So back in season 3, Tracee, the stripper that was murdered by Ralphie, was referred to as a "thoroughbred". This season the horse has been connected to women in some ways, particularly with the jewel Tony gave Valentina (a horseshoe), but also with comments like "I already took his horse" (in the context of refusing to keep seeing Valentina), the double meaning of the line of "you killed her", and Carmela's feeling of jealousy upon knowing that Tony basically bought a horse. Plus the whole thing of "whores=horse". Tony never forgave Ralph, but his inability to properly process what happened due to mafia code and general fucked up nature of his lifestyle means he buried it in his subconscious. If you rewatch the season up until this episode, Tony has showed barely repressed anger towards Ralphie; first he starts asking for more money at the racetrack, then takes his horse, then his goomar (after him beating someone else with a belt for doing something way less egregious, but "similar"), and then, when Ralphie's at his lowest and seemingly trying to get better, you can see his resentment building up because he can't stand seeing this guy in particular trying to be better, because deep down he thinks that what he's done is unforgivable. I don't think it's conscious revenge for the stripper, Tony is not aware of this, but that's why there's a shot of Tracee's photo in the mirror of the bing. This season is perhaps the one that gets a bigger boost from knowing what is coming, the early episodes are full of subtle build up.

You're definitely right that one of the reasons Tony lashed out is his inability to control his anger, plus his love for animals, but right before he punched Ralph, Ralph pointed out his hypocrisy: "What are you a vegetarian now? You eat beef and sausage by the car load." Ralph called him out, and had to go. Throughout the episode, Ralph attempted to turn his life around and become a better person, which is something that Tony has been unable to do, despite being confronted regularly by Melfi. When Tony first noticed Ralph's vulnerability and changed nature, he brought up that he was seeing Valentina, which many have interpreted as him trying to get a rise out of Ralph, to get the old Ralph to rear his ugly head and prove that he isn't really a changed man, because if the worst person in Tony's life can change, he can too, which is something he doesn't want to confront, so he has to bring him back down to his level. Whether Ralph torched the stables or not, Tony obviously wants/needs to believe that he did. Also, when he was finishing him off, he shouted "she was was a beautiful innocent creature, what did she ever do to you?!" This is likely also a reference to Tracee, as Tony felt guilt for not protecting her. Additionally, he looks at a picture of her in the Bing at the end of the episode, to reinforce that idea. Pay close attention to the scenes that bookend episode 11, for more on this aspect of the Tony/Ralph situation. Btw the music that plays over the end credits was a remix of the duel theme from Once Upon a Time in the West, which I appreciated. And Joe Pantoliano (Ralph) won an Emmy for this episode, which was definitely well deserved.

This episode is a masterpiece of misdirection for its first half hour, up until Tony pays a visit to Ralph's house. Even watching it a 2nd or 3rd time, it's breathtaking just what a turn the whole thing takes at that point.

If you listen to many of Ralph's lines in this episode eg. 'Allow me to introduce myself' etc. They come from Sympathy for the Devil, the Rolling Stones song. Ralph to Father Intintola: "Pleased to meet you." Father Intintola to Ralph: "Were you there, when Jesus Christ had his moment of doubt and pain?"

Some interesting facts in this episode that you might like. Whoever did this was my favorite episode, with the last half being like a mini-movie with just Tony and Chris (for the most part). There are a bunch of references to Ralph as Satan, the "Sympathy for the Devil" (Rolling Stones) in this episode. Ralph says, "Allow me to introduce myself," to his son's doctor; he says, "Pleased to meet you", to Father Phil; and then, when Paulie is still pissed off at him about the prank call to his mom, Tony says, "A little fuckin sympathy, huh?" During the fight between Tony and Ralph, James Gandolfini really burned his hand on the stove and kept on acting in character. The reaction on camera is real. Subtle links are made between Pie Oh My and Tracee. For example, "She was a beautiful innocent creature" is what Tony is saying as he beats Ralphie's head into the ground. In a previous episode, Silvhio described Tracee as a thoroughbred. When Gandolfini and Imperoli were throwing Ralphie off the cliff, they were both drunk. They had to be chained to a tree. Both got drunk in the trailer while waiting around. Near the end of the episode, Tony then sees a picture of Tracee in the mirror. Tony then throws open the back door of the club; and walks from the darkness into the blinding daylight of the next day. This is where she was killed, at that back door. A metaphor for Tracee now being in heaven perhaps. Definitely a karmic connection between Tracee and Raplh.

