perhaps the best comeback in music history. being a teen at the time i didn't know much about her because her best days had been behind her, but then 1983 happened and she was bigger and better than she'd ever been. it didn't bother me that she was in her mid 40s at the time because she encapsulated the times so perfectly. she wasn't an older artist trying to catch up with the times, she was shaping the 80s and bending the decade to her will. what an amazing woman.

Released 29th May 1984, 'Private Dancer' was the 5th solo studio album released by Tina Turner. The title song was initially recorded by Dire Straits {UK group) and was written by their world famous songwriter/guitarist Mark Knopfler. The Tina Turner album gave her a whole new boost to her career, which had faded after the 'Nutbush City Limits' fame.

The song refers to dance halls from the 30's when men could go and buy a dance with a pretty girl... In the United States during the 1920s and 1930s, when taxi dancing was at its peak, patrons of taxi dance halls would typically buy dance tickets for ten cents each. When they presented a ticket to a taxi dancer, she would dance with them for the length of a single song. BTW - love your reactions!

This song comes from the album of the same name which re launched Tina into the stratosphere selling multi platinum all over the world. It was recorded in the UK with four different production teams even including one which were members of Brit synth band Heaven 17. In many ways it was a departure from what Tina had been known for up to this point but it absolutely brought her a huge new audience and cemented her as a superstar.

Thank you for giving Tina the attention she deserves! The song actually was the title track to her comeback album in 1984. Between leaving Ike in 1976 and her comeback she released two other albums that were not successful. Then in 1982 (I believe) she met her - from then on - manager who got her to record with Heaven 17 who produced Let’s Stay Together with her in 1983, a song originally by Al Green. Even though it was a success, her record company Capitol did not believe in her until David Bowie took the record executives to the Ritz, to see his favorite singer: Tina Turner. That’s when Capitol allowed Tina to record a new album which was produced with as much producers as there were songs on it in only two weeks: Private Dancer. Even though the songs were randomly picked from different sources, the album feels like auto biographical, referring to her time with Ike. Songs like What’s Love Got To Do With It and Private Dancer, but also I Might Have Been Queen, Show Some Respect, Better Be Good To Me and not to forget her beautiful rendition of the Beatles Help give that idea. When you realizes this, you hear the album in a different context which makes it even more interesting.

It wasn’t a “huge” hit not as big a “What’s Love Got To Do With It”. The single is also the name of the album, maybe you’re confusing the two. The single peaked at #7 on the Billboard charts and #3 on the RnB charts. It didn’t even crack the top 20 on the UK charts which is where Tina found a lot of her success. I personally loved this song. She did a phenomenal job on the vocal all things considered.

@@jobuck879 Exactly, hence my point. The UK Charts are important but the Billboard Hot 100 is the premier chart worldwide and making the top 20 is when you get into certified “hit” territory; ergo, “Private Dancer” hit #7 (in part boosted by her Grammy wins) so it is just that, a hit.

And often the dancers took the offer of more money, if they would come out back and do more. So he wasn't really wrong..... My great grandmother actually trained her youngest son to be a dime dancer. He didn't have the health to be a sailor or work on the harbor, and she could imagine what else he could do. But he ended up taking all the his nice manners, she had taught him, to a department store and sold other things instead.

This was one of my favorite videos of hers. This video was definitely a hit, when it came out, MTV played it all the time. Also, back in the 1920's-1950's were dance halls, where men would go and pay to have a dance with a woman, esp. popular during WW1 and WW2, a dime a dance, but it was not sex....just literally paying to be able to dance with a woman. Sad on both sides. However, I can see how someone could compare it to prostitution. But being a dance hall girl was hard work....on their feet all day, dancing for dimes, the owner taking a huge cut, holding strangers close to slow songs....Tina caught it all perfect. I am glad she got the song, I had never known about it being for Dire Straits....yeah, that totally would not have worked. And yes, try listening to "We don't need another hero"....you will get another great aspect of her voice and power.

This is about the girls that used to dance with soldiers during WWII. They would be paid 10 cents a dance. It was hard work and long hours. Soldiers would be on leave and wanted to dance with a girl at the dance clubs, their girlfriends being at home in the States or elsewhere. It was kind to the soldiers, not a sexual thing really. You’ll notice in the video the man putting a dime in her hand. Also, you’ll see military men in the video.

...nice reaction, Sir Derek, you seemed to note the MUSIC, moreso, than the artsy displays from the Video...BUT, one scene in the Video NEVER gets mentioned, which is a VERY dark telling of the 'story'... The shot of Tina's "Dancer," KILLING herself, in her 'final performance' (here, at 10:07; notice the broken glass, & sploshes of 'blood,' in around the shot).... ...It was to show that the 'Dancer' is trying to glamourize the despair she feels within that lifestyle; THAT'S why she started crying, and walked away from the Guy she was 'dancing' with...you were RIGHT in realizing she's had enough, but the VIDEO artfully tells the REAL truth, of the 'Dancer'.....

Hello Derreck, I love so much this song from the eponymous album ("Private Dancer" 1984). This album of Tina is so special cause it was her first album after her separation from Ike Turner. This is the album of freedom. The one which she decide of all. The one she settles her accounts with this man who behaved like a tyrant with her. The one which she lets out her anger against him. Her most personal album perhaps (just to see the titles of certains songs). But which is sold more than 25 million copies in the world. A lot of artists came to work with her on this album. Terry Britten produced "What's Love Got to Do with It". "Better Be Good to Me" was written by Holly Knight, Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn and has been product by Rupert Hine (he produced most of the other album songs). "Private Dancer" which was written by Dire Straits guitarist and vocalist Mark Knopfler, and which features a guitar solo by Jeff Beck was produced by John Carter. This song was originally scheduled to be part of Dire Straits' fourth album "Love over Gold". "Let's Stay Together" was produced by Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh of the British band "Heaven 17". "Help!" was recorded with The Crusaders.

This song is a tribute to the Taxi Dancers the 1920's and 30's. After the depression when money was scarce women would be hired to dance with guys in dance halls. The cost was frequently 10 cents a dance. As with a taxi the meter was on and the cost was proportional to the time you spent dancing with the woman.

This song has been written by Mark Knopfler (Dire straits). You really should listen to that band (and not just the most well known songs). The man who let his guitar sing for him!

It was a hit dude and she has performed it live many times. I love this one too 😍 You could try On Silent Wings (album version), It's only love (live 1985) or if you want something super raw, just before her come back, the show 'Nice' n' Rough'

This was her great commercial comeback, although his previous album was very good but it was not successful ( those strange things from the world of music), but "Private Dancer" was a very great album that gave her a new recognition to the 80's generation, and, yes, Mark Knopfler, the leader of Dire Straits wrotte this big song, but the album is all great...

this song was the titlle track from her comeback album of the same name. The song was written by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits but he gave it to Tina as it didn't fit on the album Dire Straits was making. He also plays the guitar son the track. It was a top ten hit back in 1984. The biggest single from the album was "What's Love Got to do With It". Reportedly Tina hated What's Love but loved the rest of the album.

Yes, the one Mark described as the world's second ugliest guitar solo! It does rather let the song down. I would love to hear Mark's from the Dire Strait's recording that never saw the light of day...
