Toni Tennille Reveals There Was No Deep Connection In Marriage To 'The Captain'

In a new memoir, singer Toni Tennille reveals her troubled marriage to her ex-husband, Daryl Dragon. The two comprised the 1970s group Captain and Tennille, and had a string of hits. In Tennille's memoir she reveals her life was not the perfect love story. Asked if her relationship was a nightmare, she told IE, "It kind of was. I was this person constantly looking for something he couldn't give," she said. Tennille said their relationship was fraught with problems from the beginning. #InsideEdition

Twenty years earlier, Louis Prima and Keely Smith were hugely successful with the same formula. He was flamboyant, and she was stoic. The Captain's awkwardness in front of the camera was always obvious, which makes me think that she was the one pushing for stardom.

After hearing this I feel so sorry for Toni Tennille. That's heartbreaking that she stayed in a loveless marriage for so long just for us. It was wrong of her manager to suggest getting married for the tax break. (There's actually a marriage penalty tax.) I waited on her once, the same day I'd seen her interviewed on the local news. She's as beautiful in person as she is on TV, and very nice. (No Captain tagging along.) My employer has a rule about not asking celebrities for autographs, you can be fired if you do. But I was so tempted. I only saw her that once, back around 1986, but it's a sweet memory. That smile of her's is huge, and genuine. Thank you for the video, greatly appreciated, brought back fond memories. Take care, stay safe, have a nice day. 👵🙂✌️🖖 😷 🙉🙈🙊 🌎☮️🕊️

I remember having a HUGE crush on 'The Captain' back in the day. I was in my early teens and he was so gorgeous. And just like Toni says in her book, it was the shyness as much as his looks that made him so attractive. I'm truly sorry for the both of them. I'm sorry that Toni did not get the love and intimacy any woman (and most men) crave, and I'm sorry for Daryl, too. After reading Toni's book and now watching these old clips, it almost seems as if Daryl has/had maybe a form of Asperger's Syndrome? It's almost as if he was locked into his own brilliant world of music and that's ALL he could experience. Very sad. I wish them both well.

Give her an Oscar! Talk about acting the part..... I loved her as a kid. I still think she is one of the great singers of the 1970s. No clue of their loveless marriage. It makes me very sad for her. In this interview she seems like a whole new woman! ((Release some new material!))

Toni Tennille got the rock and roll last laugh. Her voice will always be the better part of the duo, AND she was hired by Roger Waters to voice Pink's wife on The Wall. She will always be rock history!!!

So sad. My wife and I liked the Captain and Tennille when we were both teenagers in the 70s even though she grew up in upstate NY and me in Alabama. They looked they had great chemistry and really loved each other on stage. Shame that chemistry didn't translated into their marriage. I hope she will find true love. I know I did fortunately.

Tony Tennille is dynamite! She looks so great! It's interesting to hear the reality behind the scenes. Captain and Tennille was one of the most amazing pop groups of their era, no doubt. Too bad she gave up romantic satisfaction for the fans.

Oh,, yes I am so disappointed to know the truth...but I understand. For me, listening to those beautiful love songs, hit my heart, smack dab!! I felt every word, every emotion. And I felt them deep, because I felt/interpurted each word with such strong feelings. I FELT the words Toni was singing had the emotion behind them. As I said, I understand that she stayed on because of "US" the fans. Isn't that what parents do, stay together "for the kids?" But, now, knowing the truth, I see the emotions in her face, feel the words she sings and realize she was striving and wanting to feel those words in her own life. She hungered to have the feelings she was singing. I understand, when we hear "LOVE SONGS" either we "feel" those words/live them, or we "wish" for them and the connection we need. Bless you Toni Tennille for enduring decades without any emotional connection to the man you shared your life with.

When they performed on their television show, I thought he looked like he was emotionless, opposite of her. I thought he was kind of a brilliant musician but boring guy. Knowing what I know now, I understand why. RIP CAPTAIN.

I think it sad when one speaks of others in a bad light after their death. Especially being married for quite a while. It is easy to talk bad about someone once their gone, for they can't defend themselves. She should have kept that to herself. They were both great in their public persona.

I loved Captain & Tennille as a preteen! I’m so sorry to hear about Daryl’s passing. But, for Toni to say she stayed married for almost 40 years because she didn’t want to let her fans down... is a bit nutty. Cher didn’t have a problem living her life. I dunno, I’m not buying that excuse. Daryl always seemed odd to me as a kid. I never felt a connection between the two. Maybe she was used to living for others? She never changed her hairstyle after all! But, that’s a shame that she lived so long without a true loving relationship. Eh, she probably had someone on the side. She certainly didn’t looked crushed, in this older interview. Not to diminish her mourning the loss of Daryl now though.

I don't want to hear her say this. How I loved all those memories of watching her laugh, smile and sing. And then to hear this ? I don't know if I want to watch it. After watching it I hope it's not as bad as it sounds. My whole perception of her and who she was meant a lot to me.
