The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Bobby Hackett was amazing. I especially like all the work he did on the Jackie Gleason albums.

Chip....your description of Bobby Hackett's cornet shadowing Tony "like clouds in a sunset" is as lyrical as the words to "If I ruled the World". Since you brought it up, I listened again, and noticed that Bobby was not just playing fills between Tony's lyrics but actually a kind of counter melody or obbligato to the melody. Bobby was the anti-trumpet player. Instead of the high pressured high-note blasting we expected from players like Maynard Ferguson or Doc Severinsen, Bobby's playing was soothing, mellow and romantic. He proved that the horn family could be as effectively soft, as it was loud.

Thanks, Jennifer. I don't think Tony really gets the props he deserves as a jazz singer. If you dig the sweetness and warm fluency of Hackett, on a more post modern note, you might want to check out the work of my friend, the late RON MILES.

Tony just pulls you in with his renditions. Superb.
I have no word. Just the excellent voice and trumpet makes me happy.
My wife and I saw Tony Bennett in Reno Nevada in 2014. He was 88 years old and the show was astounding. He was still at the top of his game. !!!

Nailed it. Tony has serious pipes and a brassy unique ringing powerful voice. A thrill to listen to!
Mr Bennett is a time machine he brings you along on a ride each song
Absolutely amazing ! Saw him with Lady Gaga last year on tv special for his birthday. God love him, he sung his heart out even with his illness. I actually saw this episode on tv in 65. It moved me then and it still does. Stratospheric performance!!

The BEST ..LOVE THAT VOICE..🙌 LEGEND👍👏👏👏👏
Tony Bennett with Bobby Hackett playing behind him. You guys, for a brief moment in time DID rule the musical world.
❤ Beautiful! Originally from the Broadway musical “Pickwick”.
wow Tony Bennet rules!
The very first time I heard this beautiful song, it was sung by Carol Burnett on her weekly variety show. I was about 9 or 29 years old and never forgot it's impact on me.
Simple but complex. We need people to come forth with their talents, (no synthetic crap allowed)
The Power and the Glory.
Such good times!!
Absolutely amazing. And this song is so needed today.

bravo!
When I hear this, it seems as if he DID rule the World!!!
Ran into him twice in North Beach in San Francisco in the 1980's, his song "I left my Heart in San Francisco" means a lot to people like myself who grew up in San Francisco and who left for whatever reason.
Continued strength to Tony Bennett, his family, and other loved ones.
Tony B. --Simply the “Greatest “contemporary singer of all time!…Bill Ott
A Great tune....tony does it best
This prformance makes me think of Tony's album title "The Art of Excellence". Singing does not get better than this. The song is also an example of some of the great work of Leslie Bricusse.
Lovely!
Pure magic!
Superb singer and song class, music from yesteryear the last of the crooners.

Darn right! Thank you to my Aunt Lee who taught me piano at 4,5,6 ( now I am 65). Her eyes welled up w/ tears and I inherently knew as a soul: that this is the best of what we can hope: and: this in 2023: I hope still for ALL on this earth plane… 😘👍☮️
What a legend.

I really like his songs and really is a nice guy from what I can tell about him ! Hes been on Judy Garlands show I think too ! Im 65 years old ! I love most music but the music like Tony Bennett Frand Sinatra Judy Garland are really great singers of their time !
Ralph Sharon, conducting from the piano. And I believe that's the great Jake Hanna on drums (he was on Woody Herman's band in this time period...). Wow, this is so great!

Une belle chanson
R.i.p
any singer that uses autotune should hear this and take notes
Context: Tony sang this during the Selma marches after Bloody Sunday. He was preparing to fly down to Selma to march when he taped this. After the protest, Tony’s cardriver in Selma was murdered after bringing Tony to the airport and the killers were KKK members.
...I was about 9 or 10 when I first heard this song, correcting my former comment.
When counterfeit money is introduced, good money disappears. I remember when our silver coins were replaced by what passes for money today. Just like the mediocre "singers" of today have edged out the true singers like Tony Bennett.

Great rendition of a dumb song. If I ruled the world, human beings would do whatever I said.
