Tobin & Christen Discuss the World Cup Quarterfinals with Ali Riley & Leah Williamson ⚽️ | Episode 6

Спорт

Tobin and Christen do a deep dive on the 8 teams who played in the World Cup quarterfinals and the 4 teams remaining in the tournament. In this international episode, they celebrate the countries that were eliminated from competition and discuss what made them so great. Then, they shine a light on the two upcoming matches and what they expect to see. Later, Tobin sits down with the captain of England’s national team, Leah Williamson, to discuss the current state of their program, how winning the Euros helped prepare the team for the World Cup, her outlook on England’s upcoming semifinal match with Australia and what it’s like having an injury during the tournament. Finally, Christen and Tobin are joined by their friend, teammate and captain of New Zealand’s national team and Angel City FC, Ali Riley, fresh off her appearance at the World Cup. Ali tells incredible stories about the New Zealand national team nearly missing their opening match against Norway due to traffic, the difference between her first World Cup 16 years ago and her fifth World Cup this year, Tobin accidentally running a 5k in slides, playing in an abusive environment and making the hard to decision to do something about it and so much more. And, as always, community questions, two semifinal predictions and Tobin’s Top Things!

    Tobin & Christen = YOU KNOW THAT IF VAR CALLS REFEREE TO SEE SOMETHING means that 4 var refs not agree with referee decision , so YOUR 2-1 VICTORY AGAINST SPAIN with 2 soft penaltys at 2019WC was a rob . please you have the dignity to recognize that this victory wasn't fair ,so spain deserved more in 2019WC ,and was posible that what we are seing now of spain we would have seen it in 2019

    "Winning does not make abuse okay!" Amen, Tobin! 100%! I can't help but think of the US Women's Gymnastics team under the Karolyis. So many Olympic medals over more than two decades, but at what cost? Hundreds of athletes, Olympians, college athletes, and local club athletes were abused because the entire system was unhealthy and abusive. Thank you for making the important point that success never justifies abuse. Love you, Christen and Tobin! The show is amazing.

    The Spain Coach is abusive, meanwhile Mourinho and Alex Ferguson and just about most other top male football manager says hold my beer, you want real abuse, how bout the time Ferguson threw a shoe directly at David Beckham, I guess women have a much lower tolerant of what is abuse compared to men, sometimes it's hilarious watching these women podcast talk about things, give the impression that they are from Venus and men from Mars, oh wait, there's already a book written about that concerning relationships.

A side note on the incredible Colombia support by their fans, I heard there are currently many young Colombians attending universities in Australia, and they certainly added to the joyous celebration at the World Cup. Colombia was so much fun to watch. Their unified passionate singing of their national anthem was moving. They played with such courage. I hope to see the Colombian Federation increase the funding and support for their women's teams.

I was at a casino watching along with about 200-300 people, and during the whole penalty shoot out, it was so loud I couldn't hear my own thoughts. I was in the stadium to watch the Matildas vs France match. It was amazing! Aus is a rugby and AFL (Aussie rules football) nation (very male focused) but the whole nation is now supporting the Matildas. The detractors of women's soccer say it doesn't bring in $ but it's estimated it will bring in around 5 and a half billion to the economy. And as for no one watching Women's football, 37% of the nation watched the game (and that's the figures from only one TV channel so it's actually higher). I nearly cried when I saw young boys wearing shirts with a woman's name on it. Never thought I'd see the day. Women's soccer is here to stay. Just amazing. Carn Straya! (C'mon Australia!) Btw I'm Australian but whoever wins in the Aus vs Eng game, it will still be a win for Women's football.

    There are lots of female sports in Australia: football, rugby, volleyball, tennis, cricket, netball. Most sports are now played by men and women. Netball is about the only single-sex sport and that is female-only.

  • @jbear4240

    @jbear4240

    9 ай бұрын

    @@golden.lights.twinkle2329 You kinda missed the point here. There are women's sports in Australia but they are not as supported or their players as well known as the men's. 10 years ago only 8% of sports articles featured women. That number is now higher but in no way comparable to men's. Women get less sponsorship deals as well and/or have difficulty securing them. Just ask our netball team. The Matildas scored a double whammy - they brought attention to a code which has traditionally struggled against three other football codes AND women soccer players. Women's football didn't use to exist and now it does. But existing is not enough. Thriving as much as the men's game should be the aim.

    This WC has been so bittersweet for me as a Spaniard. I want my country to win, but at the same time I feel bad rooting for them because the Federation will use this as a way of saying they were right in the first place. I can’t watch their games without thinking about those great players like Mapi or Patri that have been giving their all to the NT for years and they won’t get to enjoy the results if they do end up winning.

    Finally getting around to catching up on these episodes and I really appreciated Ali Riley's story about their match against Norway. You don't usually hear the events leading up to the match starting and with how chaotic it was I find it more impressive that their team was able to rise to the occasion and get that first victory for their nation. I wish her luck in the rest of her career.
