Rodney Mullen at Del Mar Skate Ranch - Premiere Episode of VHS Vault
Спорт
Kevin Staab, Tony Hawk and Greg Smith watch and comment on Rodney Mullen's warm up for a freestyle contest at the Del Mar Skate Ranch in 1983. Rodney created more modern "street skating" tricks then anyone ever before or after.
'80s professional skateboarder Kevin Staab, along with weekly guests, dusts off the old VHS tapes to share some never-before-seen archival skateboarding footage in VHS Vault.

Rodney: inventing the tricks that would change the future of skating Tony: what would happen if i ride two boards
Love how Rodney is decked out in all the safety gear yet hes the one least likely to need any of it.

@@diegogaetasound exactly, according to him there was a big pressure not to get hurt otherwise he would have to quit
Rodney told tony that losing was the best thing that happened to him in bones brigade
My first pro deck in the 80s when I was a kid was the Kevin Staab mad scientist deck. Loved that board.
I love watching old skating footage like this, it's a part of history and I love it!
the manual spacewalk thing he does at 2:01 is always gonna be the best looking freestyle move in my opinion
Without watching the Video title, just seeing these moves then immediately I knew it was Rodney! Legends watching a Legend ❤️🤟
That was amazing, I've never seen that footage he was absolutely f'ing killing it, did not even leave his board. WOW!!!!
That was sick!!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 freaking Amazing!!! Rodney Mullen, the greatest! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Kevin Staab is one cool dude. Great work , thanks guys.
Rodney a big inspiration 4 me! Thanks 4 sharing guys!
@RIDEChannel You guys need to do more episodes of this, they're simply awesome
Dang! It's crazy, I started watching this with Blues Brothers already playing on the TV! So sick. So sick great footage of the legendary Mullen!!
amazing episode
Great to see this historic tape. Now bring the real Rodney in person to the RIDEchannel
That video took me back. Those were fun days back then!!
dude he is in beast mode he like yeah guys dont mind me just got to write some history here
Incredible, really inspiring footage and good commentary. I found tony in the background with the 2 boards really funny.
looking forward to future episodes
More episodes of VHS Vault would be so good. Almost mesmerizing to watch.
awesome, just awesome!
Thank you Rodney 😎 you are legend
SO fucking good its ridiculous.....THANK YOU for sharing this
These guys are so epic!!
Kevin is the man such a humble dude and he rips just was in a class of ballers but was always a top 10 guy. 90 is my shizz as well 💜
Wow!
I actually did see a video of tony doing freestyle. You and Rodney are definitely amazing. Ps nice freestyle run. He won 34 out of 35 contests run every skater really inspired me
The trick after the first helipop is a gazelle flip.
You say "impossibles before you were born", but I was already there in 1982! I was born on Aug.20,1976 pretty much exactly 10 years after Rodney, and I relate to him a lot even though I didn't start skateboarding until I was 27
Just want to say that you guys are doing one hell of a job with this Chanel...fuckin' awesome guys and gals..
0:55: actually a gazelle, which is like a bigger spin with an extra body varial or a big spin with a full extra pivot (a pivot where both the skater and the board does a 180)
nice!
And all of that was done in one combo. 110 % control
Mullen rules
rodney mullen and daewon song=two best skaters in the world period
That's rad
i wouldn't normally give this old footage much time but actually it's pretty interesting really if you think about how these days shaped skateboarding today!
If it wasn't for Mullen, i don't think i'd be skating.
Yeah Kevin Killing Joke is playing May 22 at Yost Theater and The Roxy May 23 🙏
i love rodney mullen
LOL I saw some dudes doing freestyle in Vancouver in the 80s I was like holy shit thats crazy, damn this guy is talented tho
who disliked it?! It IS historic footage, well, some people just don't get it! Freestyle still IS alive and kicking, just not in the mainstream these days!
I really dig the "blues brothers" parody intro!
rodney mullens awsome
Thing about Rodney is, his mind is so beautiful you can take away the skateboard(oh god please no) and he is still just an exceptional human being.
It's amazing to watch this footage then watch joslin chomping gaps and stairs. We have come so far it's crazy. All thanks to Mullen and hawk and the other old dudes. If you dislike this you should have acid thrown in your eyes. Coz you obviously ain't using them.
@DahSkada Looks like!
DO you know how many times he put a foot down during that footage? Once (and only as part of a trick) 26 tricks with movement only generated through momentum.
Rodney was so tech back then, still is.
Please make a video with Rodney Mullen so that every skater here will know what's his status right now :D 10 tricks? We want to see him skate :D Thumbs up if you want too!
what i would do to get my hands on a 1989 Staab Witch Deck ... or even a reissue .. is there one out there ... if anyone has one for sale hit me up