Best line from the song (Sympathy for the Devil) they used was from Father Phil... he asked Ralphie “we’re you there when Jesus Christ had his moment of doubt & pain?” Symbolically Father Phil is asking Ralphie if he is the Devil.

I think Christopher was gone from the Bing at the end of the episode because Tony had clearly just murdered Ralphie, with whom he had been increasingly close with and relying on, without any real justification - and when Chrissy brought up that some of the guys might worry that they could be next to “disappear” without the protection of the boss, Tony told him very ominously that *”you’re the only other person who knows about this.”* On top of that, Tony was already mad about Chrissy doing drugs again. Even while high, I think he had the presence of mind to realize he could possibly be next.

What many miss in this episode is how much dueling is actually going on between Tony & Ralph. On the surface Tony appears to us as sympathetic to Ralphie’s family tragedy. But he’s not at all. He’s kicking Ralph when he’s down by telling him about Valentina while Ralphie is crying his eyes out over his son. Then Ralph suggests his life might have taken a whole different trajectory if he met someone as great as Carmela... that was a sideways threat to Tony for taking his woman (Valentina). I think that’s when Ralphie decides to kill Pie-O-My. He can’t take Carmela away from Tony so he decides to take something from Tony he knows will crush him... Pie-o-my.

Ok, time to point this out. I believe the writers included that scene at the end of Tony looking at Tracy's photo to make us think what he did to Ralph was justified and that in a way, Tony avenged her. However, David Chase is too subtle and loves to mislead the audience for me to think that this is the truth in Tony's head. He's a hypocrite, just like Ralph pointed out when saying he didn't care where money came from when he received a fat envelope so making a big deal out of Ralph possibly killing Pie-O-My to collect the insurance money reveals how much of a hard-on he had against him for killing an animal. It's even more ironic when a few scenes earlier he warns Paulie about not to lay a finger on him over a prank, that he should be able to follow the rules if he can quote them, but of course, when it comes down to Tony's personal feelings there are no rules and he kills Ralph anyway. He can't accept his contradictions because it would make him an unreasonable impulse monster, so Tony looking at Tracy's picture is in a way him trying to justify his irrational behavior. This is something we've seen throughout the entire show. Be impulsive/irrational, then use logic to justify yourself.

So why was the picture of Tracee put on the mirror for us to see?? Because the writers thought it looked cool or was it to reveal something important?? Tracee reminded Tony of Meadow in some deep way. It haunted Tony at times. What made Tony blow was Ralphie revealing to him that he’s a total hypocrite. That he eats animals like a vulture yet believes he has deep love & sympathy for animals too. Tony seeing his hypocrisy was what triggered his explosion of violence.

Fun fact about this episode: On an episode of Talking Sopranos, it was revealed that during the filming of Tony and Chris getting rid of Ralphie, they were very drunk. So drunk in fact, the film crew had to chain their ankles to a tree so that James and Michael wouldn’t fall off the cliff. Side note, there is a theory that not only was Pie a source of Tony’s reason for getting rid of Ralphie, but Tracy was a possible reason as well.

I always attributed Tony’s love for animals like this, he sees them as purely innocent. Like he tells Ralph here, “She was an innocent creature what did she ever do to you?” When it comes to people, Tony can always justify doing harm to them because he knows they are capable of doing it back. Like any time Melfi tries to pull guilt and truth from Tony he interrupts her to explain why he isn’t so bad because big business men are just as guilty of being a crook as he is. This was the last straw for Ralph.

Yeah I just commented elsewhere that Tony only has empathy for things that bring him joy and that he finds beauty in (in one way or another). Women who don't cause him grief? Empathy. The horse? Empathy. The ducks? Empathy. Women he doesn't want to have sex with or that cause him problems? Expendable. Any man? Expendable. To be treated well by Tony you either need to give him something first, be a hot woman, or be an animal.

@@LaCheeserie Yeah, that's probably a big source of his issue with Ralphie killing Tracee. A young girl about the age of his daughter dying at the hands of one of his men must have shook him deeply. But I also have noticed that women who don't cause him grief in general are treated well. All the women who treat him badly or cause him issues - Carmela (at times), Janice, his mother, Pussy's wife - are handled accordingly. But when he's with a woman who treats him well (such as the goomar he had and bought a sapphire necklace) he's infatuated and protective and pretty kind, all things considering. But once those same women cause him any problems, he turns on a dime. That same woman he bought the sapphire necklace for ended up almost being strangled by him.

Whether Ralphie actually killed Pie-O-My or not doesn't matter, because Tony is subconsciously killing Ralphie for the murder of the stripper Tracee at the Bing in season 3.
