I agree - a very difficult song to choose, especially for a couple's choice. It may have gone down better with the judge's if the dance had been performed by a female celebrity and male pro dancer (as in the original there isn't a male part to this song). Thought Tom did well with the lifts, but agreed with the judge's comments. Glad Tom got to do the dance he wanted though and as Amy said, it's nice to go out on a high! A tricky week with 2 couple's choices in one show too. He has improved so much since week 1 and should feel very proud!

Oh, so beautiful!! They really sold the story, so perfectly! I want more contemporarys now. It's a dance that tells such lovely emotional stories! And this was lovely! He has improved leaps and bounds and has become a great dancer. Sure, he's no Rose, John or AJ, but there's not denying his skill. The one problem that isn't even a problem honestly is that it has more emphasis on Amy, that it cut some of Tom's participation. I mean, can't be helped, it's killed by the fact the story is about the female character, so Tom, as a guy, has to take the back seat. Undermarked if you ask me.

Technically executed exquisitely. One of the hardest things, especially for men, is allowing oneself to show your emotions. If Tom had allowed himself to do that, and shown us all what this dance meant to him, then I would have been in tears. 9

I'm glad that all the judges said it, as I felt completely the same about it. He danced it well, but it didn't make me feel anything. And I couldn't help comparing Amy to him when they were side by side, she radiates so much more emotion through every movement. And lol to Russell Crowe's video- I don't know why the show seems to be on a mission to get well wishing videos from every celebrity/singer connected to the song/dance this year rather than letting it occur naturally, it's so contrived. Bill's couple choice going viral last year, the Sugarhill gang supporting him and Janet Jackson loving it it is how it should go, surely it means more when they're not coerced into it?!

  • @swansong95

Watched this back several times, still trying to fully work out what was not quite right about it. I *think* the key problem is that the style of dance is rooted in the storytelling, and the story they are telling is one where Tom is an imagined version of a character (so, like if he were a ghost, naturally the emotional connection for the viewer is with Amy's character, the one dancing On Her Own, the one whose dream this is). The other confusing element is that Tom is not only playing that 1-dimensional character, but is also playing a version of himself: the older brother showcasing Amy as the proxy for his little sister. That is very sweet and definitely creates an emotional connection but again, the focus of the emotion is her, not him. I appreciate why he wanted to do this song but I think it would have worked better as a straight ballroom (Foxtrot/American Smooth perhaps), or even a rumba, rather than contemporary where the emotion is not just the reason we dance, but is physically so much more a part of the dance style itself. That said, I've absolutely no doubt Tom loved this and has made Carrie Hope immensely proud of herself and him, which is beautiful in itself (and probably more important to him than getting a high score!)

This was a beautiful dance and Amy's choreography was amazing as always. BUT, the song choice seriously shot them in the foot for me. As I said on Rose and Giovanni's dance last week, Couple's Choice should either show off the performer's strengths (Bill Bailey) or give us something personal and powerful (Rose). Tom's strength throughout the series has not been the gentler dances, so that is out. So we are left with expression, which could have been a good time to show Tom's acting ability off as we saw in his Paso. But this is where the song is the problem. 'On My Own' isn't about Marius as a character, and therefore isn't about showing us something about Tom. Marius in the dance is a prop for Éponine to express her pain. Now Amy was clever (as always) and didn't push herself to the front as the most important character, but this problem is still there. Throughout the dance I found myself focusing on Amy and not Tom, because the music is telling me that she is at the centre of what is being expressed. Tom/Marius is there as an object for Éponine, not as a star player. The Strictly crew really set Tom and Amy up to fail here in my opinion (Carrie having sung the song really isn't a good reason to pick a song). I'd love to see a performance of this where Amy was able to let loose and give us more of Éponine as a character, because the dance itself is beautiful. It just doesn't work for me on Strictly or as a Couple's Choice.

Amy didn't choreograph this dance, two other strictly choreographers did (I forget their names, Tom and Amy shared them on their story). You have a point about the song but I guess that's the risk in letting dancers choose their own songs (I think Tilly's song was a bad choice as well). Something I thought would be mentioned as part of Tom's choice and wasn't is that he's always wanted to play Marius and was even offered the part at one point but it clashed with a McFly tour so he turned it down.

