The cuckoo chick's begging behavior and the noise it makes are designed to mimic a whole nest full of the host bird's babies. This triggers the parents to really focus on feeding it a lot of food.

If only the birdhouse entrance was a bit smaller there never would have been a Cuckoo egg to begin with. Chances are it killed at least two other host chicks/eggs in the attempt and taking in all the food from host parents. You can see one of the killed eggs in the corner, got stuck and killed due to no heat.

Well, a minute into the video, the cuckoo is also threatening the host parent when it feeds its own chick rather than it! Bird language for "You'd better feed me and only me! You may be the parent here, but I'm the bigger bird. I'll bite you!". Very frustrating!

Y'all are so stupid. It's a bird and a baby at that, it has no idea what it is, it runs on instinct and there's nothing malicious about it. Cuckoos grow fast and they need a lot of food.

Does anyone else find it interesting how the mother feeds her real chick first before the cuckoo chick? Also, anyone else concerned that the cuckoo will smother the other chick to death? I wish the poster of this video told us what happened at the end… this is the first time i saw a cuckoo coexist with another chick.

Sometimes the parent will check the strength of the chicks pulling on the food. If the chick doesn't pull hard enough on the food then the parent thinks to give the food to a stronger chick.@@VVarat

There is a species cuckoos that produce a smell which put off cats so a symbiotic relationship can occur, but it's rare.

theres an egg right next to the cocoo must have pushed it there so that parent wont warm it

@@s.guttmann6625 Often times, Cuckoo parents will return and destroy the entire nest they parasitised, killing all the remaining chicks, should they find that their egg/chick has been removed by any means whatsoever (whether it be the parent birds' ejection or by humans) from the nest they parasitised - thus, no chicks at all would survive in that case. This is called the 'mafia hypothesis'. Cuckoos control some levels of insect species from getting out of control, since they tend to eat so much. That's why most nature experts say it's best to leave it alone if you happen to come across any type of parasitised bird nest. This is a very difficult thing to do since cuckoos like this one are so hateable.

I don't think it will be able to get out when the day comes

It's interesting to see that both the cuckoo and the chick survived. Probably the artificial box did the correct job preventing the fratricide of at least of the brood. I imagine how hard it had been for the cuckoo getting out of the box because of the grates😆

I said it in another post but: "I must advise against it since it's proably illegal, but if you have to do so anyway remember to wear fresh gloves. If you get your smell on the other eggs or chicks the parents may abandon them."

Very unusual a cuckoo leaves a host birds nestlings to live.Never heard of it before,might be worth sending to Springwatch at a later date.I hope the Great Tit does manage to raise her own nestling,but it quite likely to get squashed by the cuckoo

Yes, mixed brood (cuckoo with host nestlings) can be observed more often in (semi)cavity nesters such as great tit or redstart. Great tit fledged succesfully and had even above average weight. In this nest, female cuckoo laid her egg originally into redstart nest which was later usurped by the great tit (see the redstart egg next the cuckoo). Very unusual case.

When a cuckoo cannot get rid of eggs (cause of the shape of the nest) he usually bully other chicks stealing them food but he don't kill them.

Did anyone who left a previous comment even pay attention? You can see that the cukoo got the bug not the other chick the smaller bird was too small too swallow the food it was pretty damn apparent unless you're blind.

I disagree. I think the small baby kept clamping down on the mothers beak it didn't allow him to grab the insect. On more than one occasion the insect went all the way in his mouth

@@goshtic9565 Read their post again, because he's not arguing otherwise. He's responding to someone who implied that the bug was too big for the host chick to eat. He was pointing out that the mother fit the bug all the way into its mouth multiple times, but decided to feed it to the cuckoo anyways. As for why, it's likely because birds rely on it "catching" on a specific part of the inside of a chick's mouth to know it'll go down properly, and it simply wasn't happening. Could also be due to an inexperienced parent, or the incessant begging from the giant cuckoo chick.

He pushed me down 3 times while you are away but i climbed back up.

@@shycat5905 Nah, only the African Honeyguide ruthlessly and directly kills the competition. The least harmful parasite is the American Cowbird, which is smaller and better able to share. It only occasionally kills other chicks by pushing them out. The cuckoo is in between these two, and usually really doesn’t need to kill over food, but over space. In a box, however, there’s plenty of space, so all can potentially thrive, although it helps when the box is built in the round just big enough for the nest to be snug in, so he doesn’t have corners to push the eggs into. In those cases, he can try all day, they just fall right back into the nest. He might occasionally kill one from tossing her around too much, but that’s it.

Did that cuckoo attack the mother?, Did that little one survive? Is there a video till the end?

The little one probably survived because it was in pretty good condition a day before its fledging. We unfortunately don't have a video of fledging itself.

+SealMr2 Very interesting the host parent could recognize a parasite chick, very unusual in cuckoo host! What was the species of cuckoo host? We attempted to track this cuckoo using geolocator but the signal disappeared after few months after fledging, unfortunately.

I think that parents don't recognize cuckoo chick as a parasite (at least research suggests this) so observation of SealMr2 sounds exceptional to me in case the cuckoo starved to death.

I was wondering how the cuckoo lay the egg. besides the small hole, they also need to time their egg laying well so their chick is the first to hatch instead of the host. But nest box is totally cover up. they cant see the host eggs or the mother. it is a huge risk for the cuckoo mother to lay her eggs there.

Cuckoos do not build its nest but parasite other species. Its hatchling pushes the host eggs, hatchlings out of the nest so it can be the monopoly chick, in the other bird's nest, want to be fed to the point it is several times bigger than the host parent and still want to be fed.

I hope the cuckoo mother put her eggs on the eagle nest😁
