I’ve been obsessed with Latin percussion and am here to learn something new. I realized that I’m familiar already with some of the rhythms; most likely from the Grateful Dead’s live recordings. It’s called a ghatam and is extremely intricately made for that. A normal matka can’t replicate this.

Yes they specifically made for music , they use copper or brass as filling . These pots were called as "Ghatam"

It is the heart and soul of Hindus given down to Hindus and been experimented by Hindus for ages, if we try to own a pop music song, would the pop artist allow it? Why? I can understand if you are saying the musicianship is at its peak here. What has bhakti got to do with a Thani avarthanam? I am willing to bet my left nut that TM Krishna will agree with me. The composition might have religious connotations for you. But the whole concert is an exploration of art. For crying out loud, the venue is a goddamn church. It is pretty obvious that bhakti is way down the list of priorities for TMK and Co. here. You've got to understand that I am not as caustic in real life as I am portraying myself now. But I've had enough of 'bhakthi' being forced down on me when I just want to revel in one of the best forms of music in this world.

The word bhakti does not have anything to do with religion/ god. Bhakti means devotion to anything. TM could not have created this music without being devoted to it.

Raghuram Krishnan That is a strange definition of bhakti. No one talks about the bhakti aspect of ilayaraja, beethoven and led zeppelin. I could say that all of them were devoted to their music. Is their music bhakti laden as well? Or is bhakti exclusive to carnatic music? The only thing I can accept/find acceptable is that bhakti IS a valid raga bhava. However that does not give it any intrinsic value over any other bhava. What I find distasteful, is people putting the bhakti label on any carnatic performance that sounds good.

What a wonderful concert with a beautiful voice and ghatam!!! Hope good sense prevails on Mr. TMK so he stops hurting all his fans and followers with irresponsible views on Hindu cultures.

Those are very responsible views, he is only pointing out that in this diverse Hindu culture how Brahmanical culture alone is becoming dominant and entirely destroying other cultures and traditions especially that of lower cast.
