I'm 73. My Chow Chow is 8. I have been a Chow owner most of my adult life. My last 3 Chows lived 13, 15 and 16 years. I hope my current guy will be around another 8 years. I had a red Chow that weighed 85 lbs which is considered large. My current Chow Chow is a shaded cinnamon that weighs 110# and is 26 inches at the withers, he's a very big boy. Socialization is very important with a dog that size. When raising a Chow you must be calm and even tempered. A Chow has a naturally defensive and protective nature. They are cautious and very discerning. When a Chow does not know you, you never approach. If he is interested in you, let him approach you. Most bites occur when a stranger wants to approach the 'cuddly' dog. A Chow sees this action as aggressive and responds accordingly. A Chow never forgives and never forgets. That's why all of the experiences that your Chow is exposed to must be positive. Having a Chow in your home is no different than another person being there. When I lay him to rest, I hope I have enough life left in me to raise one more.

this is mostly bc the far east is the area where dogs come from! chow chows are as the video say “most likely the worlds oldest dog”. so called “cat-like” breeds like most sighthounds and large spitz breeds are breed to have independent temperaments, they are call primitive bc it’s an trend seen in very old breeds. in fact the dog considered the most “cat-like” comes from african, it is called the basenji. tho, even tho a dog is cat-like, it’s important to remember, it’s not a cat. it’s still very much a dog.

This is very true. Jindi dog and all Korean breeds are highly intelligent but tend to not listen to owners they don’t respect, don’t necessarily like to socialise, can be very aggressive towards strangers without proper socialisation. However the good thing about Far Eastern breeds is that they tend to be fairly genetic illness free (minus Chinese breeds like the pug, Pekingnese, Sharpei and Chow Chow I guess).

I'll always have a soft spot for chows; my first dog ever was a chow chow. She must have been special like Camille--she was cuddly and sweet and definitely had separation anxiety if we left her alone. And her patience for kids was unmatched; she would let my baby sister crawl all over her and would simply walk away when she'd had enough. She did have her wild, independent side--her favorite pastime was escaping our backyard by climbing over our chainlink fence. Once she escaped all the way to the airport runway of a military base. Another time she jumped from the second story of our house with nothing but a mild sprain on one ankle. Man, I miss that dog.

My mom got a chow chow a year before I was born, I was raised with him from birth to 12 years old and he was incredibly sweet as well. Never bit or chased anything, used to bark at neighbors cats but after telling him no a single time he never did again. Never bit or showed aggression even when I stupidly teased him and rode on him as a toddler, just the sweetest thing. They’ll always be my favorite breed of dog! Them looking like bears definitely helps a lot too :3

My first dog was a chow, too :) I was 14 when I got him and he was truly amazing! Sweet-tempered and cuddly with us, super easy to train, and SO patient with children! The little son of a friend was learning to walk at that time and would hang on to the dog´s tail for balance while they walked the yard again and again, the dog adjusting his walking speed to those first steps of the toddler. He was fierce with other male dogs and the perfect gentleman with bitches. If somebody tried to feed him he was alright with that and took the treat majestically - but bit everyone who tried to withdraw a treat that the human had already offered him. This was of course not true for us, his family, because we could take any food out of his mouth any time it was necessary. He loved snow so much! He would roll around in it with no end, getting running flashes with joy even in old age..... He was almost 14 years old when he died. Rest in peace, my Dear.

You said it. My former mother-in-law said that *her* mom had Chow-Chows on their rural property when she was being raised there. She said they were 'mean' and not properly trained. While they will bond with the whole family, they usually have a single person who is ✨their✨ person. When I was 3-4 years old, my family adopted a female Chow. The Lion King was my favorite movie at the time, so despite her being a girl I named her Simba. She immediately became attached to me and I to her. I have been legally blind since birth (I can see somewhat, but not well), and my parents always told me that it seemed as though somehow Simba knew I was different. We had a large property with quite a few other animals (sheep, cows, rabbits, cats, and a couple smaller dogs), and anytime I was outside wandering around, Simba was right there along with me as if she was my escort/protector. She was my dearest friend and we were always together. She never once bit me or any of my family. A few years later, my family had decided to move. My parents told me we couldn’t take Simba with us; we were moving to a regular residential property and Simba was used to having space and freedom to roam around (she often loved to go swimming in the canal behind our property. They told me she wouldn’t be happy at the new home, so the buyer of our big property had decided to keep her too. I was devastated and begged in vain for them to reconsider. They didn’t change their minds. I didn’t speak to them for quite awhile after the move, and deep down I have never fully forgiven them in that regard. I am now 30 years old, and I have never forgotten that beautiful, incredible dog. I don’t even have a photo of her. She lives only in my memories. I can only hope the rest of her days were joyful ones. I love you, Simba.

I wish you didn't have to go through that pain...my mom brought a beautiful baby boy (Indian pariah) to our home when I was little but my father was against it so after a few days mom returned him. I still feel sad whenever I think about him...but compared to your pain it's nothing. Cause now I have a baby girl for years and I know how much devastated I will be if I have to let her go. Hope she found peace and happiness during that period of time and you get to meet her in afterlife if it exists for real.

