I was a very sad child (long story); and certain songs would make me cry, never knew why...but this was one. As an adult, I think it was the melody. Tom T Hall was right up there with Don Williams as a legendary songwriter! And yep, it still makes me cry “God Bless the Children while their still too young to hate”.

Tom T. Hall is among a handful of the very best and most prolific of County songwriters in history. He simply cannot be topped. Every connoisseur of County has their top three Tom T. Hall picks, but I can't possibly get my list of favorites under 10. Here we go: "The Homecoming", "The Year Clayton Delaney Died", "Ballad of Forty Dollars", "Faster Horses", "Fox On The Run", "Song of The South", "That's How I Got To Memphis", "A Week In A County Jail", "Ravishing Ruby", "I Washed My Face In The Morning Dew", "Salute To A Switchblade" -- ah, shoot, that's 10 already and there's still "Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine" and "Country Is" and you see what I mean? Long live Tom T. Hall, his legacy will never fade away.

Everyone has their favorite musical artists. Most of the time they choose that artist because of the songs they sing. Tom wasn't ever my favorite artist, but I have always loved his music. From a very young age, I've had a huge amount of respect for this man. As a performer, he has always made me feel like I was the person that he was talking to, or singing for. I'm sure a lot of people had similar feelings. If all of country music was a family, he was the all knowing, all seeing, all loving, Grandfather.

Oh man he still has that captivating presence. He is one of the best writers and storyteller singers around. I'm always right around where you are with the ratings and was thinking hope he goes above a 9 on this. I had a 9.4. I'm always within a .3 either way. So good to here these gems and you turn me on 🤔 to new artists as I'm mostly in the past legendary greatness. I hope, like a lot of your requests to turn you onto past greatness that withstands the test of time, like these new artists hopefully can withstand the test of time and become legendary greats as well. There is a little ray of hope with some of these newer talents keeping the tradition alive with old and new originals almost as good. 🙏🙏🙏 🤔 let's see where to take you next. Got so many greats 🤔 Bill Anderson with Roy Accuf - I Wonder If God Likes Country Music Whispering Bill never disappoints and not to influence the rating I have this one at....... 😬🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ almost let the cat out of the bag 😁😁

I was introduced to the great Tom T Hall through covers by the Drive by Truckers and Patterson Hood's solo albums. I think he's one of the finest lyricists ever. His writing is devastating in its simplicity. He can lay you low with a mundane observation. There is something about the economy of his songs, the way he structures his lyrics that packs a punch. The DBT's "Mama bake a pie" is one of the best covers I've ever heard, one of the best songs ever written about the cost of war. Hood's cover of "Pay no attention to Alice" is similarly powerful. I'd urge you to check these out out (maybe the first for veteran's day?)