trimmin420 try Amazon or try those skate magazines I see people with vintage boards alot
Fakie spacewalk needs to comeback!
In DEED impossible before it was even possible to impossible. Not even science found out yet that is possible to impossible, but Rodney just did it. It took almost a decade before Ed Templeton won the Münster Monster Cup with that signature move.
@CostonSkatesRegz Nope! Rodney had a bail, so Per won, tough comp back then! Rodney usually skates like 100% flawless, I know, I have seen him in person!
😁😁😁😁😁☺☺☺
lol i can’t believe tony hawk was there
Kevin Staab looks a little like Louie Barletta haha. Awesome video
this is better than anything Shane O'Neil has ever put out.
2:55. is he bouncing the board off the ground and then catching it again????? tough to tell from the shadow

Even now nobody can match up with him.
i was fucking born in 83, damn thats fucking old
warm up?
ya not alot of people now about Per Wellinder
FUCKING AWESOME SHTI VID!!!
Greg Smith is such a derp freestyler, says those caspers 360 flips are "surprisingly easy" yeah maybe if your front foot is on the ground.
The Head On The Door....
Rod is a BEAST , y dude hatin..lol
As a former freestyler, you are absolutely correct. I was sponsored by Santa Cruz and Indy and I never learned either 360 1 1/2 casper flips or backwards spacewalks. They are hard. If you want a deceptively easy trick, it's 2 3/4 rail flips. Pretty easy, but they look impressive. Also, check my video from right around the same period for a REALLY hard trick: /watch?v=9UJkg1FoYtU
This makes me want to practice so hard. But then. I realise. I never will get there. Ever...

Alex Coston I had heard that it was to see if he could lose. To make sure it wasn't because he was a favorite of the judges.
U dropped your shit😂
fakie space walks for days!!!
blues brothers all the way haha
then you forgot Jay Adams.
it was not a 720 shove it. it was a 540. :)
bruh
"These are surprisingly easy." Um no? I skated freestyle for 10 years and could never landed casper spins or casper 360 flips. Also Rodney himself has stated that "I see the casper tricks as some of the hardest moves I've ever done."
@alexcorona
6 жыл бұрын
EPöXY it depends on the person. Some people do the hardest tricks so simple. Yet simple tricks trip them up.
@AlaskanPotHead

Those are actually easy for me, easier than heel flips. I've never been able to do kick flips or 360 flips. Unless the 360 was from Casper. Always frustrated me.
@bami2
6 жыл бұрын
I couldn't kickflip reliably but I could casper->360 flip it and land it every time. Same with primos. The hardest part for me was actually kickflipping the board 540 degrees into the casper instead of just flipping it 180. Not nowhere near as precise and graceful as mullen, but I could land em. I think it's easier since you're using both feet to flip the board (more leverage) vs a kickflip where you use one foot to pop the board and the other to flip it, so you only really have one point of contact with the board to flip it with. Requires more precision to get it to land like you want. Also, I'm pretty sure Mullen was talking about casper slides (especially nose slides) where you're digging your board into the pavement that are hard as balls, not the actual flips and caspers themselves. Search youtube for "Rodney Mullen first casper slide raw footage" for the exact spot he commented that "hardest move" on.
da fuck?