@@Harri_Jay_Kay Ah my bad. I don't keep up with social media so I assumed it was Amy's choreography. It felt like her style! I do get why they chose the song but it didn't help Tom at all. I've been thinking about it overnight and actually it could have worked if they'd not been literal with the song and framed it around a flashback of Marius not noticing Éponine and her affection, which would have put Tom in the centre. But still Éponine would have been the real focus. It's frustrating because this dance would work in any circumstance other than a male celebrity doing it on Strictly!

Tom and Amy looked to have danced a contemporary piece but the routine looked like it was placements without any conviction or emotion. I am not a fan of "Couple's Choice" at all, especially this series, because it does not nave to be a defined style of dance. Haven's said that, Tom and Amy performed a proper contemporary dance. Tom is such a positive lad and his musicality is always exceptional (which is not surprising). He didn't disappoint me and he was a tad undermarked in my opinion. Tom handled the choreography, which wasn't easy at all, extremely well. His lines were clean and beautiful, his lifts were smooth and the amount of content was impressive. Regarding emotions, I have to disagree with the judges - Tom, for me, portrayed the character he was presenting just on point. Men, at that era, were raised in a certain way. Tom was very emotional with the right amount of self restraint. He was so emotional, so venerable, so caring but yet so noble, poised and not "hysteric". So, for me, he showed Marius's character exactly as I would have imagined Marius being presented on a stage. Regarding the dance - perfect musicality, very soft and clean movements, fantastic spins, very smooth movement, seamless transition from one step to another and outstanding partnership with Amy. I would have love to see some more complicated steps, some more lifts and jumps. All this drama regarding Tom's exit (which made me sad too, because Tom was my most favorite in the series) would not have happened (probably) if Tom would have been given a proper latin \ ballroom dance, because ballroom and latin dances, apart from being the essence of this show, are the proper litmus test, because they have very specific rules of how to move the body and how to use the body and how to translate the rhythm of the music into the movement of the body, and it cannot be opened to interpretation. My score: an 8.

I like Tom and Amy and wanted them to win the dance-off, but I think there was a fundamental problem with their choice of material. First, the song was always about the woman not the man - which cast Tom as the supporting performer, not the protagonist, not the star. Second, Tom's relationship to the emotion of this piece via his empathy with his sister is too second hand. Thirdly, the judges' reactions to contemporary in couple's choice are often a bit mixed. Shame.

Wish they'd get rid of the 'Couples Choice' category, with rare exception (Giovanni/Faye, Bill/Oti) it's just self indulgent non- dancing. So boring to watch. Reduce the number of contestants or bring in another formal ballroom or Latin dance. The show already has the show off 'showdance', and messing around for much of the other dances, in an effort to reduce hard content. Enough is enough.

What a fix the dance off was. Tom & Amy dance was absolutely gorgeous & no mistakes, they both danced their hearts out. Reis was behind the music all the way through & I was surprised although thankful that head judge Shirley would have voted them through. It really was so obvious it has made me wonder whether it has put me off watching but I have watched from the very first show. The choice of Craigs' replacement judge I feel does NOT know enough about dancing as she gave Rose a 10 even, by their own admission a mistake was made. I would love to know what others think. Tom & Amy should have taken their place, fairly, in next weeks' show.

You know that Tom has been really poor this season yeah? Which is funny as he is the only celeb with past experience in this too from stage school and doing musicals etc. The guest judge is from musicals so yeah probably marked them more on that then technical dancing, which I agree isn't great but it was musical week so kinda makes sence. And also Craig would have crushed Tom, he always gives Tom the lower scores plus is soo strict when anyone does contemporary. Also I think Shirley just says that at the end to make the couple feel better, she's done that a couple of time this series

He felt very rehearsed and as if he was anticipating each next move. The lifts were also distracting at times, as they broke the flow of the dance just a little, but well done to him for managing them. I feel really bad as I'm sure this meant a lot to him and his sister but contemporary dance needs to tell the story convincingly, without seeing the intentions behind it, and they didn't fully manage that
