+Jake Lancaster I like that comparison because the control he had on the board with his shod feet, is definitely inline with what Bruce Lee did with nunchucks and matches, or nunchucks and a ping pong ball with the ping pong table folded in half to have a vertical bounce back wall. Definitely Rodney Mullen's foot precision at high speed is comparable as you've stated.

IKR! And then after over 17 minutes of that, he drops to a "normal" voice for like 5 seconds and I'm like "what the...!"

I've been skating for about 33 years. I nearly died in a fatal car crash, my leg was badly broken. The femur was shattered and smashed into my pelvis and there was some nerve damage causing my foot to be a little limp. It's my left leg and front foot on the board being natural. Also loads of scar tissue locking everything up. It's been 5 years since my crash and I'm still getting better at skateboarding everyday. My goal is to ollie again. Thanks for this Rodney!

Little known fact about rodney mullen. This guy was a genius on and off the board, even when he traveled for skating trips he was always studying some book or doing some homework. All the other guys thought he was weird because while they would drink and smoke inbetween shots, rodney would have his head in a math book doing problems. What a genius.

He's definitely an inspiration for me, my friends like to party most the time. Don't get me wrong i like going to the bar and i love my friends but I'd rather go out skating for the day then watching a physics documentary or read something. I want to be an engineer someday and skating helps me clear my mind so i can focus on things like calculus.

He is way smarter than he lets on, mans a physics genius, skateboard mechanical engineer. Literally. He is just extremely humble, but wants this from everyone, because he is trying to light everyone's passion. He was talking about seeing many different skate genius's and brought them to the show. They added so others can add in, and he wants others to know its there already. Everyone loves when someone does something great for everyone and for yourself. Skateboarding is just an art of many to share what great things you learned in life. Some later than others, Daewon thankfully getting some to notice him. Many famous writers that passed without being famous ever. Good example to get more people motivated into inspiring others.

Honestly.. i didn't expect much besides some goofing around and some stupid "mastering a skateboard means mastering everything" metaphors. I only paid like 50% attention to the video. Then i thought.. wait a second. That actually sounds interessting. I stopped playing my game, watched it again from the start and now i feel like this is one of the best Ted Talks i've ever heard. Definately top 10. Amazing. My hat is off! Huge respect!

Apparently there have been a boatload of requests for this talk to be used as a teaching aid to students in everything from finance to engineering to you name it. He was blown away at the positive response he got because he was in a room full of intellectuals and they were loving his talk about skateboarding.

I suffer from PTSD from my time in the Marine Corps. This really helped today. Thank you. Back on the board.

Same here man I remember being 9 or ten and I saw him on thps 2 and that sold me. I got a board and my first accomplishment was an ollie over my hose. I was so happy. But definitely Rodney was my inspiration for sure

My son wants to be an inventor when he grows up.. His mother says he needs the knowledge to be an inventor so he's very focused on getting those good grades. But no great inventors ever came from the school system. So i'm telling him to make up his own mind about things and to figure out how to remedy said problems.. the problem is that it's too theoretical for a guy at the age of 7 to understand. So yeah.. we don't have a clue about things.. But we will at a later time.. but by then it's too late and we've already chosen a path..

Welcome to the skater community man, its the best community I've ever been a part of, and this dude is one of our true legends, this dude invented half the tricks any of us know, if not more, every one of us owes him for what hes done for all of us, all these crazy tricks he's invented, he never kept a secret, he was always happy to fully explain it as much as he can, thats our whole community, when our buddies fall down, we help them get back up, when someone asks how did you do that?, we tell them, we share so much. I remember being a young kid out at the skate park in summer baking out, mates and i would have our water bottles and stuff, but they'd get hot after a long day out, and it wasn't uncommon for one of the older skaters to say "oi you guys need a cold drink?, we're heading to the shop", most of the time being our age, we spent most of our pocket money on our boards, so we'd say no, we don't have any cash, but then they'd roll back up from the shop, skate over and say "here boys" and chuck us a nice cold 2lt bottle of coke to share around or something, we'd chat and share tricks and tips, and then when we got older and could afford it, we did the same thing. If another skaters barrings crapped out, we'd chuck them one of our old sets, if someone broke a board, we'd throw them one of our old skuffed up boards, so at least they had something, tools got shared around the skateparks and always made it back into the owners bag at the end of the day. Proud to call myself a skater, and so glad we've had awesome dudes like Rodney to teach us and guide us, its dudes like him that helped make our special and awesome community what it is.

