This is my favorite Tom T Hall song out of many great great songs.
Tom T Hall is one of the best story tellers in country music. Thanks for doing this video :)
This was written about a jail in Eastern Kentucky, Prestonsburg Floyd County, If I’m not mistaken the Jailer’s or the Sheriff’s name, not sure which one was Sam or Lawrence Hale, brothers
Salute to a Switchblade is a really fun Tom T song!
Out of hundreds of his songs, this is my second favorite Tom T Hall song. I would love to see your reaction to my top fave, which is "The Homecoming." It is the most understated poignant song. I mean, most of his killer songs and killer lines are understated, he just casually slips them in; but this whole song is. I call it a Hemingway novel in three minutes.
He was at a red light, wasn't speeding on his way in, but after the jailers wife was smiling at him, he was speeding as he left. Great lyric writing.
"The jailer had a wife, and let me tell ya she was awful, but she brought that hot bologna every day, and after 7 days she got to looking so much better. I asked her if she'd like to run away." "The Homecoming" is my favorite by him, and I loved them all.
Tom T is the ultimate storyteller when it comes to regaling us with tales from the book of life, often tinged with comedy and irony. His songs unfold ln cinematic fashion like short-stories or vignettes populated by quirky characters and we are drawn into their experiences. The tune featured is one of his true classics and he has many to his name. Another excellent reaction video, Don, and keep rockin' dat country.
Great song...nothing like pan fried bologna! The one time I went to jail it was cold bologna sandwiches three times a day. :-( But cooked at home, they were a much adored breakfast staple. Today most folks make sandwiches with them but we always served it on the side like bacon or sausage. My mealtime ritual was to eat the browned edges first and then dip the soft middle part in the runny egg yolk. Don't know if this was a Texas or Southern thing, but everyone I knew did the same.
Tom T.Hall was called the story teller for a reason! Might I suggest “old dogs and children and watermelon Wine” by Tom T. Hall?
Another great tune always makes me smile..... Thanks for playing it .... HAKAD..... Willy, Dan,and Don
Tom T makes a movie with words and a melody.
“He said where’s the guy that thinks this is Indianapolis..” !!
I think my absolute Favorite from Tom T is “Hope It Rains at My Funeral”
"Y'all ain't from 'round hyar, are ya?"
Tom t is a great singer and song writer . He also wrote songs for other people
❤❤❤
He was a brilliant song writer. As you noticed the details. The ballad of 40 bucks is a good one for unfolding a story.
A good story teller. I can watch the little movie in my head. Love Tom T. Hall.
My first time hearing this great song! Love it. Great take on it
The Ballad of 40 Dollars is another great one.
One of my Fav from T T hall!
Had the pleasure of meeting Tom at Opryland in 1976, he was just walking through the park. Nobody noticed him he signed a autograph for me and asked me not to make a fuss over him as he just wanted to walk about quietly, a nice guy.
Tom T. Hall, is known as the story teller, and for good reason. He writes he own music. Cheers!
Unfortunately he’s now the late Tom T Hall. One of his most popular songs was “That’s How I got to Memphis.” Worth a listen.
I don't think he was racing. He was sitting at a stop light with out of state plates. He got caught in a deep south speed trap of the 50s or 60s. Every little toaa has a jail, but not a judge. The county has a circuit judge who makes his way around to all the towns... you don't know when he will actually show up (it worked that way with preachers too. Every town had a church and the priest would make his way around too all of them).
Great song. My papa made us fried bologna sandwiches when my mom was away and he had to cook. He is such a great story teller.
The 'Story Teller' Nobody can do it like Tom did
Tom T Hall could really tell a story. In concert he often tells a good story before the song.
Just seeing this... welcome to the dark side! Glad your tuning in to our ole country!
Hey Don you know I love your Chanel and I try to watch it all and this one was a good one. I’ve got a tidbit for you my moms family was from Olive Hill Kentucky and my great aunt dated Tom T Halls father back before Toms mother and father met. Small world huh anyway 👍on the video keep them coming

Still living in Olive Hill myself.
Florida to Ohio once a year in the car, heard my dad play Story Songs a lot. This was my favorite I think. You have to infer a lot in these songs.
Wow... You have aot of videos.. I have just subscribed. I never got to the bottom of your videos list... I see you have Hank Williams Jr... I have a request for a song that Hank Jr and his son did, overdubbing Hank Williams Sr songs... 3 Hanks, Honky Tonk Blues...
This was so much fun. One of my all time favorites. Tom T. Hall is an amazing writer storyteller. @rockn2country I like your imagination on the possible outcomes. Either of those could have been fun twists for a song. Maybe you should do a little songwriting. Hot Bologney, eggs and gravy.....I'm guessing that would be bologny gravy?......by now I wasn't quite so hard to please.
Loving Dan's requests. And I always wondered what HAKAD meant haha
Don can you react to It's hard to be humble with Mac Davis and Kenny Rogers I think it might like it
The point was he wasn’t speeding. He was sitting at a red light. It was a speed trap. It was a way for the town to make money.

I always thought it funny that 'in thirty minutes' he was out-of-state. If he wasn't speeding when they arrested him, he sure as hell was speeding when they let him go.
I think you need to listen to it again. He didn't get pulled over. He was sitting at a red light and the cops just "said" he was speeding. It was all just small town BS to take his money.
I don't think he was racing just speeding. It was basically a speed trap just for extra money. Another great song is ballad of the 40 dollar bill

He was 'sitting at a red light' -- the implication was he wasn't even moving when they said he was speeding. There's nowhere in the text of the song that he was actually speeding -- because he wasn't. Tom T. Hall's lyrics are pretty efficient in that he tends not to put in any details that are there just to fill syllables; and often what he doesn't say is just as important as what he does say.

Excellent song.
would like to see you react to Hank Williams, Be careful of stones that you throw.
Got Willie out of prison today 6 hr drive no DL whats life without a little risk HAKAD
Lesson learned--watch your speed in a small town? He was sitting at a red light, dude. He didn't get pulled over. He was sitting at a red light. I missed that the first time I heard this song, too; but it makes the song even better once you realize that he wasn't even speeding. Despite that, I thought your analysis was excellent.
To the fans of traditional country let’s keep the music alive from elk hunter
The Year that Clayton Delaney Died...
Ton did a lot of humorous songs some are OLD DOGS, CHILDREN AND STRAWBERRY WINE, THE YEAR CLAYTON DELANY DIED, FASTER HORSES, I LIKE BEER
Try “Sneaky Snake”
I got one for heart of country the outlaws ghost riders in the sky from elk hunter
You should do a traditional country song called Somebody Hold Me by Narvel Felts please
Will banister everything burns please reaction
Check out his Ballad of $40.00

Tammy Wynette... Being Gone
Do you really need to flap your gums 3 minutes before you play the song?
Dude I got no. It's reality. It's what really happens.
