Tony Hawk vs Christian Hosoi & the Bulldozing of Del Mar Skate Ranch Part 2
Спорт
Rare footage and untold stories of the history of Del Mar Skate Ranch continue in part 2 of SPOTS. Del Mar Skate Ranch was one of the most influential skate parks in the world, it nurtured a group of skaters who made their mark in skate history and originated many of the tricks you see today. Part two focuses on the last days of the Skate Ranch with more rare footage and photos of Tony Hawk, Lance Mountain, Kevin Staab, Christian Hosoi, Dave Swift, Grant Brittain and more legendary Del Mar rippers.
Behind every skate trick ever done, is a place or "spot" where it happened. Learn about these famous SPOTS that have influenced skateboarding just as much or more than the individuals who skated them.

I remember when I was around 11 years old, I lived in Burbank California. we went over to a friends house to Skate his ramp and Christian Hosoi was there skating the ramp. We skated with him for a bit and watched him skate this big yellow half pipe. What an awesome day that was!
We really love making these episodes but a lot of time and money goes into them and unless we get more views we probably won't make any more. There are a few Spots including Hollywood High that we'd like to cover so spread this link and help get it the views to carry on. Thanks, Ride

RIDE Channel hey ride bring it back now y’all get tons of views and we need to archive skating history before it’s gone forever- the skate culture
I came from Texas in Dec, 85. Last half of High School yr. Snook out of my bedroom window from moms house, to fly and see my dad I hadn't seen since I was 7. I had skate pics and surf pics ALL OVER my walls. When I got to Oceanside, I was in love. Ditched school (for first time ever) to go to Del Mar and watch a session with Tony, Steve, and Mike. Love when the kids say.... "you were there"?!!! I just smile, Yea.... yes I was. I am blessed. Even graduated with "Junior" Seau. Miss Cali.
As a member from 84-87 I can say the Ranch ROCKED!!

Tony, christ, kevin, lance and everyone else. Thank you, the memories of this park, and feeling i was part of skate history myself in witnessing you guys grow up as i grew up is an honor.
RIP Jeff Phillips
watching Delmar videos in 86.... that's what sparked it!
Had the great pleasure of riding and even competing at AM level at Del Mar. Very happy memories. I was last there in 1982. Beautiful film. Teared up at the end. :'o(
As a kid, I hung out at a skate park in Florida any opportunity I could. It could be 95 degrees and someone would be skating. We would skate and hang out in the snack bar getting on the adult's nerves. It was so much fun and a community of goofy kids just having fun and skating. Thanks for bringing back those memories.
The Hawk/Hosoi wars at Del Mar are legendary now, but even when it was happening in the mid-80s, back when skating’s popularity was bottomed out, we already knew we were watching something special. Skating was at such a low point back then, that the crowds at those contests made up a significant part of the skating scene, not just in SoCal, but up and down the coast and into the southwest. What great memories.
Just saw a video that the slalom area was dug up. that it wasn't destroyed and bird man and few others tuned up and skated one last time. EPIC!!!!!! those were the days man . Carlsbad/Spring Valley/ Oasis/whirling wheels/ escondido/Vista & Del Mar, I was fortunate enough to have spent a lot of time at all of them. Brought back a lot a memories seeing this video , thanks to who ever posted it!!!!!
That was my home park. I miss that place. This was an awesome segment
Will do. I love hearing the history of these spots, so I want to see more and more of them.
down memory lane..good to know all this
Fantastic episodes - thanks for doing them!
I'm 43 and still skate, thank you so much for this.

