Back then it is only because people were suffering in ques that they voted for UNP otherwise the majority naive people of SL didn't bring UNP to power with understanding and farsightedness. Whenever the economy gets improved by the UNP, they get fooled to nationalism and to talks and ways of their kind and bring the so called socialists. The situation has become worse by now with more and more upperclass people having left the country thus leaving the country under control of the wishes of the naive " baiyyas". This is what happened during the 75 years.

JRJ Was a Class Act. We miss people of that nature. Japan sent a representative to his funeral and that representative openly cried. Japan gave us Jaya container terminal at the Port of Colombo and it was named after JRJ. It still remains the largest container terminal in Sri Lanka an fully owned by the people. He was a great man and never made money for himself.

But it is a shortsighted view to blame only one party, when the UNP under so called ‘father of the nation’ DS (who hated the estate tamils) disenfranchised tamils of Indian origin, and under JR saw the destruction of the Jaffna library under racialists such as Gamini Dissanayake and destruction of the country under UNP racists such as Cyril Matthew in the 83 riots. Of course, the UNP even turned on the sinhala majority during their actions during the 87-89 insurrection, as did the JVP although they were not fixated on race. Meanwhile, the ITAK and FP under Tamil racial supremacists such as GG Ponnambalam and SJV Chelvanayagam (educated fools) sowed the seeds from 1939 onwards for the coming crisis. To pretend this race based curse prevalent in Sri Lanka to this day is uniquely an SWRD/SLFP problem is to gloss over history, and frankly delusional. All parties including latterly the Muslim ‘representatives’ are to blame for our sorry mess.

A statue of Hon JRJ stands tall and revered by the people of Japan for his memorable speech in San Francisco in favour of Japan, when the whole world, condemned Japan.

I do not know how many people will understand this. He ridicules the American Democracy. He is stating that if a presidential candidate in US gets 51.3% of the votes should hopefully win. However, this does not always happen look at 2016, Hillary 48.2 and Trump 46.1. He also states the riches of our history, stating that US is of very recent origin compared to his motherland. Citing better than history professors of modern times where that history is recorded. He makes the audience laugh, even Frank Sinatra, 'My Way' and one has to see what a meaningful song that is. Most of all, he said these things not in Colombo at his Presidential House. He said it in the White House when he was hosted by Mr. Reagan. That is the class we can not even dream of now.

What a great speech by our very own President J. R. Jayawardana! Such humour...Alas! I doubt whether we will ever have such leaders we can be proud of, look up to ever again.

That diplomacy and class.Two legends!

What a class act by JR. entire speech off the cuff, no readings from prepared notes. His wide knowledge of history, music, politics , and his sense of humour, put the American president in second place. Which other leader of SL can boast of such attainments, and hold his own in the presence of world leaders ? He was so humble despite his greatness. I remember how he visited the ministry office in Ward place, just a few meters away from his home, when he was the minister of higher education while being the president of the country. Sadly though, he did not receive the last respects and a decent farewell he deserved as an ex-president, during the reign of CBK. Does any one have similar footage of his speech he gave in favour of Japan, after japan's atrocities in WW 2 ? Japan has been ever so grateful, and all the aid since given to SL was in honour of and in gratitude towards JR 's speech in their favour.

@@Rose-dh3ec, you are a JR hater, sinhalese mobs attacked innocent tamils, provoked by the killing of 13 soldiers in jaffna by ltte. This is not the first time it happened and JR had nothing to do with those attacks. In our areas, most of the mobs and gangs who attacked innocent tamils comprised of jvpiers and Slfpiers.However i agree with you that he was wrong to have done nothing to stop the killings.

The younger generation should watch this video. They must learn that Sri Lanka too had great leaders. JRJ,...what an amazing personality ! If he had continuesly ruled Sri Lanka for 15/20 years our Country would have been a highly developed nation. He also achieved everything while preserving democracy.

Sri Lanka is a country evolving backward since the 80s. As much as we see the towering personality of president JR is no match for simpleton politicians we find today, I also have to say that the down grading of everything in this country over time has his vision and decisions to be blamed on most parts.