For those that do not skate here: in the beginning clips, when he does Primo slides(riding on the side of the board).. the amount of precision is insane. In addition, the one foot nose manual (one foot nose wheelie, if you will).. insane control of your balance and requires an insane amount of strength in your calves and ankles.. watching him always blows me tf away. No matter what anyone does, for the rest of time, Rodney Mullens skill will always be a marvel. Love this dude

I don't know if its his voice but this guy hits a nerve. I am just going through a break up and what he says resonates with me. Its about getting back up. Its what molds us. A sword cannot be made perfect unless you hammer it a few thousand times.

I love Rodney Mullen. Not only as a skateboarder, but also as an intellectual being. To hear him speak so eloquently and poetically about skating is always a pleasure. I enjoy the way he paints the mind, courage, drive, and perseverance of the skateboarder. Very relateable and inspiring.

hes also not "an" amazing skater. He is "the" amazing skater. Not only skateboarding but a ton of other action sports wouldnt be today where they are, without his influence. Just check the list of tricks he himself invented. The basis for almost all the tricks that streetskaters/bmxers/surfers etc. do these days, have been invented by him.

Rodney is one of the most wise and humble people I have ever heard speak, I'd give anything just to shake his hand and tell him how much his speaking effects more than just skateboarders it's actually emotionally moving because you can feel his emotions as he speaks.

I have been going through some changes in my life, somehow the last few days have brought me here, to my roots from 30 years ago. I was starting to believe, to conform to my situation, this is what I needed, a reminder of who I am. Time to get up.

My god. that was probably the most inspiring fucking ted talk I've ever seen.

Still to this day, my all time favorite skater. Just an all around amazing human being.

Rodney is a beautiful human

This man is everything I aspire to be one day. As a skateboarder, a man, and a powerful thinker. What a brilliant mind he is. His words are so precise and he has the perfect vocabulary for every sentence he speaks.

Rodney Mullen has to be one of the most humble people to walk this earth, he gives me my drive to skate! when I stop skating I listen to his talks or watch his videos and suddenly I'm inspired to skate again with a whole new look at skating and a bigger drive to try new things!!!

Thanks Rodney Mullen. I will continue to break through the barrier of disbelief.

In case you don't know the true effect Rodney has had on skateboarding, he revolutionized it. He invented practically all the flip tricks which essentially was the transition from old school (Dog Town and Z Boys days) to new school (Little Prodigy Nyjah). The guy is in fact a genius and since he is the first person ever to do a 360 flip, I consider him as like the Jesus of skateboarding (some of the tricks he's done will never be done by anyone ever again, but Daewon Song almost matches his freestyle skill).

Couldn't agree more. Everything starts with him and Hawk. Mullen is the most underrated person in history of sports, so to speak. He is skateboarding: doing it your way, on your terms, exploring yourself and the environment. He's like the ac/dc of the skating world, at face value: sure it rocks. But when you get the brilliance, how good they really are. You become humble.

No actually Daewon Song is better at street tech. Rodney was a freestyle skater who reluctantly started street skating and only because he was pushed to do so. Daewon took the flip tricks Rodney invented for freestyle and defined street skating. Yeah, Rodney can skate street....but not as good as Daewon. Rodney invented the tricks essential for street skating and Daewon took the tricks he invented and perfected them for street. Let's put it that way.

I'm always impressed upon hearing Rodney's contemplative and articulate speeches. It seems Rodney is the first person who adequately defines what makes us uniquely human. That is the ability to persist and learn, despite adverse stimuli. As he describes, after a fall, our instincts tell us "don't do that again." But a "cognitive override" forces us to try again, and eventually develop a "somatic awareness" of the environment. I've heard other people describe this as "muscle memory," used in sports and performing arts. It allows us to do things quickly, without thinking about the task. But neuro-scientists had never declared it in the common sense, eloquent way that Rodney just did. Bravo !

Fastest and most addicting 19 minutes in my life. I just watched this video waiting in the hospital because i have done smth with my leg because of skateboard, hope i can back on the board soon.

