I actually damaged our toilet years ago using a pumice stone while trying to get the ring off. Not sure what I did wrong. Now it is worse looking than just the rings. We need a new toilet!

Perhaps the stone was now wet? Or you scrubbed too hard?

If you are a DIYer use sandpaper. A pumice stone is too coarse.
