Peyton Manning and the Colts were consistently one of the best teams in the NFL, but they would never be able to achieve their ultimate goal of a Lombardi trophy until they could defeat Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. 2006 would prove to be the year that David could defeat Goliath as the Colts defeated the Patriots on the way to their first Super Bowl since the 1970 season.

    I've never understood why the patriots got rid of Vinatieri, he's a legend on that team, beloved by fans, and got them the win in two superbowls and the tuck rule game. Plus he's still an elite kicker 10 years after the trade. Don't get me wrong, Gostkowski's great, maybe even one of the best in the whole league, but Vinatieri's one of the best of all time.

  • @TheLocalLt

    @TheLocalLt

    6 жыл бұрын

    Because 1) Vinatieri couldn’t kick-off yet he was demanding top of the line money. Belichick was fed up with giving up 10-15 yards every kickoff and wasn’t going to pay Vinatieri top money while also paying a kickoff specialist. And Belichick’s left-footed punter fetish precluded him from hiring punters who could also kick-off, as most of his punters are specialists, plus again why pay Vinatieri top money just to have the punter do one of his jobs. Gostkowski could do both jobs for way less money. And 2) There was no way to know in 2006 that Vinatieri would still be a top of the line kicker in 2018. He very well may go on to be the oldest player ever, something you just can’t really bank on. Heck Belichick doesn’t even believe that Brady will stay good and wanted to keep Jimmy G this year. At the time you expected the Colts to get 4 or 5 good years out of him, and it seemed like he was very overpaid at the time (Vinatieri has turned out to be worth every penny to Indy, although he did miss the 2009 Super Bowl run which is a small blemish)

Sean Peyton is the same way. Imo the Pats should have reloaded for a last run with Brady instead of tying his hands and starting a rebuild. Brady now going to show the coaching staff that said “we could win with about 8-10 other QBs” and constantly leaked that he was “declining” that he is not in fact declining. Jettisoning vinatieiri was the correct move. Jettisoning Brady not so much

    I don't understand the persistent need to argue which quarterback is/was better, Manning or Brady, as if it actually matters. The sheer number of intangibles that affected the outcomes of their careers should give people pause before declaring one clearly better than the other. Aspects of their careers that varied and had countless effects on the games they played in (and didn't play in) included coaching, offensive lines, defense, roster depth, injuries, timely field goals (Adam Vinatieri clinched two of the Patriots' Superbowl victories), etc.

Brady couldn't even beat out Drew Bledsoe for the starting qb job and was a caretaker for his first 2 to 3 years and didn't start throwing the ball regularly until Moss came to town. Tom's career is linked to Peyton's forever but Peyton Manning stands alone. Stop acting like he was a scrub until Brady came along with a defense in Denver he carved the Patriots up special teams couldn't save him then. Montana was a better qb than Brady, you never hear anyone say "why can't we appreciate Aikman and Montana for their greatness"

    Hahaha, I remember watching this game live and my cousin and I always laugh about how big Caldwell's eyes got after he dropped that pass when no one was even lined up on him in coverage. Good times. Good times!

    The '06 Patriots were tough overachievers, but offensively deficient and devoid of playmakers. Brady nearly led this team on an incredible title run in a year where the AFC was stacked. The Colts had weapons everywhere though, and this time refused to let the Pats off the hook down the stretch.

    1:21:38 That TD pass from Brady to Gaffney back of the endzone, just a play after he should've had an easy TD pass to Caldwell that was dropped, should be on Brady's top plays of his career. Both plays he was great at moving in the pocket to keep it alive and find an open WR.

    Look even if Brady is 2-3 against manning in playoffs. His two wins were at Gillette! Payton won the three at his home stadium. One in RCA dome and Twon in Mile High. If this game was in Gillette with the patriots leaving 21-3 then Brady would have won.