+Michael David Cilantro wasnt it referenced in the hotel scene? Tony ollied the fence?
AWESOME!!! I feel so nostalgic about this video
I love that you mentioned the highball. I totally forgot about that. So much fun back then. Cool you remembered.
If I ever had the money for it, I’d buy the land where Del Mar used to be and I would push to rebuild a modernized and revamped version of the Skate Ranch. I feel that guys like Jaws Homoki and Curren Caples would make some equally badass moments to that of the 80’s if they had that terrain
keep the history lessons up please , great upload , excellent channel , much love for the skate family!! hey, mr swank i always loved your boards on foundation
I am from Michigan and skated and followed these guys. Never even thought about it like this. Just thought that Christian had a lot of old tricks but could kind of coast when he rides and like it was all really cool. He had the Christ Air.
I was lucky enough to stay at the Solana Beach and Tennis Club a few summers with my big brother and my dad. I only skated there 2 or 3 times but the memories will be there forever.
Imagine getting the drain cover in the mail...what an awesome souvenir...
I want to see more of this series. You can even do some famous street spots like Carlsbad gap, Wallenberg 4, El Toro, and Love Park.
We need to draw more views for these episodes fast! Ive been waiting a long time to see respect being made tonthe true sport of skateboarding.
Amazing story!!!!
Swank, you're rad. Thanks for the pics for my zine back in the day. And the swag and shit, introing me to Phread
I miss Del Mar..... I was from Oxnard but went there as often as possible...
I never did see the point of the rivalries back then. Me and my friends liked both Hawk and Hosoi. But on the board side I always rode Santa Cruz stuff (Especially SMA boards) and rode Indys, where my friend would always ride Trackers and Powell Peralta boards. (Well until that whole Boneite thing happened)
just awesome!
85-87...... I was in a rehab in Encinitas and on my last day there we went to Del Mar..... Got tired of playing video games and went to watch the skaters..... When I saw the Keyhole my mind was blown. Next day when I got home in Esco I traded my pos surfboard to my homie for a Gator setup..... Never looked back. Non skate memory.... Buying blue slushies from Heather at the snack bar ...... Best place ever.
I have been through the destruction of my home as well, a local skatepark. This outdoor skatepark I went to every single day in Brunswick, Maine. It bulldozed was replaced by a 42 million dollar elementary school with promises to make a new one that never happened. Very dark times in my life...
I have a piece of it right here. Hanging at Del Mar all day till dark when I was a kid
wow i wish i was born in a little earlier man that place seemed so awe some
I was on tour in the States around the time they flattened Del Mar. It was such a shame to see it get flattened. I skated with Tod and Dave while there. It's good to see you guys are still about. 😈
Showdown at the Ranch and Down South at Del Mar. THE epic contests at DM, and I was THERE!
Any idea on what the next Spots video will be? I'd love to see Burnside, the Carlsbad Gap, Hubba Hideout or Love Park. I know On Skateboarding did Carlsbad, Love and Hubba, but I'd still like to see another mini doc on those spots.
This was our 80's version of a Woodstock trek, traveling in a VW bus, sleeping on the beach, and just enjoying skating. Good times....
Norcal rooted for holmes...so cal for hawk and the California Department of corrections rooted for gator

Hahaha, Gators STILL sponsored by Cal Dept of C.... and he hasnt skated for years! What other pro gets free room and board in their contract? Winning!!
Awesome :)
:58 Necter surfbaords sticker. Wow...I remember them.
I didn't realize at the time but I adopted that "Indy/Thrasher" mentality and Hosoi explains it perfectly here. I road Dogtown decks and Indys and pissed people off.
ya they forgot the shape and length if ever they want to rebuild. but ya i remember seeing a book about this del mar skate place and in the book it shows many skaters and stories about it, i actually rented the book twice from the library back in the 80s
Sounds like the best place on earth. I wish I could skate there now as a kid and it was still open
The thing is,kids now couldnt imagine the feeling of seeing this live or being in that era.. why? because it was so new,and so innocent. Nobody was worried about being sponsored or getting recognition from mainstream media.. it was all for the love, and good times.
I can relate to Hosoi talking about hearing about a contest and wishing you went. I wish I had gone to the Sacto street contest where Tommy G won and then went pro. I don't really know the point of bringing Del Mar back would be, 1985 is long gone and kids today have plenty of free skate parks. Back in the day, it was a real struggle to find some vert to skate. The late 80's was cool to embrace street and go on a some road trips and skate some banks instead of skating the half pipe all day.
these are amazing i will definitely promote
if you guys wanna hear some more awesome del mar stories read tony hawks autobigraphy, There is alotmore del mar history in that book
Did they perhaps shoot the pool scenes from the movie thrashin' at Del Mar SR?
Always wanted to skate Del Mar when I was a kid

