely show it. My takeaway is, TOOL music is so hard to play that even TOOL members fuck up sometimes. There's another video out there where Danny gets so far off that Maynard says over the mic, "Jesus, what the fuck are you doing!?!?" 😂😂
Legend has it that Danny made a deal with the Devil. We're not sure what Danny got, but the Devil got drum lessons.
