storiedskateboarding.com/
Tony Hawk is the most iconic skateboarder on the planet. June 27th is his wedding anniversary…and also the anniversary of the greatest moment in skateboarding history, the first ever 900. Tony Hawk’s 900 at the X Games in San Francisco, CA was LIVE on national television. For the first time, millions of viewers saw what really goes into skateboarding…passion, determination, camaraderie and perseverance. Shortly after that, Tony Hawk Pro Skater (THPS) was released and a whole new generation of skateboarders were born. It truly was, “the perfect storm.” But there’s more to the story than just that one fateful night in SF. Our host, Torey Pudwill takes us back, while influential skate figures and also such as; Rodney Mullen, Jamie Thomas, Bob Burnquist, Colin McKay, Andy Macdonald and Bucky Lasek break down the moment and the impact on skateboarding. #thps #tonyhawkproskater Be sure to check out the X Games coming soon, it will be the 25 year anniversary of Tony's first 900!

Tony just landed a 540 at 55 years old. Jordan isn’t still in the nba trying to guard Jamal Murray, Gretzky isn’t still in the NHL playing the best hockey players. But our GOAT Tony fucking Hawk still competing in the X Games. He’s the goat of all goats
Man.. I'm a 90s skater.. But Tony hawks pro skater got me into skateboarding and punk rock.. Skate videos.. Punk bands.. Z-boys and dogtown.. A whole lifestyle.. Who knew that blue cartridge N-64 game would have such a huge effect on my life lol. Who knew that I would end up coming to know Jesus.. Jesus loves outcasts Fs. Geoff Rowley, rodney and all them.. legends forever for sure... I hope in heaven i can skate with the raddest skaters and we can all be kids again.

I was there in sf for the 900. Same day Travis Pastrana jumped his dirt bike into the bay. The riding session with the best of the best in all sports around sf after every night was most memorable part of it all
I started skating when the first THPS was released for N64. I was in highschool, i was bullied everyday, i hated my life. I started skating then i found out there were other skaters in class and my life turned around. Now i had a crew, i was no longer bullied and i finally felt like a normal human being. Ive been skating since then, Tony is a huge inspiration in my life, probably i wouldnt be alive if it was not for him. Im almost 40 yo and skateboarding is still the most important thing in my life, i dont care if i fall and get hurt, i love skateboarding and i own my life to this piece of wood.

Even if we saw it on TV, My Brother and I had the honor and privilege to see this live. We went crazy. Tony Hawk is still to this day a role model.

Sounds like me (10 years younger than you though) through the 90's. Still carry all the scars and legendary glory in my small home town... my kids had no idea who I was back then and earlier this year I was in my auto shop and a friend brought over a BMX bike, the kids were blown away by some flatland stuff I could still do. Tony's significance to skateboarding and extreme sports is that of the god like level (yet so humble) that Matt Hoffman had back in the day. Being towed by a dirtbike to set extreme air records, and the pictures in BMX Plus! back in the day. It fueled my addiction to getting better and going bigger until I had taken so many slams that I was missing organs, was disfigured, and my head injuries started the onset of cognitive decline. Retirement was forced, not chosen, but I lived more in those years riding freestyle BMX than 10 people in their entire lives put together.

I started skateboarding because of the 900 and THPS Games. Later became a skateboardfilmmaker myself that lead to a filmmaker career doing commercials and documentary VOD shows, now at features. The 900 was a huge change for Tony Hawks life but I am sure it had a major impact on so many lifes - when I just look at myself. Imagine just a gnarly trick - made by a guy in a pipe couple years ago - what impact does it have? And well done, such an emotional documentary.

My family had actually been to events at that X Games the day before that happened (at least I think it was the day before, but I'm going off of memories from when I was 7). I was very into skateboarding at the time--though I only had some crazy plastic 60s board and a Toys-R-Us special. Going to watch the X Games was like a dream to me. Then, I remember watching him attempt the 900 on TV the next day. I was glued to the TV, watching him get closer and closer to landing it. Then he did, and seeing it gave me full body chills. I don't think I stopped thinking about that moment for months after it happened. Then of course, when THPS came out on Playstation, I got it and played it for hundreds and hundreds of hours, landing many 900s of my own. Thank you, Tony, for leaving such an impact on skateboarding.
I remember watching him throw it down. It was absolutely incredible!

Really was a perfect storm. Hitting the 900 in the x games on national tv created so much attention that drove kids to upcoming THPS which in turn made guys like Muska, Reynolds, Thomas household names to the kids and best of all made an enormous amount of kids pick up a board. Skateboarding today is still eating from the attention that moment brought to skating. Tony is such a good dude theres not a better dude that could be the face and represent skating to the general public

There was an old thrasher ad of a 13 - 14 y/o Danny Way that actually landed the 900 first. However because it wasn't in a contest, he never got any additional credit. Tony is a legend, no question. However, Danny truly is the ground breaking force that brought skateboarding to it current benchmark.. I.e megaramp!!
I'm not even a skater and I randomly turned on the TV during the X Games right before Tony started attempting the 900. I was intrigued and kept watching until he landed it. It was a totally unforgettable experience and I'm glad I watched it. Now, almost 25 years later, I fully recognize the importance and the magnitude of what I saw.
Amazing era, I'm glad I got to experience it as it happened, and still get chills hearing stories about it to this day!

Great video btw!
This is incredible. I was a kid watching that x-games best trick when it aired and every time I’ve watched the clips of the build up of tries he takes and how much closer he gets every time until he lands it, it gets me so hyped. Tony is an absolute hero of mine, absolutely responsible for getting me (and hundreds of thousands of other people my age) into skateboarding through his video games. But even before personally being skating I was a fan of it, used to watch various competitions on the EX channel here in the UK via satellite TV, which is where I first saw who became my favourite skater of all time, Steve Caballero. I was lucky enough to see the first 900 live on the X Games (again thanks to having satellite TV) which was such a strange occasion in my household due to my general aversion to sports otherwise and yet there i was watching it live and going ballistic over the results, to the point where I actually woke up my sleeping Father (who at the time worked nights and was generally speaking the person who would be watching live sports events, albeit generally taped, when we were still asleep). When he came down to tell me off he was so perplexed by it being through my watching a live sports thing that while he still told me off, he was a lot calmer about it than he planned to be and then he got a bit caught up in my excitement and waited with me to watch a replay of the trick while I told him just how significant it was. Now me and my Dad have a little bit of a strained relationship with one another because of just how different from one another we are (he is very much a "Jack the Lad" type of guy, likes his sports, brimming with confidence etc, as where I am a lot more introverted and bookish), so the first 900 is a special memory for me not only because of just how awesome it was to witness, but because it ended up being a bonding moment between myself and my Father. Great video dude, brought back a lot of happy memories for me. Im 100% subscribing to the channel and am looking forward to seeing what you put out next. I wish you all the best!

Thank you!
I watched the 900 go down in live tv Such a great moment
Production value is so good. Nothing compares to the 900, but this needs to be a series. Next obvious is Pastrana Double Back. Subbing to all Chase content now. 😬
