TITANIC's Maiden Departure and NEAR COLLISION with SS New York

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The maiden voyage of RMS Titanic nearly ended before it even began when the ship narrowly averted a collision with the smaller ocean liner SS New York as she left Southampton. In this video, we talk about how the crew of Titanic, New York, and the tugboats stopped the collision from happening. After that, Titanic continues on her way and we will talk about the first two days of the voyage as the ship stopped in Cherbourg, France and Queenstown, Ireland before continuing across the Atlantic to her dreadful fate.
This video is dedicated to Father Francis Browne whose famous photographs document the first two days of Titanic's maiden voyage.

This event at Southampton is a very weird one to me. I know about it and I've heard about it many times, but I always keep forgetting about it, almost as if it never happened. It's not that the whole thing was too absurd or something, it just feels so disconnected to the actual tragedy that happened just 4 days later.

I have never heard of any "lost" footage filmed from the decks of Titanic during the time of the near collision with the SS New York and Oceanic. I have never heard any Titanic enthusiast or historian mention this until this video. There's no mention of any filmed and lost footage taken onboard or of Titanic except the famous film at Belfast in Feb 1912 during the late stages of fitting out on the Paul Lee Titanic resource, so I'm assuming someone has got their wrongs, but I could be right. Nothing I've seen mention of this film on Encyclopedia Titanica either.

Fun Fact: The American TV Cut of the 1979 film: *"S.O.S. TITANIC"* has a scene where Chief Officer Henry T. Wilde mentioned the near-collision in a letter to his sister. Plus, the original script to *"TITANIC",* the 1996 miniseries (envisioned to be 4 hours long) by Ross LaManna - the creator of *"Rush Hour"* - was to show the near-collision. Sadly, this and several historical characters (including Titanic's designer Thomas Andrews and the Goodwin Family in Third Class) were all omitted in the revised & condensed script by Joyce Eliason.

SS New York (former City of New York as launched in 1888), is one of my favorite ships of the era. She wasn't big in 1912, smaller than the Oceanic, but she was beautiful for her time and she will always be beautiful in my opinion. In 1912 she was old and obsolete, but still served her original purpose. Edit: her true beauty isn't apparent in this video, you have to see the colorized photos and paintings of what she looked like she was originally put into service with a long bowsprit and beautiful lines.

Sad to say, but it would seem that Capt Edward Smith and George Bower were somewhat accident prone. Before this near miss they were also in command when the RMS Olympic collided with HMS Hawke about 8 months earlier.😕 Ironically the ship repairs required on the Olympic meant that the Titanic build and launch was delayed too, meaning that as it traversed the Atlantic to New York on it's maiden voyage the Titanic was more likely to encounter icebergs on its journey in mid April than sailing across the Atlantic in March. ☹️

SS New York was already 24 years old at the time, and would ironically outlive the Titanic by another 11 years. She was originally built for the Inman Line in 1888, and had both a double bottom AND watertight compartments WHEN NEW. Also, many historians and engineers agree that her compartments were a superior design to the Titanic's, IN 1888! Someone should have taken notes...

A couple of pointers. On a ship, the order is to take in the mooring lines. Second point - while it could be considered a hawsepipe as it would have been used for the third anchor that was stowed on the forecastle, it was also their centerline chock, also known as the "bull nose."

The Olympic-class liners, with their tremendous size and strength, really were like the myths (and empire in the case of Britannic) their names were inspired by, and in Titanic's case, it almost cost her before she even entered the river.
