On June 8th, 2021 a pigeon entered a barn owl nest box that had 7 nestling that is streamed live in our KZread channel (Charter Group Birdcams ציפורים אונליין קבוצת צ'רטר). A this time the barn owl parents roost outside the nest box during the day and returned only at night to feed the young. The pigeon returned on June 9th this time with its mate and laid an egg next to the barn owl nestlings. Since pigeons lay two eggs and start to incubate only after the second egg she slept outside of the barn owl nest box and therefore did not meet the barn owl parents. On June 10th the pigeon decided to sleep inside the box during the night and the encounter with the barn owl parents followed. The male barn owl did not know what to make of the pigeon, whereas, the female, waisted no time and showed the pigeon who the queen of that nest box really is. Enjoy.
The camera was added and maintained by the Charter Group of Wildlife Ecology (The Shamir Research Institute and the Department of Geography and Environmental Science of the University of Haifa) and funded by a private donor.

it's not really protecting anything. it leaves the egg multiple times. which is normal for birds, if they're in a risky situation, because you can always lay another egg - unless you die. so it's better not to die, of course. self preservation. the pigeon is still in the box because pigeons cannot see in the dark. it took a long time for it to figure out how to get out because it can't see the owls and doesn't know when it's safe to make a run for it. so it hunkers down out of fear. that IS very sad. it's just nature but it still must suck for the pigeon. they're not really wildlife, that's why they're so bad at making nests

Fun morbid owl fact: Did you know that owls lay their eggs a few days apart rather than all at once like most birds? That's why why the chicks are all different sizes. They do this because if the parent hasn't come back with food (because they can't fly in the rain), then the biggest one can eat the smallest one. Then if they still haven't come back, then he can eat the next smallest one. Edit: They don’t eat their siblings on purpose but rather have shit short distance eyesight. On a normal day, the parent comes back with food and dangles it over the nest for them to eat, and all the chicks rush forward to get the food, with the biggest chick getting the most food and leaving the scraps for the others. Therefore, the biggest chick gets stronger, while the smaller chicks get weaker. (something like only 25% make it through the 1st year). Now they have amazing long-distance vision, but basically no short distance vision so they can’t really see what they’re eating, but they just feel that it’s fluffy (eg. A mouse). So when the day comes that the parents can’t return with food, the chicks still expect food, and the bigger ones feel that there’s something fluffy around him and eats their sibling (thinking it’s the food their parents brought them).
