What makes Leah Williamson so good? | Analysis | Women's Super League

Спорт

Leah Williamson is back! I wanted to make a video reminding everyone why she is such an important player for club and country since we haven't seen her play for almost a year. So what separates her from other centre backs? And what does her playing style entail?

    Real about the final. When Walsh was marked heavily by Spain in the Euros, Leah was KEY and it was so overlooked. Her long balls and dribbling were one of the only things giving Spain a hard time that day. So exciting to see her back.

    In an interview with the two of them Keira Walsh and Leah Williamson talked about 'speaking the same language' when it comes to their game and their football heroes. It's so evident in the way they both play that they just love the game and understand it and read it on an insane level. Williamson coming off at half time in the west ham game showed perfectly how in control she is of the game. So excited for what she can do this season, and for a Wubben-Moy and Williamson pairing which I think will bring Lotte up to her best. Awesome analysis as always!

    Williamson brings a calmness to her game which oozes confidence and control, and Arsenal definitely lacked that when she went off. Walsh and Williamson are both fantastic players! I think Ilestedt will feel hard done by a little bit since she's hardly put a foot wrong all season, but Williamson and Wubben-Moy seem to be the preferred pairing

    What an excellent assessment of this player… I knew she was top class and a game changer and Orchestrator…but would not know how to dissect it as you did. Serena Weigman….a twin soul in this respect…recognised her innate skills and reading of the game…when everyone else couldn’t understand her appointment as lioness captain at 23 yrs old. Weigman is a supreme tactition, and spotter of talent and maker of ‘teams’…She also admired Leah for very mature media facing abilities… and intellect (you didn’t mention that)….she was/is studying to be anAccountant.. that should tell you something…about her accuracy and foresight !!!…In addition to all of this , she is passionately loyal and honest … which is probably why it is virtually useless to tempt her with ‘mere’ cash to move elsewhere!!!👌….( not on at all)…NB… Jonas Eiedeval , is totally fortunate to have Leah …and others on this team(should have played Leah in second half of that game)… His tactics are below par to say the least!!!🤬… Apilogies for long Comment… But it was because of your very accurate and much needed praise for a uniquely talented footballer ..Thankyou so much👏👏👌👍

    I love watching Leah play CB. Imagine Neville only playing Leah six minutes in 2019 World Cup. Every time I watch Alex Morgan’s goal in that semifinal I wonder if Leah would’ve beaten her to the ball if she’d been in. 2023 was supposed to be Leah’s World Cup as she was 26 and in her prime. She’ll be 30 in 2027, Lucy will be 35 and Millie 33 (both with knee issues) so who knows if they’ll be on the pitch with her. For context Morgan is 34 and left off the USWNT for this round and most likely won’t be part of the Olympic squad.

    I remember her saying her family flew out for every 2019 WC game but she only played 6 minutes, and I was so excited to watch her in the 2023 World Cup off the back of winning the Euros and Finalissima. But I feel like 30 is still in her prime, albeit at the tail end of her prime (I'd say 27-31 are typically the prime years for a CB). I still think she has a lot to offer come the 2027 World Cup, so hopefully she'll be fit to play that.

    Thank you, I'm glad these videos help you understand the game! In terms of covering the NWSL, my knowledge of it isn't great, so I probably wouldn't cover it just yet. I'd be more inclined to cover USWNT games. Players of interest would have to be Rose Lavelle for me. I think Hayes will suit the USWNT well, seems like she's able to give her players freedom to express themselves with a pretty loose structural setup, this I think will really enhance the natural talent of the USWNT players since there's a lot of it.

    Unironically love a powerpoint. Dumb question, but what happens if Leah loses the ball while she's dribbling up and is already above the midfield? Does her joining the attack only work normally because the defenders behind her are fast enough to fill-in for her if she's caught out of position?

  • @ShadowFootballYT

    @ShadowFootballYT

    3 ай бұрын

    Perhaps I should have mentioned this in the analysis, normally Lia Walti will drop back to cover for her whenever she goes forward. But usually Williamson will make a calculated decision on when to dribble through, she doesn't do it too often, but it's insane how she has that as a skillset and can pull it out whenever she wants. Having played as a holding midfielder, one of the things you'll constantly practice is not losing the ball, and she very rarely ever loses it.

    I'm very interested to see Arsenal line up in a 4-4-2. I think Russo's workrate is immense, but often times it leaves her team without a focal point in attack. Having someone like a Blackstenius constantly run in behind when Russo drops back theoretically would work. If you're familiar with the men's game, Russo reminds me of Wayne Rooney, who always had a strike partner. I would love to see that with Arsenal and Russo.

  • @RunawayForce

    @RunawayForce

    @@RunawayForce I think they did yeah, the most recent game was vs Brighton, but Russo started at 10 with Blackstenius as a lone forward. In terms of creativity in the final third, I think James has the most creative potential, but she does have moments of tunnel vision and poor decision making. In terms of consistency of creative ability, I'd probably put Lauren Hemp down as the best one

  • @pumelelabilibane

    @pumelelabilibane

    3 ай бұрын

    @ShadowFootballYT na lauren hemp for me is more of a goal scorer more than creative player. When I say a creative player I mean a person who can find pass. Like even if you look at the world cup who was the glue for that england attack, even in the nation's league. I think she started once in nations league n got injured and england struggled to create clear cut chances, but then she came back against Netherlands n Scotland this girl is always involved in goals n assist n yes you might say lauren hemp is more mature in her decision making,but this year lj has stepped up big time in her game. But if you would bet on someone to create something out of nothing it's lj

    I highlighted her in the video saying that she would watch the space instead of the striker as a CB which isn't the best thing to do. I think Barcelona in general has been relatively untroubled at the back since other teams are so focus on how to stop them, they often panic during attack and rush their shots just to have an attempt at goal (usually not a good one). I think Engen was really tested vs Benfica in that 4-4 game and was found out a few times
