TM Krishna & The Jogappas: Part One

Музыка

A unique concert featuring Carnatic vocalist TM Krishna in collaboration wth The Jogappas, a trans-gender community of musicians. The energy, excitement and emotion of their collective performance is breathtaking. As Krishna puts it, this musical experiment is not a jugalbandi or fusion. This is Part One of a two-part video. Watch, listen and be amazed.

When Lord Ram was sent to exile for 14 years .. the whole of Ayodhya followed him till one point where the Lord stopped and asked the "men " and "women " to go back to Ayodhya. They all listened to their favourite Ram . The only people who were left behind were the transgenders . They questioned Ram .. where do they go ? As neither were they men nor women . The Lord asked them to go to Saundatti Renuka Yellamma who gives refuge to all Udho Yellamma. Love Choudki padas Thank you for sharing and spreading

This is so radical. I never thought any Indian classical musician could do that. T M Krishna puts his career on a brink here, to uphold the rights of LGBT people and make a very strong statement. My respect for him has increased manifold. And to do something that radical in India, well, it's very brave. I am sure, 99% of the big names in Indian classical music circle would back off such a thing fearing opposition from the traditionally conservative and anti-LGBT Indian classical music Rasikas. Hats off to T M Krishna for this. God bless him.

Keshav Bimbraw : It may not be fair to assume that most other classical musicians will back out of such an initiative. Indian society doesn't despise or scoff at the trans community. Most classical musicians are very inclusive and worship the music they learn and produce and consider it larger than life itself. Most musicians agree that our classical arts developed from the ancient folk art forms and do hold the folk arts in high esteem. Whether this music appeals to them or not is the point of contention here.

  • @bimbrawkeshav

Well, we have a difference of opinion here. Or, maybe, we have interacted with different sort of Indian classical musicians. I could never dare to talk about LGBT community in front of my teacher(s) back in India. I once discussed this with a performer. She was like 'Cheee' (her expression was as if I shit in front of her). And. then came alienation phase, when I was considered to be 'one of them' and cast off. I am not sure about Carnatic musicians, but Hindustani musicians have this big cultural responsibility to act in a certain way and associate with a certain group of people or their reputation would be affected. 'Indian society doesn't despise or scoff at the trans community.' - I wonder which part of India you are from (with all due respect). In the north, I have seen a stigma associated with the trans community. Last month, I saw a video of two transgender women being beaten up in premises of a gurudwara in rural Punjab just for being there. I have observed some of my own relatives making fun of and using derogatory terms for trans people. Therefore, T. M. Krishna's 'statement' here is not just significant, it is also super brave and radical, and I don't think MSS or M Balamurali Krishna or Pt. Ravi Shankar or Emani Shankar Sastry or Ud. Vilayat Khan would have done it since it would have ruined their reputation.

Carnatic music is universal and belongs to every Indian especially South Indians. It should not become a personal property of a few families. This art form was originally developed by the Non Brahmins of South India. M S Subbulakshmi its is non Brahmin Tamil Shanmugha Vadivu from Madurai. Purandadasa and Kanaka dasa too were non Brahmins.Let's not allow a handful to brand it or patent it as their private intellectual property. Kudos to TM Krishna for popularising the music to all have nots or those who cannot access it. Congratulations TM Krishna for bringing all sections of Hindus for unifying through carnatic music. A great human being you are and God bless you. Jai Shri Ram. Jai Bharat mata.

I have been to South India 3x for the Carnatic music season in December, which was a great experience, but I never ventured out of the Carnatic music scene there, so I have not heard or even heard about the Jogappas music. Wonderous. Like nothing I've ever heard. Thank you (from Canada) to all who performed, presented and archived this
