Just a quick tutorial covering a few little tricks & techniques for kiting when the wind is particularly gusty.
The 2nd half of this video our camera screen got pretty salty & blurry (woohoo it was windy!) so decided to overlay this whole segment with session clips from waves around the world for your viewing pleasure.. :)
We're always happy to answer any questions, and If there's anything you'd like to see: tutorial, training etc comment below & we'll try and get to it.

Been teaching myself and finally got the right conditions on our lakes here in the central USA and got to get up and ride. Had to walk back to my starting point three times almost a mile. On my third run I was able to end up in my starting point on the shore a couple times but then the wind suddenly got gusty and I just had to go with it because edging upwind when that 14 meter was pulling like a truck just wasn't happening. But I got to experience riding today and doing transitions. Finally! Sure wish we had better locations though. I can only imagine kitesurfing on the spots you see in these videos on youtube. Looks like heaven compared to our lakes.

Keep up the content F+L....great seeing you guys back on KZread. If gusting on bigger kite range, I find changing bar settings to less power/faster steering helps. Beginners should avoid gusty conditions until they are comfortable holding an edge, which they will need to rely on during strong gusts.

As always love the kite content you put out. Would be great if you could do a unhooked series, starting withe the basics to pro 💙

With higher wind and gusts, I like using the last knot on the back line attachments, and also launch with some depower already pulled in on the bar since I can start underpowered and add power in as needed. I find the wind can be very different as I ride out from close in to shore to the outside.

freeride kites are recommendable for gusty conditions. Also, the stronger the wind, usually gusts will be more tough. Thus, ride in lighter winds if you have trouble dealing with them.

Thanks luke. What do you do if your bar doesn't have a stopper. Do you know any way of making 1? I have the new north bar. It has no stopper which is a bit of a design fault if you ask me

Enjoy your vids. Pls consider doing one on transitions. Many of us struggle with this simple skill ... we sink as the kite seems to fall outside the power zone on the downstroke into the new direction. No idea what is wrong. And I think of the transition as such a potential fun part of the sport with carved turns, etc. ... but have to master the basic turn perfectly first.

Practice them in light wind conditions in combination with kite loops. Makes all the difference. a good transtion without kiteloop simply needs a lot of wind.

Very helpful thanks. The point about not having the kite at 12 because it can race forward and drop out the sky in a gust. This happened to me yesterday and had to eject.

Another tip would be to use a tubeless kite which is far more reliable in very gusty condition (especially when the wind moves very light)

Came back from Kanaha 2 weeks ago..( could only kite on 2 days )…… On both days Wind it more of survival than fun…. Ranging from 10mph lulls to to 45 mph gusts and averaging around 30 ish … none stop! No Fun imo.. Is this place always like this ? Expected smoother winds in Maui…

Yeah wind that gusty sucks. I wouldn't kite in that. Maui has some good wind, might have just been a bad direction?

I kind of disagree with keeping the kite high to counteract gusts with weight. In proper strong wind your weight wont be enough of a counterweight, if you keep it low you can really dig in your edge and hold alot more power than just your bodyweight.

When its really gusty bodyweight isn't enough so I keep my kite low to keep my speed in control
