@@Rose-dh3ec You misunderstood. I thank Regan Libary, because nowadays we do not have much footage about our good old days. (I am Sri Lankan) Second thing: I do not like WAR, but I know it is necessary when some other parties are uncontrolled. Last : I like only few leaders such as JFK, Lincoln, Sir John Kothalawala, and Sir Winston Churchill. Rest is not my favourite, but I like history channels.

It is another horrendous act by President J.R. did in his life by separating a baby elephant from its herd & bringing her all the way to the US!! Finally, she died in isolation!!

Its true he used racism to keep his power towards the end. But i think he's definitely better than present day politicians

I respect your belief. But I do not agree with you. For me, wrong is wrong right is right. I never try to justify a person's wrong actions. if I steal I am a thief, I am not going to say a lot of people steal so what. also, JR's actions are lead to a 26year war country that is never the same again.

I don't care what religion or political party you are in but I'm 101% against Sri Lanka gifting baby elephants to other country leaders. Just because it's free and you can do it never take a baby elephant away from it's mother. Sri Lankans are very good at this and it as to be stopped. A year old baby elephant was gifted to Pakistan in 1985 and that poor elephant went through the most horrific life ever. Thanks to singer Cher that poor elephant was saved. The people of Sri Lanka didn't gift that poor baby elephant but you you did.

Sadly, Jayathu passed away 73 days later in the Washington Zoo. The cause of death was an allergic reaction to her infant formula. 😭😭😭😭

I'm quite saddened that Jayatu was relegated to a zoo! Shame on the American sense of love for the Mute World. The president of Sri Lanka should've gifted a Beagle or a German Sheppard or some such dog; perhaps a dog might have been adopted by the White House as presidential orphan. Jayatu should've been gifted to indigenous people. She'd been received with much love!

JR is the best President in Sri Lanka. There are hundreds of thousands of people living successfuly because of his open economy.

As person who lived in these times I don't remember anything good out of this show. JR's foreign policy was such that he fell off with India - our neighbour & long standing friend. He and his PM antoganised Indira Gandhi and the result was that (1) India trained LTTE/ Terrorists..gave them shelter, (2) encroached our territorial boundaries..dropped dahl and then (3) forced 13th amendment on us. None came to our rescue. Now we live with useless provincial councils that cost the most after our defence budget. That's what he gave this country ultimately with his big shows. ..not to mentioned 83 riots...forcing the country into two civil wars incl..one in south. Cant imagine what more damage he could have caused if not for his premier who kicked him off when he tried a third term getting Lional Jayathilka and Merril Kariyawasam to propose. This guy is a historical disaster.

Baby Elephant From Sri Lanka Dies at Zoo By Martin Weil August 31, 1984 A 20-month-old elephant, presented to President Reagan at the White House in June by the president of Sri Lanka as a state gift, died yesterday at the National Zoo, provoking expressions of dejection and disappointment from Pennsylvania Avenue to Embassy Row. Despite what were described as vigorous and determined efforts to save her, the animal named Jayathu, which means Victory, died in the elephant house 73 days after Reagan formally received her on the lawn of the Executive Mansion from Sri Lankan President Junius R. Jayewardene. The precise nature of the ailment that caused the young Asiatic elephant to shed almost all of the 120 pounds she had added to her 300-pound frame since she arrived here, was not immediately known. An autopsy was under way last night at the zoo hospital, zoo officials said. For the past two weeks, they said, the elephant -- an orphan that had been found in a deep pit in her native land -- had been ill with symptoms that included diarrhea and a depressed appetite for the milk-based formula on which she was being reared. Other formulas were tried, but to no avail. "President and Mrs. Reagan have heard the news" about the elephant, "and of course were very sorry," a White House spokesman said last night. Ernest Corea, ambassador of Sri Lanka, noted that while "all animals are special" to the residents of his Asian island nation, elephants are "very special." He described himself as "very saddened" by the death of Jayathu. He said one embassy staff member wept and all others reacted with "quite great sorrow" on learning of the fate of the 3-foot-tall elephant, which had been presented June 18 during a state visit by Sri Lankan President Jayewardene. The elephant -- a symbol of the political parties of both Reagan and the Asian leader -- is the only animal privileged to carry the casket of holy relics of Lord Buddha on sacred holidays in Sri Lanka. Ambassador Corea said he was "somewhat puzzled" by the death, asserting that the mortality rate among captive elephants in Sri Lanka is extremely low. Zoo director Michael Robinson, who described himself as "personally grieved" to lose Jayathu, said the zoo's veterinarians and keepers had worked around the clock with "extraordinary dedication, skill and love" to save "this charming animal to which I and many zoogoers had become so attached." Jayathu was sent here from a Sri Lankan elephant orphanage, where she had lived since being rescued from a deep pit into which she had fallen. She arrived before the formal presentation and was on exhibition from June 15 through Tuesday. At that time, zoo officials said, after two weeks of treatment for what appeared to be an allergic reaction to her infant formula, she was refusing all food and drink. The elephant house was closed, and a tube was inserted into her stomach so she could receive nourishment directly. Through the tube, Jayathu was given glucose, vitamins, electrolytes and fluids, Robinson said. Wednesday morning, he said, there were signs that the efforts of veterinarians and keepers were meeting with success. "We thought . . . she was looking very much better," Robinson said. But, he added, Jayathu's condition then appeared to "spiral down," and at 4:45 p.m. yesterday, despite efforts to save her that were "above and beyond the call of duty," she died. The zoo has two other Asiatic elephants and one African elephant. African elephants are larger, with noticeably larger ears. In Sri Lanka, an island off the southeast coast of India, orphan elephants are fed with formula until they reach an age of between three and five years, Robinson said. After being lynched from her family and seeing them butchered, Jayathu will be having a good and happy life here in Washington...until she dies aged 20 months due to an improper diet and spending the bulk of her life beaten and in chains - That's what President Reagan meant to say.

JR Jayawardene was successfully taking the Country forward when all opposition parties led by the SLFP tried to topple the popular government by organizing the July 1980 islandwide strike. JR Jayawardene dealt with the strikers firmly. He did it within a democratic framework . Today ( 2022 ) there are strikes everyday , but our leaders cannot tackle them despite being bogus democrats.
