I have seen quite a few similar comments over the years so I'm just going to pin my reply here. This is why the title of the video is not 'Tom Speaks 8 Languages' but 'Tom Speaking IN 8 Languages'. While speaking a language implies you can use that language to speak, speaking IN a language just means the act of speaking is done in that language at that moment.

I started studying Spanish at 19, traveled and lived in Spain, and speak it fluently. Latin Americans often ask me if I'm Spanish. Brits I hear on the radio or TV seem to think that their pronunciation of Spanish is the correct one. Cringeworthy.

Megumi It seems like the only one he really speaks is French and Ancient Greek, both of which are commonly taught in schools (I believe French is taught before college in England?) Other than that, it's not that hard to brush up on it in your spare time.

I guess you could always say that living in Europe gives him advantage in speaking those other languages, but his Chinese! As a native Chinese myself, I've never heard any other westerners pronounce Chinese that good! Many study for years and their pronunciation might not get as good as Tom. He's just amazing!!!!

Mandarin is my first language and his pronunciation is really not that great. Just understandable at best. It’s great that he makes an effort to at least greet people in their own language though.

i have to say, he probably learnt few words when he was in China, but his pronunciation is so good, better than any foreigner who speak Mandarin at the first time.

He has good hearing, yes, and most of all, he mastered the Italian "r", which is hard to do for many English-speakers.

it's not perfect but I can understand it without subtitles, which is better than most other actors who try to speak mandarin

he's sexy in all languages!!! (btw im greek and understood nothing of what he said in ancient greek. i hope his accent is better in other languages :p )

I think he was using the classicist pronunciation, which is how it's traditionally taught in British schools. I'm not 100% sure though

AndorianBlues i really don't know.. that's not how i was taught :p we always kind of used the modern greek accent to pronounce them. what i hear him say is "oh pir thaladelon prosporon hos per /w/ar hippos eugenes" while with the given intonation id say "o filtat anðrOn prospOlon Osper /w/ar Ipos evjenIs"..does that make sense? :$ but who cares, he's awesome, thats what matters :p :p

His pronunciation in Spanish is really good too. But he learned it in Europe so it sounds like it is from Spain, really classy and beautiful

I think Ancient Greek is different than modern Greek

he could say all day "bitteschön" and i'd never get tired of it.

I have no idea what he has been saying, apart from some of the French. But he makes everything sound SO GOOD...😩🤚
