This was written about a jail in Eastern Kentucky, Prestonsburg Floyd County, If I’m not mistaken the Jailer’s or the Sheriff’s name, not sure which one was Sam or Lawrence Hale, brothers

Out of hundreds of his songs, this is my second favorite Tom T Hall song. I would love to see your reaction to my top fave, which is "The Homecoming." It is the most understated poignant song. I mean, most of his killer songs and killer lines are understated, he just casually slips them in; but this whole song is. I call it a Hemingway novel in three minutes.

He was at a red light, wasn't speeding on his way in, but after the jailers wife was smiling at him, he was speeding as he left. Great lyric writing.

"The jailer had a wife, and let me tell ya she was awful, but she brought that hot bologna every day, and after 7 days she got to looking so much better. I asked her if she'd like to run away." "The Homecoming" is my favorite by him, and I loved them all.

Tom T is the ultimate storyteller when it comes to regaling us with tales from the book of life, often tinged with comedy and irony. His songs unfold ln cinematic fashion like short-stories or vignettes populated by quirky characters and we are drawn into their experiences. The tune featured is one of his true classics and he has many to his name. Another excellent reaction video, Don, and keep rockin' dat country.

Great song...nothing like pan fried bologna! The one time I went to jail it was cold bologna sandwiches three times a day. :-( But cooked at home, they were a much adored breakfast staple. Today most folks make sandwiches with them but we always served it on the side like bacon or sausage. My mealtime ritual was to eat the browned edges first and then dip the soft middle part in the runny egg yolk. Don't know if this was a Texas or Southern thing, but everyone I knew did the same.

Had the pleasure of meeting Tom at Opryland in 1976, he was just walking through the park. Nobody noticed him he signed a autograph for me and asked me not to make a fuss over him as he just wanted to walk about quietly, a nice guy.

I don't think he was racing. He was sitting at a stop light with out of state plates. He got caught in a deep south speed trap of the 50s or 60s. Every little toaa has a jail, but not a judge. The county has a circuit judge who makes his way around to all the towns... you don't know when he will actually show up (it worked that way with preachers too. Every town had a church and the priest would make his way around too all of them).

This was so much fun. One of my all time favorites. Tom T. Hall is an amazing writer storyteller. @rockn2country I like your imagination on the possible outcomes. Either of those could have been fun twists for a song. Maybe you should do a little songwriting. Hot Bologney, eggs and gravy.....I'm guessing that would be bologny gravy?......by now I wasn't quite so hard to please.

I always thought it funny that 'in thirty minutes' he was out-of-state. If he wasn't speeding when they arrested him, he sure as hell was speeding when they let him go.

I think you need to listen to it again. He didn't get pulled over. He was sitting at a red light and the cops just "said" he was speeding. It was all just small town BS to take his money.

He was 'sitting at a red light' -- the implication was he wasn't even moving when they said he was speeding. There's nowhere in the text of the song that he was actually speeding -- because he wasn't. Tom T. Hall's lyrics are pretty efficient in that he tends not to put in any details that are there just to fill syllables; and often what he doesn't say is just as important as what he does say.

Lesson learned--watch your speed in a small town? He was sitting at a red light, dude. He didn't get pulled over. He was sitting at a red light. I missed that the first time I heard this song, too; but it makes the song even better once you realize that he wasn't even speeding. Despite that, I thought your analysis was excellent.