No matter how hard life hits you... Getting up again is what makes you the person you are! Thanks rodney for reminding me of that!

He's not being coy. What he means is most of his success doesn't come from his talent, but from his constant hard work and resilience. He probably wasn't the most talented kid when he began, like most people who succeed in any form of art, but he worked hard and smart and eventually got where he is. And that's something most people could do, if they invested 30 years on skateboarding and everything that comes with it.

He means physically talented. Skateboarding is ideas put into motion. Mullen is not the finest physical specimen in skateboarding but his way of thinking and originality is genius level. And it’s what makes him who he is. He always says skateboarding is a way to express your mental energy in a physical way. He embodies this.

its a shame... this needs to have a lot more views. Rodney is one of the wisest skaters on earth.

I was part of the late 70's skate scene. Pools and banks then skate parks. Now im 60 years old and 40 plus years later Rodney has giving me motivation to go skate again.

The comparison of skateboarding to a language was really inspiring. As a skateboarder, I can understand and relate to that. After all these years, I look up to this man, not just because he's the godfather of street skating, but also because he is a wise and humble man.

He is an amazing guy. Every time I see him speak, I always learn something. It's amazing to think a guy talking about skateboarding, can impart knowledge in such a way. I think It's because of his internal passion for skateboarding, it comes across in everything he says, and he has a lot of wisdom, and sees things in an interesting deep way. If you've not seen bones brigade, he's interviewed on there, and he just seems like he's a genuine kind charming man.

Thank you Rodney for inspiring me again after 15 yrs. I can see that exited child in your mind. I need to find that too!

Rodney speaks the way he rides, its pure poetry. the man is a true to himself and his craft. Bottom line success, is falling down 8 times and getting up 9.

Wow, this is one of the greatest Ted talks I've had the pleasure to listen to, and he has another that is just as good. You stop and think it's going to just be b.s. but every statement is a carefully thought out and intensely meaningful.

There is always a pioneer and a follower. Rodney soaks the world in his passion and instruction to the world. When he teaches, with examples, it's clear. This guy has gone through so much inventive thinking, that he has created a style of manoeuvring the skateboard... I hope to skateboard one day, but everyone starts from somewhere..so I hope to begin at the start, and be honest with my ability all the way...soon...

Reading through these comments, everyone loves this guy...lol He definitely need to be more in the media. There are to many people who've never heard this man speak. He's so damn inspirational and could make you feel so locked it on what he's talking about or doing...

He is a cynosure in the sport, and as a motivational speaker. From the context of riding, this presentation pertains to human creativity, resolve, and resilience. Bravo.

Never too late to try again :p I do parkour and didn't practice coz of strangers gave me funny looks. Then I stopped caring and said hi to people passing by. It is reay awkward but once the moment passes its fine.

I just want to start crying when rodney speaks. So peaceful and meaningful

Rodney Mullen - king of kings, yet he would never tell you that. What an inspiration!!

Absolute brilliance on so many levels. Needs to be watched over and over and over and over again.

Skateboarding is King! It is the pursuit of personal perfection at great physical toll. I used to skateboard passionately, was quite talented until the day my Father stated to me you will never live off this Grow up and enter the workforce....doing so I always thought skateboarding will be there again one day! I had to painfully acknowledge the fact I had to make money to live...always with great personal regret I realise I gave up my Dream and took up someone else's! Please learn from me and follow your dream and passion to the End! If you fall get up and correct that sketchy bail again and again!!! Peace!

What an inspiration this guy. Hes name is the synonymous to nothing is impossible.

Rodney has the rare talent of both vision and understanding the machine in things. He defines them so others can better appreciate the complexities of skateboarding which tbh he makes look so fkn easy.

What is with these comments about that Rodney is "this & that"? I guess some people are shocked to know that skaters or even people that do extreme sports can actually be good, humble and intelligent individuals.

As a semi-ex skater - meaning I skated hard since I was 13 till I was about 25 and of course life happens and priorities change and your body changes and I am now 32 and still love to skate but I can't skate the way I want or used to - this was the most brilliant speech, I've heard on skating . Some odd comments and thumbs down is strange to me if you consider yourself a "Skater".
