Tokyo Pop - Official Re-Release Trailer
Фильм және анимация
New 4K restoration in theaters August 4.
Bleach-blonde wannabe rocker Wendy (Carrie Hamilton) is disillusioned with her life in New York City. After receiving a postcard from Japan saying “wish you were here,” she spontaneously hops on a plane to Tokyo with dreams of making it big as a singer. Quickly finding herself broke and a fish out of water, she moves into a youth hostel for gaijin (foreigners) and takes up work as a hostess at a karaoke bar. Just when she’s at her breaking point, she meets Hiro (Diamond Yukai), a rock ‘n’ roller whose band is looking for their big break. They form a romantic and musical connection and Hiro convinces Wendy to become their lead singer. Through a combination of hustle and luck, they stumble into their 15 minutes of fame, but Wendy soon comes to realize that being a gaijin rocker may be nothing more than a passing fad. An underseen gem of ‘80s American independent cinema by Fran Rubel Kuzui (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Tokyo Pop takes us on a breezy tour through bubble era Tokyo, replete with knowing nods to the city’s vibrant pop culture.

Dear Carol Burnett: thank you so much for getting this film re-mastered and re-released. I read somewhere you occasionally read the comments and you should know you have done a wonderful thing-wonderful for your daughter who loved this role and was justifiably proud of her work, and wonderful for her fans, who are so moved by this gem. You have done well for Carrie and her memory, and you have done well for many people who know and love this film, and many others who will discover and love it for the first time. Thank you, Carol Burnett!
When i tell you i wore this VHS out as a kid! My uncle brought it back for me from Japan and i was absolutely obsessed. I can't wait to see this again! Carrie is such a gem, RIP🌹

Me too and it made me move to Tokyo
Saw this movie last week in Los Angeles, it was amazing. I hope it gets more screenings. People deserve to rediscover this beautiful film.
This is a beautiful-looking movie! I never got to see it but I somehow remember it being promoted back in the day when I was a kid. I'm so happy for Carol Burnett being able to get this movie restored and re-released. The NY Times article that announced this movie's restoration as well as its history says Ms. Burnett sometimes checks KZread comments for discussions of this movie and Carrie Hamilton. If you see this comment Ms. Burnett just know that we love you and you are awesome! Thank you for bringing this movie back to modern audiences!
Just caught this at the Edinburgh Film Festival today, Fran Rubel Kuzui was there to talk to the audience. Such a delight of a film, the two main leads just exude that youthful charm and energy (hard to believe Carrie Hamilton left us at such a young age). Just a wonderful, charming, smile-inducing film

wow im very jelous! any answers you remember fran giving?
That was a cute movie from the boom years in Japan. I liked it. RIP Carrie Hamilton.
Excited for this to come out on bluray--never thought it would!
So thankful this movie was brought back, or I never would've been fortunate enough to see it. I can't say enough how blown away I was by the visuals, the vocals, and the entire beautiful storyline! Carrie was such an understated powerhouse in this film, delivering both levity and deep expression with such ease. What an all-around celebration of talent!
My college roommate from Japan turned me onto this movie in the early 90’s. I didn’t realize the actress was Carol Burnett’s daughter until recently, but I always admired her acting and singing in this movie.
Just saw this film for the first time tonight at a theater screening to coincide with the re-release. What a charming movie
This is a really solid movie and deserves more recognition. It's Lost in Translation 15 years earlier with a lot more singing.
I ❤️ TOKYO POP (1988)‼️ This was the best Japanese/American independent movie I have ever seen since KZread 2013 which was 10 years ago! It has been 35 years since TOKYO POP (1988) had a limited release in small theaters and at film festivals as well, but few months later the film was released on both VHS📼and Laserdisc📀by Warner Brothers home video formats for a very short period and soon the home video rights to TOKYO POP (1988) expired for several years without a DVD and Blu-ray debut! I would love to say to you all that TOKYO POP (1988) has been my all time favorite independent movie of the late 80s and I can finally get the official Blu-ray release by December 2023! TOKYO POP (1988) is much better to watch than LOST IN TRANSLATION (2003)! TOKYO POP (1988) is forever the best Japanese/American movie of our time! 🍿🇺🇸❤️🇯🇵🎥

Awesome, this movie has been in my top handful since 1988. I bought a used copy of the VHS from my little video store at one point and wore it out. I recorded the soundtrack onto a cassette tape and learned to sing the Japanese parts of Hiro's Song...lol. Never great, but I had a blast. We were heartbroken when Carrie passed away.
Very nice video, fam :-)
I love film! There is nothing better than film to bring back the memories of loved ones who have passed. A lovely, wonderful film starring a kooky, full of life American actress. Blessings to you Carrie Hamilton, where ever you are...🙏🌞🌟🌙🌛⛩🪐🎭🌹
