The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Mr. Bennett! You will be remembered in perpetuity! You died of Alzheimer's at 96. Just last year! I was just 3 years old when you performed. This in 1965, which proves your memory will live on and on for generations! LOVE DAVE H.

Tony Bennett made this his signature song, and sad though it is, he just hits it out of the park every time he sings it. The joy in his phrasing, plus the perfection of his delivery, always brings the house down, as well it should. So great to see it done live!

ONE of his signature songs. I’d say “I Left My Heart In San Francisco” is his true signature song.

I remember this performance, I was very very young. My Dad was singing along on an occasional line. It was quite an impactful performance. What an individual sound and style. So authentic, touching people’s hearts, connecting.

This why Tonny Bennet is still cranking it out at the age of 95. He's what you call Top Shelf... he's like a fine wine... he just gets better with age!! The Best of the Best! Thank you for sharing! 💖

Wow..just….wow. Thank you for posting thins, ESS! What a performance. And this is why I prefer live versions. Tbh, never cared too much for the studio version of this song, This just blows my mind. The little miscue at the reprise where the band comes in at the end=what a band! They were GOOD! And Mr. B went with it, used it in his delivery, you know? Such a pro. So much to learn from these clips, so much to enjoy. Keep em comin! :)

Tony a better singer and performer than Frank Sinatra, in my opinion. This appearance on Ed Sullivan only reinforces that view. I love Frank, don't get me wrong, but Tony could wring so much more emotion from a song and his voice range is amazing.
