Strictly about quality, lenses provide "*optical* quality" while "image quality" is from the camera sensor, post light-data acquisition into *image-formation*. They are intentionally having "imperfections", on top of the imposed optical design from Nikon. It's the ideal pricing that implies a cine-grade optic. Jake have even mentioned the reasons behind this pricing. There are more clean-looking lenses on the market that will likely better suit taste and need of those not wanting an intentionally retro/vintage optically looking set of optics.

I don't think the light sources in the creative footage really shows anything near their full potential. The Nikon G series glass that (I think but could be wrong) these are based on is slightly biased towards magenta hues and has a really nice focus roll off. I found they did a good job of rendering skin tones while resolving up to and beyond 8K (I had zero complaints with my D810). I could see them doing well in an action feature or even for commercial jobs where they could be a great middle ground between something super-clean like a supreme prime and more classic looking options. Personally I really love the Nikon Glass and I could see these being a good buy for someone looking for something less 'out there' than a set of S4i's.

Rehoused-lens projects and initiatives are rarely (to not say never) made with the help of the original manufacturer company. It "mostly" comes down to porting the internal glass elements into a cine-housing, with more or less aspects depending on the rehousing.

The pricing on TLS is close enough to Atlas anamorphic lenses ($9,000) that TLS doesn’t make economic sense for me as a filmmaker. Sigma cine series makes more sense at the $4,000 range for those of us who cannot yet afford anamorphic lenses. I don’t know what market gap TLS lenses fill in the cine glass marketplace. The produce nice images, but so do Sigma cine primes and Atlas anamorphics. Maybe a Sigma cine vs. TLS comparison? Perhaps in such a comparison the TLS lenses will reveal their value proposition for image quality as both seem to be built well and both are full frame and available in PL mount. Excellent review CVP. 👍

I don't think you can really compare Anamorphics with spherical tbh. Sigma are stellar for the price, higher resolving and cleaner, which some may prefer, some may not! However, one big difference between them is servicing and build. The Sigma's are built well, but not to the standard of the Vega's IMO. They are also a pain to shim and not as easy to get serviced globally. Our lens tech who's one of the best in the UK can only do so much before they have to go back to Japan for Sigma to fix. TLS will be far easier as I mention in the video. Jake

@@CVPTV Hi Jake. I hope your day is going well. I didn’t know that people were having trouble servicing Sigma cine lenses. I’ll have to look into that and check with Duclose in L.A. since I operate out of L.A. - Roger Deakins (cinematographer for Blade Runner 2049, etc.) likes shooting spherical glass and then cropping for letterbox formatting, but this from what I understand is not a common practice amongst feature film cinematographers that can afford to shoot high budget lenses. But please let me know if I’ve been misinformed. It seems, myself included, that in filmmaking communities a lot of filmmakers want to shoot anamorphic but simply cannot afford it, so we compromise and shoot spherical glass and crop. (But I don’t speak for all filmmakers by any means, these are just my observations.) I doubt many filmmakers would turn down a set of Arri Master anamorphics for their next project, but I’m sure there are some out there who would pass on the opportunity. There is also a market for anamorphic adapters for those who cannot shoot native anamorphic. Many filmmakers (beginners like myself) cannot afford both spherical and anamorphic sets of lenses. I cannot even afford a full set of PL mount spherical primes at the moment, much less a set of anamorphics. If I could afford to shoot anamorphic I would, but I shoot Xeen and Sigma spherical PL mount cine lenses as a compromise. Thus, when a spherical lens is close in price to good to anamorphic glass, for me, I’d rather skip the spherical and go anamorphic. There are anamorphics below $9,000 but their image results don’t appeal to me. I shoot only narrative films at the moment, no commercials and no documentaries. However some people don’t like anamorphics, like Roger Deakins who in his own words cannot stand focus breathing, lens artifacts, and lens flares, unless he is looking for an intentional special effect. I am only one filmmaker in a sea of filmmakers. I hope to go anamorphic someday Lord willing, even if it means shooting an entire feature with a single focal length anamorphic lens. I simply prefer the flattering compression on a person’s face that an anamorphic lens provides, with their ability to also show more of a character’s environment. One lens style isn’t “better” than the other in my view, spherical and anamorphic are just different flavors. If I were shooting a documentary, I’d prefer a spherical wide range zoom, but I only shoot narrative films in controlled environments at the moment. I hope that my comments are received in the respectful manner that they are intended. CVP provides amazing content and that is why I’m a subscriber. Your lens reviews are amazing and thorough. I sincerely appreciate everyone’s hard work at CVP and I look forward to watching more of your videos. 😊👍

@@CVPTV Hi Jake. I hope your day is going well. I just got off the phone with Duclos Lenses in Los Angeles (who also sells and services TLS) in addition to Angenieux, Cooke etc. They said they’ve never had a Sigma cine lens that they couldn’t repair due to build quality. (However naturally if someone drops a lens, that could be a different issue unrelated to manufacturer build quality.) They also said they’ve never had to send a Sigma cine lens to Japan. They said that TLS is equally serviceable to Sigma, and that even Xeen lenses have good build quality (good build quality does not imply good glass in the case of Xeen). They said the reason to buy TLS if a person chose to do so is because of the unique quality of the image that TLS has when compared to lens offerings from other manufacturers. They said that Sigma has a more clean look that some might even call a sterile look whereas the TLS lenses have a less clean look. I hope this comment helps anyone who is considering TLS lenses. According to Duclos Lenses in L.A. TLS, Sigma and Xeen PL mount lenses all have good build quality, and have different image characteristics brought about through their glass. Because TLS does not make as many lenses as Sigma and Xeen, etc. TLS does not have the economy of scale to offer lower price points like Sigma does. I hope my comments are received as being helpful and respectful as they are intended. TLS, Xeen, and Sigma absolutely have different glass and different image quality, but according to Duclos in L.A. there are no build quality issues or repairability issues with Sigma PL lenses, or with Xeen PL lenses that they have come across. However every lens vendor is entitled to their professional opinions. I like the look of TLS lenses. They look great in my opinion. I just cannot justify their price (considering their equal serviceability to Xeen and Sigma according to Duclos) when compared to Sigma PL lenses. I enjoy CVP video content and I hope to watch more valuable CVP content in the future. 👍

Anybody hating on these lenses must be a Zeiss or Sigma die hard. I'm all for clinically clean looks when clinically clean looks are called for, but I love that companies are taking the time and effort to rehouse vintage glass, especially since over time good clean vintage glass will be harder and harder to find. This isn't a set I'd purchase, but it would absolutely be a set I'd consider renting for certain projects.

Interesting set of lenses. However, the sharpness, CA and breathing for almost 7K is not satisfactory. I would really like if you guys took a look at the IRIX cinema lenses. They are very affordable, and I would think a good option for independent filmmakers.

The image a lens produces is so subjective and that's why we do these tests, to show the character they have objectively. Do you think Cooke make bad lenses? Because they will have similar performance in the areas you have mentioned for these. Another thing you need to consider at their price point is its competition and mechanics. These are incredibly well put together lenses and if you're spending this kind of money on lenses, they are investments as much as tools. There are other lenses at their price point which aren't as easy to get serviced which is a huge factor for people at this price point. Ultimately everything has its place, pros and cons! The Irix stuff looks interesting at their price point, the biggest issue with that set at the moment is the lack of focal lengths. Jake