Tony would always be playing pinball in the pro shop !
sick !!!
Fortunately that attitude still exists, granted it's a bit harder to come by. There's still so much that's new and exciting in skateboarding and there will always be. Wanting to get sponsored now makes sense in a way - you fall in love with skating and see that you can get somewhere with it and do it for a living. However, those of us who truly love it will continue to do skate regardless of sponsorship. To me it'll always be fore the love and good times. That's the beauty of skateboarding.
I was a Hosoi fan growing up. Its crazy to see how far Tony Hawk went with all of this. I feel bad for Christian that he did not have the moral and family support around him. Still my favorite skater. I just have to say that this just goes to show, how important being a parent, or having parents or positive role models in our lives is to our developement and future out come. Yes there are those exceptions, but for the most part. Just seems like now looking back on these old videos you can see towards the 90s Tony was much more conditioned mentaly and physically than Christian. My opinion is the drugs were starting to take the demise of Christian. Ive been down that same path. Its not telling where Hosoi would be today if he would have had a good strong role model, positive structure around him. I know he is sober and doing good, but like Tony with all the video games, endorsments, tv etc. Who would have ever guessed that skateboarding would have grown to what it is today. Its funny I go home to Ohio or see on FB guys I grew up with who made fun of the few of us who skated, and now their kids are totally into it.
reminded me of the pipeline last session video
i have a very rare mint delmar deck still

Nicest pro I’ve ever met. Closely followed by Ray Underhill RIP
the rivalries were more marketing, but yeah there was alot of animosity among alot of pros toward Tony Hawk that was kind of unfair to him. if you watch the Bones Brigade documentary then it makes sense
Did Del Mar have 2 skate parks? I skated one close to the race track at the Surf and Turf. I took the train down to Salona Beach to visit my friend as a kid. We surfed, took mini bikes to bet on the horses and see my grandpa who took bets at the top and skate.

brianbirc that was it. Across the street from Del Mar Racetrack and next to the golf driving range. Fun times!
Reminds me of going to my favorite mountain biking spot only to find bulldozers had torn it up for a residential development. Tracker by the way😂
holy shit, you can feel that that was their life, I don't normally post stuff like this but that was genuinely sad
THE TURF, FALLBROK RAMP and CEDAR CHEST COUNTRY CLUB please
anyways i love the 80s when u had many great decks , fishtails dang i mizz those days
lets get it built again
I miss the Highball!
such a shame. would have loved to go. :(
Crazy to think these are kid trucks now. Lol....skateing street took it to a whole new level... Damn. Actually getting off the board and using balance to catch it. Back then it was stay on the board and move around in circles. Lol
They should do a spots on the leap of faith.
Damit they closed that park when I was getting good at vert. I so wish I was there.
passion
Mike Not!...I remember.
Did stabb get electrocuted pre interview?
1:13 damn..
I grew up in upland and took a tile when they dissed it. Burnt with all my shit in the 2018 Ca. Fire. Tried to find it after… no luck.
whatever happened to billy ruff?
When they bulldozed it from that guys prospective he lost a family home. But from a wider cultural perspective they basically razed the Great Library of Alexandria of skateboarding, a loss for all of mankind and especially anyone whoever finds interest in the roller sports.
I live in Del Mar and I wish I could have skated this place, its tennis courts and a mini putt now. Some bullshit
It's kinda sad that skateboarding has lost its Agustas in a way
Spot on Carlsbad.
They should rebuild that shit with the same angles and everything!
Kinda like Deegan and Pastrana
hosoi's story from begining till now is way nore interestin than hawk's he'd of smashed it in the vid game market etc, drug's take you down, not racist or mind what background your from, rich, poor the end result is the same, he's still here though, many did'nt make it through to the other side, kinda makes christian's story more poetic as well , though ive been through addiction and it fuckin well doesnt feel poetic doin a rattle lol , god bless christian
Tony Hawks can do the BigTwisterFliip
First time i got the first coment!! Begin sick is not as bad afterall
actually 3rd.
Tony Hawkers can do good twisttricks
Best sk8ters ever too bad Del mar is closed:(
do a spot on carlsbad