Had a friend who had a male that was "Mr. Chill." He was never bothered by anything, and was grate with kids and other dogs. Then the friend wanted to get him a girlfriend so they could have little baby Chow Chows. The girlfriend was the poster puppy for "Psycho Crazy Rip Your Face Off Puppy." She attacked and nearly killed the male Chow (who was twice her size) when there was no "Trigger." My friend, who was never afraid of ANY animal, was terrified of this "Puppy." The breeder, after a threat of a lawsuit and formal complaint to the AKC, took the would be girlfriend back and my friend never tried to find another.

Our Chow, Bear (a very fitting name), is very chill. He was socialized as a pup, my husband took him to a camp he was teaching where the kids loved on him & he got ALL the treats. Makes a huge difference in a Chow's temperament. He has glaucoma, we had to get his eyes removed as meds were no longer keeping his eye pressure down. But he has adjusted very well, he's still super-chill & a very good boy, plus all the ladies in the neighborhood love him - his sweet face is irresistible & he loves getting petted & hugged 🥰 He does well getting groomed, too, just don't touch his butt - that's his only "NO" zone & he'll let you know quick 🤣🤣 Other than being stubborn about coming back inside, he's a great dog & prior Chows my husband has owned have also been good. You just learn their cues & they learn to trust you through your patience. ❤️

Agreed! I live next door to a barking dog. My neighbours have a big(ish) house, but on a small suburban property with a mostly concrete yard. All of their neighbours are very close in proximity, and there are at about 5 of them (including us, and not including those across the street). For some reason they thought "You know what breed of dog would be great here? An Australian Shepherd!" A medium breed that's known for barking loudly and excessively when bored or under-exercised. He barks almost non-stop, he's also aggressive towards strangers and other dogs, including my small Shih Tzu. All they do is yell at him when he's misbehaving and kick him outside, which is all the damn time. They barely give the dog the time of day to give him attention, let alone train him! This was a problem, so then they thought: "let's get another Australian Shepherd!" So, now they have two dogs they barely have time for. Why are people like this?!

Personally, it's a little surprising to hear Chow Chows are difficult. Growing up, I had a friend whose family dog was a Chow Chow named Alfred. Every time I came to visit, Alfred would be chilling out in their front yard, soaking in the sun, and he would bark at me, but he did it more as an alarm to the family that someone was coming. When Alfred did this to me the first time I came to visit my friend, his mother came out to greet me and said, "Don't worry, he's harmless." And I responded, "Yeah, I can tell. As I approached, he barked while lying motionless on the ground. He didn't even sit up to properly bark at me. I've never seen a dog do that. Is he okay?"

I have two rescues. Re-homing an adult chow certainly takes a LOT of patience. Those first trips to the vet and groomer are challenging to say the least. You can't get emotional, you have to be patient and calm, and you can't let the stubborn little critters beat you. Patience, understanding, and being more stubborn than they are is certainly important. =) Good for you rescuing a chow! How long did it take yours to acclimate to their new home?

I have many memories of us laying on the porch together with my head on her belly as she would listen to me read to her. All she wanted to do was lay in the sun or in the doorways. She was a great dog to have growing up and would always give me kisses when I hugged her.

We had a female chow chow whom we wanted to get a companion for. However what was available to us are male pure breed chow puppies that are similar to Camille in the video. We did research first if getting another chow would work for us. We noted that male chows are more aggressive than females and had to be careful with that. We picked the one that snubbed us (because our female is sassy and snobby and we love her for that). When that male chow grew up, he became the sweetest cream cake who just loves us to cuddle with him. He is also very sweet to the female chow and would groom her everyday. He would also just lay down beside her. His true aggression showed when he encountered cats and rats. 😅 Camille is so behaved! She deserves all the treats! My female chow always tries to fight the vet and groomers (but is snobby to strangers), she even shocked the groomer when she opened the locked cage with her snout. 🤣

One blue male with a energetic demeanor, and a cream female very reserved almost shutdown. His name was Buddy and that name stuck, they had named her Snowball (almost all white) and there was no way the name was going to remain. Since they were brother and sister, I decided Buddy and Sissy...that lasted three weeks...her name became - Sassy. Brown eyed Buddy and yellow eyed Sassy. She died at age 6 (cancer) and 6 yrs later Buddy will still not sit in her seat.

Both that dog and Camille seem very docile, but that dog would not hesitate to maul you if it thought you were trying to invade its home. Don't be fooled, but also don't be terrified that every dog is going to attack you. Camille is proof that not every dog is the same as the other members of its breed.

He prefers to walk alone in a trail to just sniff and look around. He’s my third chow. I grew up with two male chow chows, definitely different personalities. They were rescued, therefore we didn’t have much say but I was also 5 years old & they lived to almost 16 years. Very intelligent & protective dogs.
